Extractions: Learn More SAIC has helped the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) with systems that put agency information on-line in customized maps. The EPA's EnviroMapper won several industry and federal awards for excellence during 1999. Both EnviroMapper and the National Atlas project were awarded the 1999 Government Technology Leadership Award presented by Government Executive magazine. EnviroMapper makes a wealth of environmental information about any community in the U.S. easily viewed and mapped by anyone with a Web browser. EnviroMapper lets you "zoom in" on your local area, or enter a state, county, city, ZIP code, or watershed. You can view and query information on drinking water, toxic and air releases, hazardous waste, Superfund sites, water discharge permits, and other data. Then, you can embed the dynamically generated maps in your own web pages. This is the first time within the federal community that users can include federal information "live" on their own web pages. A "wizard" is also provided to make it easy to customize the map display. The capabilities of EnviroMapper, based on the latest Internet-based Geographic Information System (GIS) technology, have been expanded to deploy a GIS application using EPS geospatial data for the U.S. This application allows you to view the data from the national level to the community level. The geospatial data feature has helped earn the EPA Office of Environmental Information an unparalleled reputation as a leader within EPA and among GIS and geospatial information providers.

This article describes three important environmental health issues of current interest to the teaching or research programs in the Division of Environmental and Occupational Health in the University of Minnesota School of Public Health. Airborne Particulate Matter In one of the most momentous environmental decisions of the decade, last year the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed new National Ambient Air Quality Standards for particulate matter (PM). PM is a generic term; it applies to a broad class of chemically and physically diverse particles varying from 0.001 µm to 100 µm that exist as discrete particles, both liquid droplets and solids, suspended in air. Current EPA standards regulate the mass of PM per unit volume in air; the new standards extend this paradigm to smaller particles than have been regulated before. The new standards aim to control so-called fine particles, i.e., those 2.5 µm or less in aerodynamic diameter (PM To support the new standard, the EPA cites a number of time-series epidemiological studies that have shown weak, but statistically significant, associations between urban particle concentration and daily mortality counts.

This effect on heart rate variability provides the missing link between fine particulate matter exposure and numerous elderly hospital admissions and premature deaths each year.
