But some folks think we can prevent it (or at least limit it) through widespread nonviolent resistance, including applying economic pressure on Bush. This proposal is designed to stimulate our thinking. I invite your thoughtful consideration and further development. FIRST DRAFT TO STIMULATE DISCUSSION Thursday January 16, 2003 Should We Boycott for Peace? The Bush Administration says we're at war against terrorism and Iraq. OK. Let's take them at their word and start rationing and conserving for "the war effort." Let's boycott as much as we possibly can until Bush stops his war on Iraq. IMMEDIATELY: Stop buying anything especially from big corporations (to the maximum extent possible). Boycott all big retailers, big manufacturers, big corporations of whatever kind, unless absolutely necessary. We may buy basic necessities only from locally owned stores only if they were made by local, small-scale producers. If we need a product (e.g., a light bulb) that is not made by a small local producer, we could either: (A) simply do without it; (B) defer purchasing it as long as possible (e.g., by moving a good bulb from a room or lamp we rarely use; or (C) borrow some from a friend or neighbor who might have extra. Publicize the boycott by telling your friends, organizations, local retailers, manufacturers, politicians, newspapers, and others. Urge others to participate!
