Extractions: The 1995 Estuarine Research Federation (ERF) conference will be held at the Marriott Bayfront Hotel in Corpus Christi in November. The purpose of the conference is to exchange information on all aspects of research, management, and public policy regarding estuaries. The theme "Estuaries: Bridges from Watersheds to Coastal Seas" reflects recent emphasis on the central role that estuaries play in coupling the movement of materials between the land and the coastal zone. Because of this role, basic research into estuarine ecosystem processes is a priority with local, state, and federal government officials as they grapple with natural resources that are in decline or are being degraded. The ERF conference will provide researchers, managers, policy makers and educators with an opportunity to come together to exchange information on these important issues. The program will include plenary speakers and a series of integrated symposia organized to compare research and management in estuaries, coastal oceans, and Great Lakes ecosystems. The ERF biennial conference usually attracts about 700 people. Early registration is available until October 1; after that date the cost of participating in the conference will go up.

Extractions: stuaries are an important component of the complex and dynamic coastal watershed. The economy of many coastal areas relies on the natural beauty and bounty of estuaries. When those natural resources are imperiled, so are the livelihoods of the many people who live and work along the coast. As our population grows, the demands imposed on our natural resources increase and protecting these resources for all their natural, economic, and aesthetic values becomes even more important. An estuary is a partially enclosed body of water formed where freshwater from rivers, streams, and groundwater flows to the ocean, mixing with the salty seawater. Although influenced by the winds and tides, estuaries are protected from the full force of ocean waves, winds, and storms by the reefs, barrier islands, or fingers of land, mud, or sand that define an estuary's seaward boundary. Estuaries come in all shapes and sizes and go by many different names. They are often known as bays, lagoons, harbors, inlets, or sounds. Whatever the name or type, estuaries provide valuable functions.

Extractions: for Children, Students and Teachers We are pleased to announce the availability of the National Coastal Condition Report which describes the overall condition of the U.S. coastal waters as fair to poor, varying from region to region. The Report compiles several available data sets from different agencies and areas of the country and summarizes them to present a broad baseline picture of the condition of coastal waters. The Report , primarily evaluates estuaries areas where rivers meet the ocean in the continental United States. Indicators of coastal conditions were derived from data on water quality, sediment quality, biota, habitat, and ecosystem integrity, as they relate to ecological and human health. This Report describes the condition of coastal waters based primarily on data from estuaries and, where available, snapshots of the condition of near-coastal waters. A combination of data, mostly from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is used to present indicators of coastal condition and assessment and advisory data as it relates to human health. The Report also highlights several exemplary programs at the federal, state, tribal, and local levels that show coastal condition at various regional scales.

Extractions: provided by US Department of the Interior The study, published by the American Geophysical Union (AGU) and released last month, sheds new light on the role of the atmosphere as a source of pollutants to downstream estuaries. "This study provides important new information about how coastal watersheds process atmospheric nitrogen and about the amounts of atmospheric nitrogen that enter estuaries," said Richard Alexander, a USGS hydrologist and expert on nutrients who coauthored the study. "There are important scientific and policy questions about the role of atmospheric nitrogen in causing coastal water-quality problems. This information can help local resource managers determine sources of nitrogen entering estuaries. This improved understanding of the links between air deposition of nitrogen and coastal water quality also leads to a better scientific basis for steps to minimize coastal pollution sources." This national study of the watersheds that drain to 40 major US estuaries reported the highest atmospheric contributions a quarter to about a third of the nitrogen in streams along the northeastern and Mid-Atlantic coasts, including streams flowing to the Long Island Sound and Chesapeake Bay. Atmospheric contributions were also nearly this large in many streams along the Louisiana Gulf coast, which corresponded to the locally high levels of atmospheric deposition of nitrogen in this region. A USGS study published earlier this year reported that the atmosphere accounts for a similar percentage of the nitrogen (nearly 20 percent) in the waters of the Mississippi River that flow into the Gulf of Mexico.
