Extractions: The basis for Esperanto was published in 1887 by Dr. Lejzer (Ludovic) Zamenhof, a brilliant and idealistic Jewish ophthalmologist in Warsaw. The idea of a planned international language was not a new one, but Zamenhof contributed the crucial insight that it must develop through collective use; accordingly, he restricted his initial proposal to a minimalist grammatical sketch, a vocabulary of some 900 words, some samples of poetry and prose, and a persuasive introductory essay. He believed that people from any background could learn the language 'as if in play', thanks to a transparent morphology and syntax freed from most of the complexities and inconsistencies of European languages (for an accessible overview, see Janton 1993: 41-89). Linked to Zamenhof's linguistic work was a progressively developed and refined critique of the links between language and nationalism (Zamenhof 1929; Lieberman 1979). The 'experiments' in question resemble the Columbia study mentioned above, in that they have usually set out to measure the effects of Esperanto instruction on the subsequent learning of other languages. The logic behind this approach is easy to understand. Esperanto's marginal position in the global language order has meant that teachers have often seen their strongest argument as presenting it as a 'modern Latin' for the beginning language learner. In justification it is argued that Esperanto's regularity and morphological transparency provide an ideal model for students to take the first tentative steps away from their mother tongue. In other words, learning Esperanto leads to an awareness of linguistic structure which can be built on in learning other languages.

Catalogues Through almost unbroken work of collecting data over a period of over 70 years the Library of the International Esperanto Museum (IEM) has created the world's largest collection of material on planned languages. Planned languages are an important aspect of human creativity. They are the subject of that branch of learning known since the first half of the 20th century as interlinguistics. After a few efforts in the Middle Ages the first developed planned languages appeared in the 16th century. They were to serve as instruments of logical thought. A number of outstanding personalities in European intellectual life turned their attention to the problem, among them Francis Bacon, Jan A. Komensky (Comenius), Rene Descartes, and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibnitz. From the middle of the 19th century a new type of planned language appeared, at first described as world auxiliary languages. As a result of the increase in international relations the pragmatic aspect was paramount. The problem of international communication became more and more acute. The creators of world auxiliary languages wanted to find a solution, hence they put great stress on practical use. After more than a century since its inception, Esperanto is now spoken by hundreds of thousands - in fact, probably millions - of people all over the world. Today the objective of Esperanto is the same as always: to become the one foreign language everybody studies and learns. While no foreign language is easy to master, Esperanto was intentionally designed to be as easy to learn as possible. Its grammar is concise and highly regular (no need to memorize verb conjugations), and its basic vocabulary consists of two thousand words or so - tens of thousands of words are formed with regular endings and other similar devices. You should be able to put Esperanto in use several times faster than any national language like French or Russian. You can learn the basics of Esperanto on the Internet with a personal tutor free of charge. The Free Esperanto Course consists of ten lessons with exercises. This initial text, which was both a tutorial and the manifesto for a new social movement, spread the word of a new international language known as Esperanto. At the time, there had been dozens of international languages already created. Many of these artificial languages were like Esperanto in the fact that they were created to be an axillary language, that is, a second language for people around the word in order to allow for improved global communication. Of all of the artificial languages, it was Esperanto which caught on the best. Though today there are only between a few hundred thousand and a few million speakers of Esperanto around the word, those devoted to advancing the goal of the international language are as dedicated as ever. There over 100 newspapers, magazines, and journals printed in Esperanto and many books are written in or translated into the language by devotees of the language and its movement.
