A marvelous autobiography!
REVERSALS is the story of a woman who, though quite bright, had an impossible time learning to read and spell.She didn't find out till she was in her 20s that she had dyslexia.In my opinion, Eileen Simpsonwas--and is--one courageous and resilient lady.Because she grew up duringan era when dyslexia, and LD in general, was unheard of, she was the victimof repeated misunderstandings.She was repeatedly accused of being lazy,careless, unmotivated, etc.In fact, her 4th-grade year was the worstschool year she ever endured, due to a strict, authoritarian teacher and anequally strict aunt.That she never gave up, and was able to learn to readand spell in the end, is tribute to both her strength AND her intelligence. For finding the courage to disclose her dyslexia for the benefit of otherswhen it would have been so much easier to keep trying to hide it, I applaudher.To anyone who wants to learn about LD and its effect on those whohave it, I highly recommend her book! ... brain not wired right
I am a tutor for children with Dyslexia.This book is very accurate.I like what it says except for on page 2 it says,"Some of the wires in my brain are not connected right and my brain does not process words and sounds correctly."This sounds very negative. It should read something like, "The wires in my brain are connected differently. I need to use a different way of learning to read and spell than my regular classmates."

Not that important but the other thing I didn't care for was the illustrations with Delaney smiling.The smile just isn't done well. It makes the book look amateurist.

I read it to my daughter's class!
My daughter identified with every page, she's 7, and then I read it to my daughter's class.My daughter understood dyslexia better and was proud of what's she's already accomplished.Hopefully, the class got it and will stop teasing her!!!My daughter also loved that it was a true story about Delany.Good choice for a young person with dyslexia!

loved the book
I'm a special education teacher and have now shared this book with 3 different students and their parents.The responses that I have received from both students and parents have been VERY positive.The only perceived negative I have about the book is that the child has a very different lifestyle than the students I teach.This is not a suggestion that the book isn't excellent and that my students cannnot relate to her beyond that.It'd be great if a non-white student lesser means ALSO wrote a book titled, "I Have Learning Disabilities.What Does That Mean?"

At last, I understand!
This is the first book I've been able to find that explains what dyslexia is like from my child's point of view.The author takes you through an amusement park where each "ride" allows a nondyslexic person to be able to imagine one of the symptoms of dyslexia.It dispels the myth that dyslexia is just "words and letters that reverse themselves."As a parent of a dyslexic child and a teacher who works with dyslexic students I recommend this book to all of the parents of my students.I also highly recommend it for teachers of dyslexic students.I believe it gives fair treatment to the other methods used to help someone with dyslexia.It is clearly stated in the book that Ms. Temple is a Davis Facilitator so one would expect her book to focus on Davis ideas.She would not have elected to spend the time and money it takes to become licensed if she didn't believe the methods were the best from her perspective.

In response to an earlier review
TO the writer who had a bone to pick. This book compairs the two method of teaching dyslexics, the traditional as well as the Davis method. Traditional methods don't work for everyone. I know because I have been there. My so is dyslexic through and through! He fell through the cracks because of the traditional method of drilling phonics over and over and over! If it weren't for the Davis method his dyslexia would have driven him into the groung. Now he is a bright, cheery, well adjusted child because they taught him how to use his "gift" to it's fullest by giving him the tools he needs to over come the obsticles.

A BONE TO PICK
I have a bone to pick with this book.Although it presents itself as an overview of dyslexia, it is really an advertisement for the Davis Method.The first half of the book discusses "standard" treatments in a slightly negative way, then the second half of the book is a glowingexplanation of the Davis method.I have nothing against Ron Davis's methodbut it's wrong for the book to be advertised as a general book when it'sreally a book about the Davis method.

Provides excellent guidance to parents
In my job, I frequently talk to parents concerned about their children'sschool problems. Most feel confused and overwhelmed by an array of oftencontradictory information. Robin Temple's book is the first book I haveseen that really focuses on guiding parents through this maze. The bookexplains the various approaches and treatments available in direct andeasy-to-understand terms, and provides some guidelines for evaluation. Someone finally understands my life!
For my 50th birthday, I gave myself the gift of being evaluated by Dr. Levinson.I had read his book "Smart but feeling Dumb" and had it dog-eared with notes, highlighting, and stickies.

