Goals and Objectives for the Project Abstract for Semester One In order to provide a new kind of opportunity for students to succeed in the ESL writing class, the instructor will use some of the capabilities of the internet-based pedagogical template and program called Web CT. Students will be required to use computers to access this program for group chats, message boards, email exchange, and to the instructor's handouts and special materials. Hopefully, the use of this medium will be a catalyst for increased student motivation in the planning and revision of their writing. Abstract for Semester Two The previous plan will be continued and expanded. Students will post some of their essays for direct, on-line feedback, response, and critique by peers and/or the instructor. Further uses of Web CT will be considered. Following the advice of the Title III staff, I limited the work of my first "online semester" to one class. The course was ESL 82, Advanced Reading and Writing, the highest and final course of the ESL credit sequence. In my class, students are required to read assigned articles, stories, and a novel, and to write summaries, responses, discussions, and formal essays. The use of online communication was always related in some way to this coursework. Students learned to communicate in all the functions of the WebCT program that I had planned: email, chat rooms, and message boards. I also used the calendar and took personal photos of students and posted them. There were no serious problems or severely detrimental obstacles, and I found solutions for difficulties.
