Together with his student Bertil Ohlin, Heckscher developed the most influential model of international trade today: the Heckscher-Ohlin model where international trade is driven by differences in relative factor endowments. Ohlin was awarded a Nobel Prize in 1977 for this contribution. Today, faculty in the Department of Economics are mainly involved in three activities: teaching in the undergraduate program, teaching in the graduate program, and conducting academic research. Undergraduate Program Every year a class of around 300 students enter the SSE undergraduate program. Admission to the undergraduate program is highly competitive and with around 3500 applicants, the SSE is the most selective institution of higher education in Sweden. In the first two years of undergraduate study, economics faculty teach required courses in microeconomics, macroeconomics, international economics and Swedish economic policy. In the final two years of undergraduate study, students choose from five majors offered by the SSE. Economics faculty teach courses in the "International Economics and Business" major. Recent courses taught by the economics faculty in this major include the economics of organization, health economics, mathematics for economists, international trade and industrial organization. In the academic year 2000-2001, three of the five persons nominated by students for the "SSE Teacher of the Year" award were professors in the Department of Economics.

Extractions: BASF employees teach local students about economics through JA GEISMAR, La., May 30, 2002 - Three BASF Geismar employees recently had seventh grade students at Galvez Middle bursting with new ways to market popcorn, just one activity through a Junior Achievement (JA) program that taught the students about economics. Scott Caylor and Rob Osterhold recently finished teaching an eight-week Junior Achievement course to students in two of "Coach" Rene Bourgeois' classes at Galvez Middle School. Jeffrey Jones taught in one of Charmon Lemaire's classes at the school. "Both the students and I learned a lot and had a lot of fun," said Caylor of his first experience as a JA volunteer teacher. "I definitely plan on teaching another class during the next school year." "I really enjoyed teaching the kids. I worked with Junior Achievement years ago, so I knew that the program would be good," said Osterhold. Founded in 1919, Junior Achievement is the oldest, largest and fastest-growing business and economic education not-for-profit organization in the world. The JA program the BASF employees used was Enterprise in Action®, which describes the principal characteristics of the U.S. economic system and the role of business within the system.

Not as glamorous as history or as concrete as geography, it tends to get a passing treatment as it incidentally pops up in the curriculum. Perhaps it is because its concepts tend to be more sophisticated and hard to master. Or maybe it's because it seems as much a kin to Math as it does the humanities. Whatever the reason, economics does not get its due in the classroom.