I felt, while I was reading it - that someone could finally put into words what my life was like.Plus the book was easy to read, not because it had few pages, or graphs & charts ... but because it was spaced properly.More space was given around each word and between the lines.

This was not something you noticed immediately - I had to read it in the book - but then when I compared it to other books - Dr, Levinson was right!Again and Again.

I have been under Dr. Levinson's care for 5 years.And my life is easier, not radically, just that days are good, they are easier, and I don't struggle they way I did before.

I recommend you visit his web site [...] (Note:the font on the web site is NOTHING like the books!Some designer gave it a font that does not work like the book. I'll bring that up to him at my Annual visit.

An absolute life-changer!!!!Please read it!!!!
I got this book when our son was learning how to read because we thought that he was showing signs of dyslexia.When I went through the first part of the book, I realized how many other things were all related to the same root problem.Dr. Levinson's book explained why our son couldn't tie his shoes yet, and is still learning at Age 7.It made it clear why he couldn't ride his bike without training wheels at 7 when the 4-year-old next door could fly down the street.We also understand why he struggles with writing even though the end result looks nearly perfect.We had almost written off the thought of dyslexia because our son became a fabulous reader almost overnight once he figured it out.He loves to read, but this book was still a life-changer.We used to spend hours working on homework that other children did in 15 minutes.After reading the book, we went to see Dr. Levinson. Literally, after one week on his treatment, our son was doing his work in half the time and without the tears that he used to have.Now about 4 months into his treatment, we are still improving measurably.We still have frustrating times, but they are far fewer in number and are less intense.Our son got straight As on his report card for the first time ever after about 7 weeks on the treatment.It has allowed him to share his intelligence that has always been there, but that he could not get out previously.
Dr. Levinson has absolutely changed our lives.If you or your child struggle with balance, hitting a ball, riding a bike, reading, writing, memory, double vision, learning disabilities, or a litany of other things that nobody else can explain, I would highly recommend that you read this book and follow it up with a visit to Dr. Levinson.
We waited a full year after reading the book before we made an appt.Had I known then the difference that it would make, I would have done anything necessary to make that appt. immediately!Get the book, read it, and see for yourself what a difference it makes!

The only book with a treatment plan that gets at the root of the dyslexic syndrome
Smart But Feeling Dumb is the most informative book ever written by a Medical Doctor who has gone against the grain of mainstream treatments, and came out of it helping tens of thousands. I am personaly greatful for Dr. Levinson for his perserverence in getting to the root cause of the dyslexic syndrome and its far reaching effects. I have felt - experientially - the positive results of having a reversal of deep rooted learning disabilites in an exceptable time frame. Problems I have had for decades are no longer problems. The only thing this Doctor and his book can not give back is lost time. If anyone or their children are having dyslexic like problems, it is recommended that this is the very first book you read. Hands down the very best book ever written on the subject.

This book was the first I read that made sense. It changed my daughters life. Under Dr. Levinson's direction, My daughter's reading went from 1st to 3rd grade (grade level) almost instantly. Her hand writing and spelling also improved. She is a different child and can't stop reading and writing.I know many other "experts" want to disagree but there is no other reason for her immediate turn around.She showed sighs of improvement within 1 week and continues to develop with her grade level after 1 1/2 years.I have recommended two other families to Dr. Levinson and they both have experienced similar improvements. This book brought tears to my eyes and joy to my heart.I did not find out I haddyslexia until my first year in college. I was always a straight A student so I don't think anyone thought I had a problem, but I knew something was wrong. I was always writing things backwards and a short term memory at times. I was hyperactive and I lashed when I got frustrated (then I would feel guilty) and I didn't understand why. I always felt unloved and stupid even though I had tons of friends and a scholarly academic life.I have been called smart and intelligentbut it was sometimes coupled with the words crazy, over emotional, overly sensitive, mean, unsociable etc.No one could understand why this beautiful intelligent successful girl (me) could not see herself that way. I had been toa counselor once I got older but most diagnosed me as depressed. I had no clue these issues I was dealing with have to do withdyslexia. At the age of 28 this is a breath of fresh air and a definite sign of hope. I wish I had this information years ago. This book communicates what I tried to explain to my parents, my teachers, the counselor, my friends, my boyfriends, ie. but they could never understand.
