Part of the mission of the Department is to ground all cadets in the liberal arts. Additionally, government majors take a multidisciplinary collation of courses leading to either of two tracks: International Affairs or Public Policy. With these twin missions, Humanities offers more core courses than any other department. Seven out of twenty-four core curriculum courses are offered through the Humanities Department: English Composition, Literature, US History, Morals and Ethics, American Government, Criminal Justice, and Maritime Law Enforcement. In addition, the department offers over forty courses for government majors, which cadets from other majors may take as electives. Jackson is widely expected to rule against Microsoft when he issues his verdict possibly late this year or early next year. The case could wind through the appeals courts for years, however. Richard Schmalensee, dean of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Sloan School of Management, was slow to answer a question about Microsoft's contract conditions when Jackson posed the question of the day: "Assume Microsoft is a monopoly, would they then be anticompetitive?"

The "scorched earth" policies of the warring clans in Somalia caused a famine. When relief workers attempted to bring food in, one of the clans would burn it to prevent it from falling into the hands of their enemies. The U.S. indicated an interest in getting involved and aiding the famine-stricken. Fred Cuny studied the situation and decided the best strategy would be to avoid working in Mogadishu, the capital city. He wanted to create a "zone of tranquillity" away from the capital. Cuny believed that it was best to stay away from the cities because it was too difficult to give aid in such a chaotic setting. However, the U.S. government decided to they would try to solve the problem by landing in Mogadishu and restoring order there. Cuny needed to decide whether or to offer his expertise to the government in carrying out their plan or continue campaigning for his own. For Fred Cuny, it was an easy call. He felt the government's plan was dangerous, so he wrote op-ed articles in many major U.S. newspapers carefully spelling out his plans. But the U.S. government ignored the disaster relief expert and went into Mogadishu anyway. The expedition was a huge failure, with several Americans being killed and the famine still going strong after they left. It was not a happy situation for anyone involved, but once again Cuny demonstrated the depth of his understanding of relief efforts and what is needed to make them effective.

Abstract Benefits of Embryonic Stem Cell Research Finding cures for the first three highlights the most promising and immediate gains predicted from embryonic stem cell research, namely the ability to cure any disease resulting from or accompanying loss of specific cell types. New cells would be produced in the laboratory and then injected into the targeted tissue to slow and eventually halt the progression of the disease.[ii] Moreover, substantial tissue could be regenerated in vivo to restore the body to its original, pre-disease condition, as though the disease had never happened. In addition to these therapies, embryonic stem cell research may also aid patients in need of a transplant. There are currently over eighty-four thousand people waiting for an organ transplant in the United States, with little hope of success.[iii] The situation is even worse in South Africa, where only a few hundred persons donate organs each year.[iv] Initiatives intended to increase organ donation have done little to increase supply, and, ethical concerns notwithstanding[v] development of effective xenotransplantation techniques has proven disappointing, as have other approaches.[vi] Meanwhile, the demand for organs has steadily increased with no indication of decline.
