    Extractions: Lets explore a bit. Suppose the Jewish date is accurate, but that the scholars have erred by 200 year, then Hatshepsut would probably be the Pharoah (Charles Pellegrino seems to think so, but place her around 1600) according to the standard cronology. This redating by 200 year places the Hykos as Pharoahs at the time of Joseph, out of power during slavery, and Hatshepsut at the time of the Exodus. The same result occurs if you assume the Jewish date to be wrong and date the exodus to 1500 instead, using the traditional Egyptian chronology. In each case, Akenatan is after the Exodus. Of course, the Israelites were monotheistic from the time of Avraham, so the date of Akenatan is really not all that relevent. If, however, the scholars are correct, and all of the rulers of Egypt ruled when they said, but the Jewish date is correct for the Exodus, then the Exodus occured during the reign of Horemheb, who reigned 1321-1293 BCE (according to Funk and Wagnall). He was the successor to King Tut, who followed Akenaton, the sun worshiper. The question arises when the Philistines, or Sea People invaded and were repelled, settling in Canaan, something that happened just prior to or doing the Exodus or at the latest, just prior to the entrance into Canaan. Most place this at 1212ish, was after it should have occured. Charles Pellegrino, on the other hand, says this took place in 1600ish, when Thera erupted, same time he dates the Ipwar papyrus. We will take a closer look at the connection between the Ipwar papyrus and the Sea People.

This was the directive of the Primeval Father [water, according to Egyptian beliefs] who came one day unexpectedly (Exodus 14:22,27) and the Israelites went into the sea on dry ground, waters forming a wall for them on their right and their left. ....at daybreak the sea returned to its normal state, and the Egyptians fled at its approach. But the L-RD hurled the Egyptians into the sea.

Probably because of the jackal's tendency to prowl around tombs, he became associated with the dead, and by the Old Kingdom, Anubis was worshipped as the inventor of embalming, who had embalmed the dead Osiris, thus helping preserve him in order to live again.     Extractions: “Archaeology of Ancient Egypt” introduced students to trends in Ancient Egypt from pre-dynastic times to the end of the Old Kingdom. Although no formal prerequisites are necessary many respondents felt that a background in history or art history was very helpful, as were very good memorization skills. Students praised Professor Brovarski for his jokes, but found lectures difficult to follow because of the large number of anecdotes and tangents. Because of this, class members were not able to tell what the main points were. Some were also unhappy with the format of lectures which was mainly looking at slides while Professor Brovarski talked. Although he was a tough grader, reviewers thought that he was generally very receptive to their needs. Two books were required for this course; one of which (The Complete Pyramids) students found very useful and interesting. The other was less interesting, but still occasionally useful for the class. The course was assessed on one paper, one midterm and one final exam. Student felt that both a final paper and final exam were unnecessary. Additionally students found the exams unfair as they were tested on ten slides, though they had to know about all of the slides that were shown. Respondents spent around 3 to 5 hours working outside of class, which met their original expectations. The recommendation for this course is to take it if you’re interested in the subject, but otherwise it’s just a lot of memorization of details in the slides. If you do take the course, make sure you’re notes are really good.
