Extractions: SME QUESTIONNAIRE Global Compact Advisory Council Meeting THE SECRETARY-GENERAL ARTICLE FOR WORLDLINK MAGAZINE (PUBLISHED BY THE WORLD ECONOMIC FORUM FOR DAVOS 2003) More than 50 years ago, a positive vision of world peace and prosperity prevailed among the postwar architects of the global governance system. The United Nations, and the Bretton Woods institutions, were created in the belief that lasting international peace and economic progress could be built only on solid foundations of international cooperation. Trade and investment were recognized as crucial factors in promoting political and social freedoms and raising standards of living. But the postwar economic order that emerged did not just endorse the "magic of the marketplace"; it was also based on a broad consensus that social safety nets and balanced development were every bit as important for stability within and among nations. The private sector is the primary engine and beneficiary of globalization. Its investment decisions can be the difference between growth and decline. And its production methods can make the difference between progress and pollution. Such power cannot be separated from responsibility. The choice is simple: corporations can do more to help reconcile markets with the wider needs of society they can resolve to be better global corporate citizens or they can be perceived as part of the problem, with all that that entails.

Extractions: BY Michael Tubridy English is not only the common language of business and commerce, but now, according to some observers, the common language of the Internet as well. But in a medium famous for having few if any restraints on its sense of innovation, how true is this assertion? The question holds more than academic interest to the U.S. shopping center community. Many U.S. retailers have expanded abroad over the last decade, and now many American developers are looking internationally either to start projects by themselves or to form partnerships with companies in the host countries. Retail sales and other economic data in these other countries represent basic information that allow American-based companies to gauge the feasibility and potential of new areas of operations. If you want this information, how easy do foreign countries make it for you to obtain it? To test how much English functions as a common frame of reference, ICSC decided to examine the Web sites of European governmental institutions to determine how many contain retail sales data. We then asked two questions: first, is there a Web site from a national source with retail sales information available in English? Second, is the English-language version of these data different from that given in the native language? As an ancillary goal, we hoped to discover how readily these nations disseminated business information. The following results, to our knowledge, represent the state of affairs that exists today.

Sign-Up America's dynamic economy may be wheezing a bit, but it is still the star performer that even the most advanced countries seek to emulate. In at least one key respect, however, America's performance stirs no envy among its rivals. As a recent study by economists Timothy M. Smeeding, Lee Rainwater, and Gary Burtless makes clear, U.S. poverty is far higher than the average in other industrial nations.

Extractions: Economics is usually defined as the study of the ways in which a society uses scarce resources in the production of goods and services to satisfy unlimited human wants. Many of the problems facing society will be better understood by applying the tools of economic analysis. Economists deal with recession and unemployment, inflation, poverty, environmental questions, governmental spending and taxation, the banking system and the money supply, labor unions, government regulation of business, foreign trade and balance of payments problems. Economists also study the economic systems of other nations, both the industrialized countries and the underdeveloped countries of the World. The Department of Economics at the University of Michigan celebrated its centennial in April of 1980. Through its long and distinguished history it has counted among its faculty and alumni many eminent scholars and public servants. The department is generally ranked among the top fifteen in the country. It offers an undergraduate concentration program which may be used as partial fulfillment for the College's requirement for the Bachelor of Arts or Sciences degree.

They conduct research, collect and analyze data, monitor economic trends, and develop forecasts. They research issues such as energy costs, inflation, interest rates, imports, or employment levels. Most economists are concerned with practical applications of economic policy. They use their understanding of economic relationships to advise businesses and other organizations, including insurance companies, banks, securities firms, industry and trade associations, labor unions, and government agencies. Economists use mathematical models to help predict answers to questions such as the nature and length of business cycles, the effects of a specific rate of inflation on the economy, or the effects of tax legislation on unemployment levels.
Extractions: When you're talking about the future of the Internet - particularly in this environment of economic uncertainty - making predictions can put you on really thin ice. The celebrated and oft-quoted economist, John Kenneth Galbraith, once quipped, "The only purpose of economic forecasting is to make astrology look respectable."
Extractions: The current economic and financial pressures on many organisations, particularly in hi-tech sectors, provide a major challenge for human resource departments. Increased competition and shrinking demand have resulted in a tightening of budgetary belts. In addition, many employees have seen the value of their share options dwindle, while the threat of redundancy has either become reality or remains in prospect.
