Extractions: Lesson Plans Field Trips The Maine Geological Survey is a valuable resource for earth science teachers looking for information on Maine's geology and ecology. A broad assortment of maps and publications are available, including topographic map coverage for the entire state. We also have information on sources of additional materials published by the federal government. These resources can be incorporated into school curricula to provide both students and teachers with a better understanding of earth science topics and their importance to Maine's citizens. A series of free educational leaflets are available, and visitors to our office can use our library and view an exhibit of Maine minerals. The Survey's staff can answer questions about many earth science topics, and will help identify unusual rock and mineral specimens. The Maine Geological Survey received a grant from the National Science Foundation's Teacher Enhancement Program for a three-year project titled CREST ( C urriculum R esources for E arth S cience T eachers in Maine). During 1991-1994, CREST provided training and developed a variety of resources for Maine's high school and middle school teachers. This project had three components: (1) participation of teacher interns in research activities with professional earth scientists; (2) development of instructional materials for classroom and field activities; and (3) facilitating communication and sharing of resources among teachers. During each year of the project, a teacher was based at the Maine Geological Survey to help carry out these tasks.

In this lesson, students will explore life's requirements and how the Earth meets these requirements. Students will also research the characteristics of another planet in our solar system, decide whether they think this planet could support life, and create a project on a fictional colonization of this planet or a visit of humans to this planet. 1b. Earth's Location and its Effects Origins of the Solar System 1 class period For centuries, people have sought to understand where the Earth, the Sun, and the planets came from. As human technology and knowledge of the universe have improved, the theories of the origin of the solar system have changed. Currently, scientists generally believe that the solar system was formed from a ball of interstellar gas and dust 4.5 billion years ago. In this lesson, students will identify some of the components of the solar system and explore how the solar system was formed. 1e. Fly Me to the Moon
