During the period between 1989 and 1997, political instability and economic collapse caused Bulgaria to lag behind other Central European nations in terms of economic growth and reform but today the business environment in Sofia and in Bulgaria as a whole is improving - GDP growth was 5% in 2000. Nevertheless, inflation and unemployment rates are still high - 10.1% inflation and 18% unemployment in 2000. The average monthly salary is Lv170 (£55). The Bulgarian government is keen to attract foreign investors and has passed new laws to protect and assist foreign businesses. Many neighbouring European countries, as well as the USA, are now investing here, attracted primarily by a highly qualified and relatively cheap labour force. Bulgaria is working hard to align its laws with European Union Standards, in the hope of gaining EU membership. The

Extractions: UK economy This handout is intended to outline the major sources available in Oxford Brookes University Libraries which provide regularly updated commentary on, and analysis of the economies of individual countries. The currency of the publications ranges from textbooks which are regularly revised, to monthly bulletins and daily newspapers. It should be emphasised that very many other books and journals provide current information, but if they are not updated regularly, they are not included here. Although many of the sources mentioned include statistics, this handout is not intended to be a guide to them. Other handouts are available on sources of foreign and UK statistics. As might be expected, most detailed information is available on the UK, followed by European and OECD countries. This handout is organised to deal first with the sources which cover every country in the world, and to end with those which cover one country only, of which the majority cover the UK. Please remember when looking at the UK section that sources in preceding sections contain commentary on the UK economy. GENERAL SOURCES ECONOMIST INTELLIGENCE UNIT (in Business Source Premier on the web) The excellent Country Profiles and Country Reports on many countries published by the Economist Intelligence Unit are available on Business Source Premier, the journals database on EBSCOhost. These are recognised as the most authoritative reports on the market. The former are major, lengthy reports produced on many countries annually. The latter are briefer, but still quite extensive, monthy updates. Click on the link above to connect to the instructions on EBSCOhost. Please ensure that you follow the instructions in the section on finding country information.

Extractions: Hundreds of statistics about the economy are generated every month. Each gives some information about the condition of the economy. None of these statistics alone is a reliable indicator of overall economic health. Many economic statistics, though certainly not all, can be assigned to one or another of three distinct groups depending on the timing of their movements relative to changes in the national economy. Some tend to turn upward on a fairly regular basis in advance of the national economy and typically turn downward before the national economy begins to weaken. These are known as leading indicators, and they signal the advent of recessions and recoveries several months in advance. Others perform much in step with the economy as a whole and so are known as coincident indicators. Finally, those whose turning points trail behind the national business cycle are known as lagging indicators. Arline Alchian Hoel, Kenneth W. Clarkson, and Roger LeRoy Miller, Economics Sourcebook of Government Statistics (Lexington, MA: Lexington Books, 1983) 61.
