5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I just checked this book out of the library and finished it. I have a son with dyslexia and this book explains better than any I have found the whole picture of dyslexia. It discusses the problems dyslexics face with writing, spelling, reading and letter reversals. It tells of the problems they have with self esteem, family issues they have with their parents and siblings, even covering peers. The book also talks the testing process, what tests are done on a child to determine if they are dyslexic and how testers come to that conclusion. The stories of all the children in the book are very interesting. What I liked best about the book is how it talks about the non-academic aspects of being dyslexic, the problems that they have with orientation, direction and organization that make dyslexia difficult in life, not just school. I plan to buy a copy of this easy to read book to loan to my son's teachers at the beginning of each school year to help them really understand. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A window into the home where dyslexia lives
I am a teacher and have had close contact with families who have had dyslexic children. This author does a great job of communicating the emotion, questions, struggles, and fears that a mother has. Her son also writes vignettes at the end of each chapter expressing his own point of view and struggles and fears. She weaves into the story enough clinical information to define dyslexia, explain its symtoms, and discuss ways to deal with it. But the main impact is the author opening her heart to the reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reading David
The book, Reading David, by Lissa Weinstein helped me deal with my own son's struggle with dyslexia. Lissa and David touch the emotions of both mother and child through the unique, overweleming journey of dyslexia. The reader experiences the triumphs and struggles of everyday living. This book taught me that my son is a very bright, unique individual who desires to fit in. I felt someone was feeling what I was feeling and that it was okay to be angry one day and joyful the next because living with dyslexia is such an up and down rollercoaster.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank-You for writing this book!
Reading David has been a very emotional experience for me.My son, the same age as David, was diagnosed with a Learning Disability.I have only been reading a few pages a day as I cry with every emotion expressed that hits home - and they all do. What Lissa Weinstein has been able to write about has been cathartic for me.Her advice and the feelings expressed by her and her son will help guide my family through this Labyrinth.Thank-You for writing this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A unique voice on dyslexia
This is a terrific book, a virtual roadmap for anyone interested in dyslexia, or learning disabilities in general.Weinstein is a clinical psychologist and university professor, with a depth of experience in dealing with childhood learning disorders that is challenged when she has to deal with her son David's dyslexia. As a mother, she understands and conveys the dynamics of dyslexia in a way that illuminates both the helplessness any parent may feel when faced with a child's reading difficulties, and as a psychologist, she offers real self-help, insight, advice and solutions (all with a minimum of jargon) for dealing with a multi-faceted problem that does not go away just by adding some tutoring or changing the curriculum. The passages describing her dawning awareness that her own son has a serious learning disability, and her own feelings of guilt, are especially poignant. The real reward in this book, however, is the voice of her son David - whose words, taken down verbatim by his professor mother, reveal with astonishing directness the hurt, bewilderment, and courage of a child who just doesn't begin reading along with his classmates and the strategies he employs both to try to learn and to hide his failures. The book is a must for anyone dealing with learning disabilities, in the classroom or the home. ... Product Description
There is now a greater need than ever before to assess, record and respond appropriately to the special needs of individuals. Specialist teachers, SENCOs and learning support managers - all have a statutory duty to see that individual needs are identified, from the early years to further and higher education. This book focuses on the purposes, principles and practicalities of assessing for dyslexia across successive age groups, exploring the changing assessment issues and specific assessment needs. It looks at the available types of assessments at each stage, explaining how to interpret results and how and when to involve other professionals. Throughout, special emphasis is placed upon the need to cooperate and communicate effectively with others - pupils/students, their parents, class teachers, administrators and fellow professionals - to ensure that appropriate intervention and follow-up support are forthcoming. Assessments are needed to diagnose, to plan intervention, to inform school/college policies, to support claims for funding, to justify special arrangements in examinations, and more. These very different purposes require specialist teachers and support managers to have a firm grasp of relevant legislation and professional guidelines, to select appropriate assessments and provide reports that will meet their intended purpose. Assessing for Dyslexia will enable you to achieve this! Down to earth, and with numerous examples, this book provides the practical guidance needed by specialist teachers and educational professionals in training, as well as by SENCOs and learning support staff working in schools and colleges. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A practical and down to earth survival guide for those with a 'dyslexic' child.
This is a small paperback book [15cm x 21cm] of about 95 pages. With my son (now 10) all this book really rung true, and I'm amazed how little our local primary school seem to know my son compared to the description given here on how a dyslexic son behaves (particularly the tantrums and whinging when you try and get him to read - it's because he finds it really hard work). Dyslexia simply means 'difficulty with words' so as a label it is little more than stating the obvious that your child isn't progressing with reading as easily as most. When my son seemed to doing badly with reading 3 years ago at primary school, I mentioned it to his teacher and she said - oh he's clearly not dyslexic he's doing fine at reading. Two years on and he had a reading age of 7 when approaching 10, and the school then said he had real problem with reading and spelling - noticed largely because his new form teacher also had a dyslexic son. If I had read this book 3 years ago I would have fought far harder to get him specialist help - it's now coming too little too late really with secondary school only 9 months away. I don't know if it's just maturity or the fact that people now recognize he has a problem (as does he) and help rather than complain and call him lazy, but he is now really trying hard at reading & spellings (well most of the time).

