Following the agreement, the first bank called Bank of Abysinia was inaugurated in Feb.16, 1906 by the Emperor. The Bank was totally managed by the Egyptian National Bank and the following rights and concessions were agreed upon the establishment of Bank of Abyssinia:- The capital of the Bank was agreed to be Pound Sterling 500,000 and one-fifth was subscribed and the rest was to be obtained by selling shares in some important cities such as London, Paris and New York. The Bank was given full rights to issue bank notes and monitor coins which were to be legal tender and all the profits there from a ruing to the bank and freely exchangeable against gold and silver on cover by the Bank as well as to establish silver coins and abolish the Maria Theresa. Land was given to the Bank free of harges and permitted to build offices and warehouses.

The salt bar used as a medium of exchange in Ethiopia was called "guela" in Tigrigna, amole in Amaharic and its common name was " hew" which means salt both in Aamharic and Tigrigna.

    Extractions: Historians agree that Ethiopia is considered by some to be the oldest independent country in sub-Saharan Africa. The earliest evidence of Ethiopian history dates back to around 1000 BC when the Old Testament records that the Ethiopian Queen of Sheba visited King Solomon. The first recorded kingdom in Ethiopia grew around Aksum during the third century BC. According to many, Aksum was an offshoot of certain Semitic kingdoms of southern Arabia, and it eventually controlled the greatest ivory market in eastern Africa. Ethiopia influenced the nearly contemporary empire of Meroe in Sudan. Over the next few centuries, Aksum encroached more and more on Meroe until, when Christianity became the state religion in the 4th century AD, Aksum conquered the Sudanese kingdom. According to tradition, Christianity was adopted by the Ethiopians when a young Syrian named Frumentius, known in Ethiopia as Abba Salama, who grew up in Aksum, converted Emperor Ezana; the young man was later made the first Bishop of Ethiopia in 330 AD. Aksum subsequently expanded southwards and conquered parts of Yemen and southern Arabia. It remained a great power until the rise of Islam in the seventh century precipitated a decline. As Islam expanded, it effectively cut the Christian Ethiopian kingdom off from its Mediterranean trading partners. Muslims also replaced Egyptians in the Red Sea ports. Ethiopians were still allowed to consecrate their Bishops in Cairo, and pilgrims were able to travel across Muslim territory to Jerusalem.

The northern province of Eritrea - previously independent until 1952 when the United Nations merged it into Ethiopia - seceded from Ethiopia, to be run from its capital, Asmara, by the Eritrean People's Liberation Front (EPLF). Independence was declared in May 1993, and the two countries subsequently signed a number of economic and security agreements. Elections to the new national Constituent Assembly were held in June 1994, with the EPRDF winning 484 of the 547 seats; the elections had been boycotted by the OLF and other opposition groups, who once more alleged that the Meles administration had intimidated their supporters.

In Ethiopian history Cush is also known as Ethiops, the father of Ethiopia. Part of the Cushites who came from Mesopotamia settled in the Ethiopian Highlands. About 1500 B.B. Queen Hatshepsut of Egypt sent ships down the Red Sea to trade with the Ethiopians and other peoples living along the Red Sea coast. The Egyptians traded grains, glass, dishes, and other goods for ivory, monkeys, incense, gold. and different local products. On a wall of one of Queen Hatshepsut's temples in Egypt is a picture of these trading ships. About 1000 B.C. the Bible says the Queen of Sheba came to Jerusalem to visit King Solomon. She saw all of his great wealth and wisdom and praised God for what she saw. In Ethiopian tradition the queen's name was Makeda, and she had a son by King Solomon who was called Menelik I and became the King of Ethiopia. Some time between 750 and 500 B.C. Semitic peoples began to cross the Southern Red Sea from Arabia into Ethiopia. These were South Arabian tribes with more civilization than the Cushites upon whom they imposed their language and culture. The civilization of these Semitic peoples is called Sabean, and it had a great influence upon ancient Ethiopia. From one of these tribes, the Habeshat, the name Habesh, or Abyssinia, was given to the country. Another tribe, the Agazi , gave its name its name to Geez, one of the oldest languages of Ethiopia. Slowly the Cushites who were probably the peoples to live in Ethiopia and the Semites who came later to Ethiopia became one people. Over the years they built a kingdom around Axum in the Northern Ethiopian Highlands.

With the inclusion of savanna woodlands some 66 percent of the country was covered with forest or woodlands at that time. Over the last 5000 years, there has been progressive deforestation which has accelerated tremendously during the last century as the country's population has grown (Wood, 1990). Different sources indicate that about 35 - 40 percent of the country's land area was covered with high forests at the turn of the 19 century (Britenbach, 1961). However, rapid population growth (3 percent per year), extensive forest clearing for cultivation and over-grazing, movement of political centers, and exploitation of forests for fuelwood and construction materials without replanting has reduced the forest area of the country to 16 percent in the 1950's and 3.1 percent in 1982 (UNEP, 1983).Further estimates of the distribution of forest and woodland areas made on the basis of information from LANDSAT imagery (1979) revealed that 2.8 percent of the land surface is under forest and woodland (Kuru, 1990; MOA, 1991; Table 1).     Extractions: HISTORY Under the Emperors Theodore II (1855-68), Johannes IV (1872-89), and Menelik II (1889-1913), the kingdom began to emerge from its medieval isolation. When Menelik II died, his grandson, Lij Iyassu, succeeded to the throne but soon lost support because of his Muslim ties. He was deposed in 1916 by the Christian nobility, and Menelik's daughter, Zewditu, was made empress. Her cousin, Ras Tafari Makonnen (1892-1975), was made regent and successor to the throne. In 1930, after the empress died, the regent, adopting the throne name Haile Selassie, was crowned emperor. His reign was interrupted in 1936 when Italian Fascist forces invaded and occupied Ethiopia. The emperor was forced into exile in England despite his plea to the League of Nations for intervention. Five years later, the Italians were defeated by British and Ethiopian forces, and the emperor returned to the throne. After a period of civil unrest which began in February 1974, the aging Haile Selassie I was deposed on September 12, 1974, and a provisional administrative council of soldiers, known as the Derg ("committee") seized power from the emperor and installed a government which was socialist in name and military in style. The Derg summarily executed 59 members of the royal family and ministers and generals of the emperor's government; Emperor Haile Selassie was strangled in the basement of his palace on August 22, 1975.
