Extractions: English as a Second Language Composition Program All incoming international students including transfer students write an English composition placement test which is evaluated by trained English as a Second Language teachers at the Ohio State University. The test is an essay exam designed to assess the students writing proficiency in academic English. Students who need extra instructional support in writing may be placed in one of three levels corresponding to courses in the ESL Composition Program. The Office of Admissions notifies those international students who are required to take a placement test. The Office of International Education (OIE) informs new students about the date and time of the test. (for undergraduates), (for undergraduates), (for undergraduates), (for graduate students). Some students are Qualified on the basis of the placement composition; these students are not required to take any ESL composition courses. Students who meet or exceed the following test scores are exempt from taking the English Composition Placement Test: TOEFL 650, or TOEFL 610 and TWE 5; TOEFL Computer Based Test 280, or TOEFL Computer Based Test 253 and TOEFL Essay 5; MELAB Overall 95, or MELAB 90 and Composition Component 90. Extractions: The English Composition examination measures the skills developed in most first-year college composition courses. It measures the writing skills needed for college assignments and, in particular, for writing that explains, interprets, analyzes, presents, or supports a point of view. The exam does not cover some topics included in first-year college writing courses, such as research skills or literary analysis, nor does it require knowledge of grammatical terms as such. However, the student will need to apply the principles and conventions expected of academic written discourse. Two versions of the exam are offered. One version (known as the all-multiple-choice version) contains approximately 90 multiple-choice questions to be answered in 90 minutes. The other version (known as the version with Essay) has a 45-minute multiple-choice section with approximately 50 questions and another section with one essay question to be responded to in 45 minutes. Please note, this essay is to be typed into the examination software. The essay is scored at central locations by college faculty who teach writing courses. Each essay is read and assigned a rating by two scorers; the sum of the two ratings is weighted and then combined with the candidate's multiple-choice score. The resulting combined score is reported as a scaled score between 20 and 80. Separate scores are not reported for the multiple-choice and essay sections.