This book has lots of very useful information for those with a dyslexic child around 7 to 10 (the earlier you read this book the better). Some ideas my son had already worked out for himself beforehand like laying out his clothes and book bag ready for school the night before (organisation skills). He also still gets words wrong (like calling a calculator a count-a-later). Although I learnt to read very quickly as a child my spelling is awful and I still don't know the days in the months of the year - this book has a great way of working it out using your knuckles. My son still has absolutely no concept of time - "is it school today ?", "Two hours - how longs that ?" etc... However to speak to him he sounds at least as `bright' as his sister (12) who took to reading very quickly and now excels at school. This book has many good ideas on how to help your child and gives you the feeling that you aren't alone with these problems (problems that we never got at all with our first child). The book also mentions numbers and maths. The author has a dyslexic son and is an active children's teacher and lecturer in the field. I've got many `dyslexia books' but this one was great as it was so easy and quick to read over a few days - highly recommended. Note: I paid about $12 for this book new.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dyslexia-unravelling the mysteries step by step
Setting out the fundamental difficulties of a dyslexic, Ostler, who speaks from experience, provides clues about how to overcome the difficulties experienced by your dyslexic child in a classroom/school/learning situation. You begin to realise that there is light at the end of the tunnel. However, although these difficulties are typical for a dyslexic and there are tips to work out school related problems, we need to remember it does still mean that a dyslexic child has to work much harder than a non-dyslexic child but this seems to be to their benefit in the long run. Also the parental support is of paramount importance and with parental support most dyslexics are eager to succeed and can do so. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Dyslexia isn't mysterious anymore- & this isn't good science
Dr. Levinson does many readers, especially parents of children who struggle to read (have dyslexia) a disservice with his theories. Dyslexia is a reading disorder, not a mystery and people who waste time and money pursuing unlikely solutions to reading problems have been led astray.Specialized instrution is the answer- not magic ear treatments! This kind of quackery is unethical!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good information
This is an excellent book. Please do not listen to the individual that said this book was unscientific. If you would like evidence concerning cerebellar deficits in dyslexia they are easy to obtain. This book does have a scientific basis. Please do not assume that just because the Orton society does not sanction this book that it is "way outside of scientific thought". At one time scientists thought leeching was a good thing. Go figure. Science is a process, there are always new developments. If you would like to research Dr Levinson's theory for yourself you can go to infotrieve.com put dyslexia and cerebellar in the search bar and you can buy scientific articles on this topic to your hearts content. This database has articles that are peer reviewed such as Journal of the American Optometric Association, Annals of Dyslexia, Experimental Brain Research etc.

That said, this is what I like about this book:
1. Dr Levinson does not claim that cerebellar deficits are the ONLY cause of dyslexia. He also cites some research by Irlen on visual processing deficits and says the cause of dyslexia may be different for individuals.
2. He says that this treatment does not work for everyone. The degree that it will help people also varies from individual to individual.
3. He does not claim to cure anyone and is upfront about the fact that problems will still exist.
4. He listens to his patients. He does not take the "I am doctor. I am expert", stance. He speaks about defining dyslexia based on the accounts of individuals that struggle with it.
5. He states that dyslexia should not simply be based on a reading discrepancy. Many individuals have a hard time reading but muddle along, without falling too far behind. But the process is still slow and painful.

I could go on but space is limited. This book is a good read. It may help the dyslexic person in your life or it may not. But it will provide you with information.

I strongly urge people to read all of Dr. Levinson's books and cannot praise his diagnostic and treatment procedures/methods(etc.) highly enough. As I have been a very successful patient of his since 9/84 to present. His books have wonderful self-help, self-teach, self-healing as well as self-acceptance themes ever-present, and have transformed the lives of many people over many years, myself especially. The books also repeatedly emphasize that "You aren't alone" and you're smart and that there is hope, healing and help available!!The photographs of actual patients in "A Scientific Watergate" put "real faces" and emotion on the words...again showing you that you aren't all alone...The books also repeatedly prove that a multitude of what can appear to be unrelated single symptoms have one common cause and one safe treatment that can (at least in my case) almost put the "disease" into a "near-remission" state...giving you back a peaceful, healthy, stable equiliburium...restoring your mind-body balance and sense of wellbeing physically, mentally, spiritually...additionally Dr. Levinson and I both endorse a series of non-medical therapies within a Scientific Watergate, which include tinted lenses. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars reviewed by Ellen Tanner Marsh, a New York Times best-selling author
Dyslexia: My Life
One Man's Story of his Life with a Learning Disability
An Autobiography
By Girard J. Sagmiller
As reviewed by Ellen Tanner Marsh, a New York Times best-selling author
What does it mean to grow up with a disability that no one seems to understand? For
author Girard Sagmiller, it meant grappling with shame and fear and his father's stony
disapproval. Girard Sagmiller has dyslexia, a neurological learning disability where
individuals experience problems recognizing words (the letters are often transposed) so
that reading is difficult, if not impossible. More often than not, dyslexics are erroneously
considered slow or stupid.
With honesty and grace, Sagmiller tells the story of his own battle with dyslexia and the
many challenges he had to overcome. Growing up in the 1960s, he faced uncaring
teachers and worried, angry parents who didn't know any better in dealing with an
affliction that we now know affects one in five children. But Sagmiller never gave up,
persevering against considerable odds to attend college, get a job and find his niche.
This extraordinary memoir tells his courageous story and also provides helpful tips for
managing dyslexia and ultimately succeeding in life. Overcoming a disability doesn't
mean curing it, but as Sagmiller writes, "other strengths will grow."
This is an important book for anyone struggling with dyslexia, for teachers of dyslexic
students and for families with a dyslexic loved one. The message here is clear: even
dyslexics can flourish in school and in everyday life and succeed in careers of choice.
Girard Sagmiller not only overcame his disability, he triumphed. And here, in this wise
and inspiring book, he shows an insightful path for others to triumph as well.

Excellent Book, it was an easy read and filled with handy tips! I would love to buy a load of these books to hand out to all the teachers involved with children suffering from Asperger's and Autism.
