November 21, 2002 - The following story was provided in its entirety by Solomon Kibriye, webmaster of the Imperial Ethiopia Home Page : The Ethiopian Privatization Agency has agreed to return the Wabbi Shebelle Hotel to the heirs of its former owner, the late Prince Makonnen, Duke of Harrar . The duke, second son of Emperor Haile Selassie and Empress Menen , died in a car accident in 1958. In 1974, after deposing Haile Selassie, the Marxist military Dergue regime ordered the hotel nationalized. After the communist government of dictator Mengistu Haile Mariam fell in 1991, the new government set up an agency to privatize previously seized property. Crown Princess (Empress) Medferiashwork (widow of emperor-in-exile Amha Selassie Princess Sara Gizaw (widow of the Duke of Harrar) and Princess Mahisente (widow of Prince Sahle Selassie ) have each received one residential property back. The return of the hotel, however, is the most significant return of property to the imperial family.

History leading to Famine in Ethiopia The Modern Age of Ethiopia, which began in 1855, brought four very powerful emperors into rule, which expanded the empire and shaped modern Ethiopia. The first of these emperors, Theodore II, was a strong warrior who reassembled the army and used canons and roads to bring many of the regions under his control. He had delusions of grandeur, which were thwarted by those who did not share his dream of unity for Ethiopia. Theodore II ended his own life in 1868 after an argument with the British government (Kurtz 51). His successors, Yohannes and Menelik II, were able to triple the territory and add millions of people to Ethiopia. Emperor Yohannes struggled with invasions from Egypt, Italy, and Sudan during his rule from 1871 until he was assassinated by a sniper's bullet in 1889 (Kurtz 51). Menelik II was crowned Emperor in 1889 after uniting all of the provinces, including some of them that had been cut off for centuries. In 1896, Emperor Menelik fought Italian armies at Adwa, which was a decisive victory because he stopped Italian expansion in Ethiopia. Menelik's army of nearly eighty thousand people had to live off of

Nowadays, according to several narrators, young people are no longer interested in hearing about these. One narrator (Ethiopia 14), who moved from the lowlands to the highlands, emphasises that it is important to tell her children about their kinsmen in case they are victimised and need family protection. However, the traditional custom of informing the young about their family lineage is dying out since land is no longer inherited from relatives, and thus people's knowledge of family history and of kinship is apparently diminishing. The older generation remembers the Italian occupation during World War II and the violence that took place as the country was forcibly brought under Italian rule. The reign of Emperor Haile Sellassie, which followed, is spoken about nostalgically by some narrators, as being a time of peace and relative prosperity. Others recognise that there was no equality under Haile Sellassie and speak approvingly of the popular uprising that led to his overthrow and the redistribution of land that took place under the Derg (military regime 1974-89). One narrator (Ethiopia 21), referring to the civil war between the Derg and the opposition movements, describes the time of the Derg as one of "endless war". Relatively few narrators, however, say much about the fighting, possibly because the subject is not specifically raised by the interviewer, or perhaps because only some parts of the Meket region were directly affected by the conflict. Those who do, refer to conscription, heavy casualties among the men who went away to fight, and people being forced to flee; few narrators mention an allegiance to one side or the other. Some mention women's participation in the fighting, which led to them "being regarded as equal to men". Comments on the current government, the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), relate to its role in the development of the area and are generally fairly favourable, although one narrator (Ethiopia 4) says it seems to be oblivious to the current famine.

Lucy, alias Dinknesh - literally "you are lovely" - is the first woman in Ethiopian history, indeed in the history of the world. She was a dainty little person, an intrepid walker who came down from the trees some three million years ago in the Afar region of eastern Ethiopia. An American - French team of physical anthropologists led by Donald C. Johanson found 40 per cent of her skeleton in 1974, and named her Lucy after the Beatles song - though her Ethiopian descendants prefer to call her Dinknesh. The extent of her influence or power will forever remain a mystery. Whereas Lucy's fossilised bones are real nothing is known of her story. But when it comes to the Queen of Sheba there is a great story yet no concrete evidence to support it. Do not deny her existence in Ethiopia, however. One eminent Ethiopian historian, who referred to her at a public lecture in Addis Ababa as a legendary figure, was soon in trouble with the indignant audience.

Most of us identify Ethiopia with Emperor Hailie Selassie or the Queen of Sheba (Saba). The land of Sheba was referred to as Saba by the Ethiopians. The actual name of the Queen of Sheba was Queen Makeda. The time span between the reigns of Queen Makeda and Emperor Hailie Selassie is approximately 3000 years. Most of the world is familiar with this period of history wherein Ethiopians ruled a great civilization. Most people are unaware of the existence of at least 97 other sovereign rulers who reigned prior to Queen Makeda. Once we include the rule of these 97 sovereigns, Ethiopian civilization can be traced back to 3000 BC. We are familiar with Ethiopia from passages in the Old and New Testaments of the bible. Genesis, Chapter 2, verse 13 refers to 4 rivers that flowed out of Eden. One of these is the River Gihon which is the river that encircles Cush (sometimes in the bible Cush and Ethiopia are used interchangeably). The Gihon is another name for the Blue Nile River of Ethiopia. While visiting Ethiopia my family and I had the pleasure to stay at the Gihon Hotel in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Although she lives in a rural setting where access to school is often limited, she has made it to the fifth grade. In addition, she is progressing nicely with her studies and she wants to stay in school. But Hindi is not representative of the majority of girls in this sub-Saharan nation. Only 51 percent of Ethiopia's children make it as far as the fifth grade. And of all the children that do attend school in the country, only about a third are girls.

Extractions: Ethiopia is the oldest independent country in Africa and one of the oldest in the world. What is believed to be the oldest remains of a human ancestor ever found, which has been dated to some five million years old, has just been discovered in the Awash Valley in Ethiopia. This beats the discovery of "Lucy", a 3.2 million year old skeleton, who was unearthed in the same area in 1974. The Greek historian Herodotus, of the fifth century BC, describes ancient Ethiopia in his writings, while the Bible's Old Testament records the Queen of Sheba's visit to Jerusalem where "she proved Solomon with hard questions". Matters clearly went further than that because legend asserts that King Menelik - the founder of the Ethiopian Empire - was the son of the Queen and Solomon. Missionaries from Egypt and Syria reached Ethiopia in the fourth century and introduced Christianity. In the seventh century, the rise of Islam meant Ethiopia was then isolated from European Christianity. The Portuguese re-established contact with Ethiopia in the 1500s primarily to strengthen their control over the Indian Ocean and to convert Ethiopia to Roman Catholicism. A century of religious conflict followed resulting in the expulsion of all foreign missionaries in the 1630s. This period of bitter conflict contributed to Ethiopian hostility towards foreign Christians and Europeans which persisted until the twentieth century and was a factor in Ethiopia's isolation until the middle of the nineteenth century.
