Additional samples are periodically collected during various state-conducted research surveys and by fisheries observers who serve aboard domestic and foreign fishing vessels. Scales and otoliths are the anatomical structures most frequently collected from finfish. Scales are preferred because they are easier to collect and process, providing, of course, that clearly defined growth patterns are consistently formed. Young-of-year specimens and samples of certain species with fragile or difficult to remove age structures, e.g., Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus) and Atlantic mackerel (Scomber scombrus), are frozen whole for later dissection and processing at the laboratory. Other structures, such as fin rays or vertebrae, may also be collected and used for special studies, such as age validation. While scales are the easiest structure to collect, they must be taken from an area on the fish known to exhibit complete and clear growth patterns. Extractions: NYU NIEHS Center Molecular Biology Facility Core Research in the area of environmental health requires multidisciplinary approaches, utilization of new, accurate and highly sensitive molecular techniques and the use of state-of-the-art instruments that allow researchers to obtain, store and quantitate experimental data. Since state-of-the-art instruments utilizing new technologies are in many cases, not affordable by individual investigators, the Molecular Biology Facility Core provides essential molecular biology equipment on a shared basis to Center researchers. The facility also provides molecular biology expertise and training in practical methods to Center investigators and their staff. Konstantin Salnikow, Ph.D., Co-Director, has over 17 years of experience in molecular and cellular biology. He is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the equipment, including technical support, interactions with companies (Molecular Dynamics, Perkin Elmer, Millipore, and Emerson x-ray Solutions) for contractual negotiations, as well as maintenance and service of all instruments. Dr. Salnikow also provides consultations to all NIEHS Center investigators/postdocs and students related to molecular biology methods. Moon-shong Tang, Ph.D., Co-Director is experienced molecular biologist with research interest in DNA damage and repair, and is a pioneer in developing techniques for detecting chemical carcinogen-induced DNA adducts at the gene and DNA sequence level. Dr. Tang will advise and assist NIEHS Center members in using molecular techniques, including the new Affymetrix GeneChip technology, for detecting DNA damage, mutations, and changes in gene expression induced by environmental agents. Once the new GeneChip techniques are established Dr. Tang will consult with every Center member regarding the utilization of this facility for their environmental toxicology and molecular carcinogenesis research.

Solomon, Ph.D. , Director The Analytical Chemistry Facility includes the mass spectrometry laboratory and the newly created environmental metals analysis laboratory designed to meet the needs of Center investigators to measure the concentration of metals in a variety of biological and environmental matrices. This facility provides mass spectrometry and atomic absorption, and also provides critical consultative services in chemistry to Center investigators by providing expertise in physical chemistry, separations science, spectral interpretation and chemical synthesis. 2. Biostatistics Karen Koenig, Ph.D. , Director The Biostatistics Facility provides biostatistical support of research within the Center.
