Extractions: Philosophy: Effectuationism Welcome to the philosophy system "Effectuationism", which is a formidably coherent, true-to-life, democracy, diversity and nature friendly philosophy. Where to start in making good sense of the world? Where, or with what, or with whom, or when, etc., etc., to start in filling in the jig-saw puzzle of the nature of 'Nature'? Or, where or what or whom or when, etc., etc., starts the form(ul)ation, or the effectuation of the nature of 'Nature'? I find that at some point one realises that one is dealing with, shall we say, (one's) perceptions or knowledge or awareness; that at issue are perceptions or knowledge or awareness. This perception may arise through observing that one is talking about the details of the world which one, ere, observes, or perceives, or effects including oneself. Whatever the means, it seems that one eventually comes to an awareness - that awareness effects - of relationship as being central to (one's) perception, or awareness (of 'the world'). So, one may formulate one's first principle as "Value, or perception or awareness is, or effects as, a relationship of forces or phenomena".

Extractions: FAS Courses of Instruction Philosophy Professor Richard Heck, Head Tutor Philosophy seeks to illuminate fundamental aspects of the world, of our relation to and knowledge of the world, and of our own nature as rational, purposive, and social beings. There is a wide variety of approaches to this end: they differ not just in the accounts they offer but in the questions they take to be important and in the methods they use to answer these questions. A philosophical training is in part intended to provide a grasp of what it is to have an approach: what is involved in developing and defending positions on questions of a general and fundamental nature. Philosophy divides into a number of special areas, principally philosophy of logic and philosophical semantics, epistemology and philosophy of science, metaphysics, moral and political philosophy, and aesthetics. But an appreciation of philosophy cannot be parochial; none of these areas can be pursued in complete isolation from the others. For this reason concentrators must satisfy a distribution requirement so as to become familiar with the central issues of several subdisciplines and with contemporary treatments of these issues. Philosophy is not a unified body of doctrine, but rather a family of traditions of thought whose development is intertwined and from each of which we still learn. Thus the study of classical works of older traditions is of great importance, and so concentrators must fulfill a requirement in the history of philosophy.

Extractions: Traditional Philosophy at Colorado State University T he Department of Philosophy at Colorado State University is guided by the principle that a Master of Arts in Philosophy requires training in traditional theoretical areas of philosophy. Consequently, all graduate students in their first year are required to take a seminar devoted to the in-depth study of a major text in the history of philosophy (PL500) and a seminar devoted to contemporary meta-ethics (PL547). Also, incoming students who do not have sufficient preparation in logic, epistemology, metaphysics, ethics or the history of philosophy will be required to take courses in these areas. Students will be notified when they are accepted what remedial courses they need to take. I n addition to PL500 and PL547, we offer the following seminars in traditional areas: PL525: Seminar in Epistemology, PL527: Seminar in Philosophy of Science, PL555: Philosophical Models of Nature, and PL 666: Science and Ethics. We have also offer special topics seminars, and topics have included Philosophy of Technology, Philosophy of Logic, Philosophy of Religion, Plato, Hume, Kant and Wittgenstein. Also, students can design independent studies in their areas of interest. A bout half of our students work in traditional areas of philosophy and these students typically plan to go on to PhD programs. Our students have successfully pursued doctorates at Brown University, Florida State University, Pennsylvania State University, Purdue University, Stanford University, Syracuse University, University of Cincinnati, University of Colorado at Boulder, University of Florida, University of Illinois, University of Rochester, University of Texas at Austin, University of Oregon, and Vanderbilt University, among others.
