5-0 out of 5 stars great easy book on science experiments
I used this to teach science at our homeschool co-op.It was very easy and taught great principles.I will buy it again when my grandchildren are old enough to do the experiements.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple and Informative
I purchased all three of the science activity books to help fill in a homeschool science program. I think I could probably use these books alone as a science program. These are great experiments with enough background for the non-science person to teach from. They use largely materials that you have lying around the house, and when they ask for something less available, there is often another experiment with more common items that teaches the same concept. Very adaptable to the multi-age classroom that most homeschoolers have. It's very easy to make the lessons harder for older students while not "losing" the Kindergarteners.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Earth Science Book:Activities for Kids
Although, at first glance this title looks too simple for my Middle School students, I must revise that opinion because the demonstrations and the labs I have been able to draw from this book have been exciting and will help greatly in this years classes. I believe that some of the material in this book will create an excitment in the classroom and help develop a much better understanding of many concepts for students who learn visually and by hands on experiences. I highly recommend this book to all teachers, parents, and students who have an interest in the Earth Sciences.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Earth Science Book
Excellent book for young, great for Cub Scouts, too.I may have to buy two so I can give one to my grandson.Perfect for home schooling.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for Elementary Use
I bought this book for use in my sixth grade classroom, it is a little to basic for my students but there are a few good demonstration and activity ideas.I bought the book looking for a large number of activities, and I found that this book has a little too much explanatory information on some subjects (1 activity every 2-3 pages in the book).I just wanted activities, not another textbook! I can see that for a self contained elementary classroom it would be a good resource and it should be marketed K-5.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's OK but where are the foldables
I had an earlier book that Dinah Zike had written about Earth Science ideas and foldables.I thought this would be the same.Since I allowed someone to borrow that book (and they never returned it), I am lost.

This book isn't anything like her other book. This is like the Janet Van Cleave books.Which is are OK, but I already have 1000s of activities.I needed the foldables to go with the activities I already have.

I was disappointed. But since it would cost almost half of the price of the book to return it....I just kept it and think it will be a good present for a brand new science teacher. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I am so glad I bought this book. As a homeschool mom of three,I have spent a lot of money buying books and curriculums for science and this book just explained everything clearly. My son suddenly had this lightbulb go on when I was talking to him about the water cycle and suddenly seeing the examples of them everywhere. Where was this book 5years ago when I first started homeschooling?
Would have saved me some sleepless nights worrying about a science curriculum or how I was going to explain certain concepts to them without having to spend tons of money or paraphrasing everything.
The books has great scripting and leading questions to ask the children. Great visuals as well. I can't wait to get my hands on other books by her.

5-0 out of 5 stars science help for teachers, parents, and homeschoolers
Elaine Levenson has done a fabulous job of putting together a book of science teaching principles and ideas for people who work with children, ages 4-10.The book begins with three chapters that tell us how toencourage the inquisitive nature of young children and nurture theirscience skills, how to organize a science unit, and how to make thelanguage connection with science. These chapters are very clearly writtenin a pleasing format, so they are user-friendly even to the scientificallyilliterate (like me). The rest of the chapters cover topics such asweather, animals, seed-bearing plants, and ecology in a beautifullyorganized fashion. Each unit begins with a list of objectives and a goodbase of information on the topic for the adult. Then the activities andprocedures section begins, starting with the easiest and most concretelessons and progressing to more difficult ones. Thus, each unit is ideallysuited to families with siblings of all ages.At the end of each unit arelists of further rescources, grouped for children, adults and olderchildren, and literature connections for younger children. There are alsosuggestions for field trips and other community connections. One thing Ilike about this book and its companion volume, Teaching Children AboutPhysical Science, is that the graphics are pleasing and the text is easy tofollow. But also, the author has a sound appreciation for how children'scuriosity about the natural world around them easily creates opportunitiesfor making science moments happen. I highly recommend this book to allparents and teachers, but especially to homeschoolers!

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple science experiments for children
I just love this book.It is one I will be using often. If I had been taught this way in school I would have loved science. This book is filledwith simple, interesting science lessons and experiments.Divided intoeight subjects:models; the five senses; weather; volcanoes, rocks anderosion; animals and insects; seed bearing plants; and ecology.I highlyrecommend it.It has lessons anyone can do with objects around the houseand my kids love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy, inexpensive, and fun science for teachers and parents
Elaine Levenson has written two of the very best hands-on science books for teachers, parents, or homeschoolers. The experiments are easy to follow and don't require elaborate, expensive equipment or a Ph.D in rocketscience. I have used this book in my teaching, writing, and with my ownchildren. With this book, and its companion volume Teaching Children aboutPhysical Science, you'll have everything you need for great science. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Far From Age-Appropriate
I work in a private school that uses a mix of Bob Jones and A-Beka.I was introduced to this curriculum recently and I was immediately worried. In reading the foreword of the text, the authors claim that they made the text easier to read and less complicated in this edition.I beg to differ, and I pity the students who had to read the previous editions.

With experience in the public school and plenty of upper-level college science, education, and literacy courses, I can tell readily when a textbook is not age appropriate and what it takes to understand the text.

I decided to examine this book at a deeper level then what I originally wanted to because I was given an education regarding literacy and age-appropriateness of literature.I gave this the ol' Fry Readability test in multiple places in the textbook.

Now, remember, this is a book meant for 8th graders.

These are my results.

Trial 1:
Sentences per 100 words -- 3.9
Syllables per 100 words -- 152
Reading Level -- 11th Grade

Trial 2:
Sentences per 100 words -- 4.5
Syllables per 100 words -- 160
Reading Level -- 12th Grade

Trial 3:
Sentences per 100 words -- 5.5
Syllables per 100 words -- 145
Reading Level -- 9th Grade

Average Reading Level = 11 (rounded up)

Understanding the current American situation where reading is a chore, this textbook is almost guaranteed to be over instructional level for a majority of students.

For fun, I decided to try this once more on the glossary within the textbook, thinking to myself that if there was ever one portion of the textbook that would need to get information across easily to students, it would be here.

Glossary Results (wait for it):
Sentences per 100 words -- 5
Syllables per 100 words -- 171
Reading Level -- College and above.

Conclusion:Based on my understanding of scientific education and literacy assessment measures, this textbook is far from age appropriate.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dull and wrong-headed
I encountered this book when tutoring the daughter of a friend. On the positive side: It has pretty pictures. That's about it.This title is sold as an 8th-grade text.It is dry, gives a dull, encyclopedic overview, and never goes into any depth for real understanding (except, perhaps, for the phases of the moon and eclipses). It uses advanced terms and refers to sophisticated concepts without explanation.Additionally, any time that there is some bit of cosmological history that scientists do not swear to know to the exact detail (for example, competing theories around the origin of the Earth's moon), the authors use this as evidence that evolution is wrong. One can indeed poke holes here and there in Darwin, but that's just goofy. And insidious. And ultimately, boring. It's a crime to make to universe so dull.(I have a degree in Physics and have been teaching high school science for ten years.)
