Product Description
An A-to-Z sourcebook that explains the terms and concepts associated with the sciences of natural catastrophe. This book covers the places in the world, throughout history, where such events have occurred. The events covered include the eruption of Mount Edna from 1226 BC to the present day,the destruction of Pompeii and Herculaneum by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, the violent movement in the San Andreas Fault in 1906, and recent eruptions such as Mount St. Helens and Mount Pinatubo.Amazon.com Review
From aa to Yellowstone, if it's got anything at all to do with earthquakes or volcanoes, you're likely to find within the pages of this updated encyclopedia from science journalist David Ritchie and Rutgers geology professor Alexander Gates.

The 1,000-plus alphabetical listings range from historical volcanoes and quakes (both famous and obscure) to entries on specific seismic phenomena (everything from parasitic cones to jökulhlaup) and general geological principles, including a few excellent in-depth discussions on topics like plate tectonics and seismic wave types. The encyclopedia also contains a lengthy bibliography, a list of Internet resources, a chronological listing of notable quakes and eruptions, and a handful of unforgettable eyewitness accounts (after the eruption of Vesuvius in A.D. 79, apparently Pliny the Elder's party went out "having pillows tied upon their heads with napkins; and this was their whole defense against the storm of stones that fell around them").

With its clear, newspaper-style entries, the Encyclopedia of Earthquakes and Volcanoes will be navigable even to geo-newbies, but its a-to-z organization makes it more useful as a reference than as a stand-alone text. (Then again, given its liberal cross-referencing, you can easily find yourself led to a long, enjoyable read.) --Paul Hughes ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars HANDY GEOLOGY REFERENCE
This is a handy book to have as a geology resource and would be most useful to any student of our earth's seismic activity.Articles include material on historical eruptions and earthquakes, rock formations and areas of research and exploration.Unlike other works of this kind, the authors address each state of the US, describing the seismic activity recorded there. It turns out several are more geologically active than we imagine!

I give it three stars because I feel a much more thorough book could have been produced here. The authors could have gone into a lot more detail on many of the entries, especially the historical ones.As it is they simply lay out the facts in a dry, dull fashion.A few more months of work and research could have produced a five star work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference covering specific earthquakes/volcanoes
It's exactly what the title says.Very dry, just the facts, but very extensive and detailed. If you're looking for a great reference book or if you like to read concise factual summaries....then you'll love this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A work in progress
This encyclopedia begins with an entry for `aa' (a particular type of lava flow) and ends with a page-worth of data on Yellowstone National Park.In between, all geophysical phenomena associated with earthquakes and volcanoes are covered alphabetically, including anecdotes on many individual eruptions or shakings, e.g. the Kobe earthquake in Japan.

I enjoyed reading the "Encyclopedia of Earthquakes and Volcanoes" but thought it must be a work in progress (I have the new edition) as there were many typos and one astronomical quibble:

* "Io is the hottest place in the solar system outside the sun (p. 105)"---actually I believe that honor belongs to Venus.Io's average surface temperature is 130 K whereas the surface of Venus averages 740 K (hotter even than Mercury).

Another interesting oddity concerning earthquakes, is that the authors tend to favor the Mercalli Scale, which is based on ordinary human observations, rather than the Moment magnitude.

Not all of the black-and-white photographs are dated, and the cover photograph of a volcanic eruption is not identified (although a friend of mine from Oregon swears it is Mt. St. Helens).Ideally, a newer edition of this book will label all of the photographs, and perhaps include a few in color.

All quibbling aside, this is an interesting book that fills a useful niche. It will definitely remain in my reference library.

"Appendix B" which includes "Eyewitness Accounts of Major Eruptions and Quakes" is absolutely fascinating, and it alone is worth the price of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars I REALLY LOVE THIS BOOK!
Hi, I really like this book. It's bben helpfully to me for my carrer. Thanks, Michelle Trzecisnki

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction.
In a unique and very handy A-Z format, here in one volume is all the information you are ever likely to need on these most dramatic natural phenomena.
The great earthquakes and famous volcanic eruptions are comprehensively covered, with clear explanations of the geologic concepts and terms, interesting photos and maps, and thumbnail biographies of leading figures in the study of these majestic forces of nature. A particularly interesting feature is the inclusion of each state with an evaluation of its seismic potential. (There are some surprises here). Highly recommended as a very useful single-volume introduction for libraries and interested individuals.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Unique Monograph
This monograph by Prof. Towhata is a timely and comprehensive presentation useful to practicing professionals and educators alike.
It is nearly ten years since a similar effort by Prof. Kramer; thus, the updating and special style of noting the levels of content are especially useful. The size of this volume allows graphical depictions that are concise and yet clear. Such a hard copy presentation is an excellent handbook. Towhata has also provided an E-mail address whereby he solicits comment and/or critique, and responds promptly.Although the title speaks for itself, I must advise prospective purchasers that I have presented several copies to close colleagues and students. The cost, via Amazon, is particularly reasonable; you will not be disappointed !!

1-0 out of 5 stars "How Not To Be A Comedian" ,should be this book's title!!!
For any serious fan of the disaster movie genre who, probably like me,is looking for the ULTIMATE GUIDE to this very unique type of
film genre in books, you will not find it in this one unfortunately.
Especially,if you're looking for professional film reviews.Sadly,
both Glenn Kay and Michael Rose drown us to death with such lame
and inane Canadian humor that one feels like begging them to make
them stop.If you are a fan of such disaster flicks like: THE DAY
AFTER TOMORROW,DANTE'S PEAK,ARMAGEDDON,DEEP IMPACT,VERTICAL LIMIT,THE PERFECT STORM,INDEPENDENCE DAY,WHEN TIME RAN OUT,THE DAY
AFTER,BEYOND THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE,AIRPORT,METEOR(1979 VERSION),
CITY ON FIRE,AVALANCHE,THE SWARM,THE HINDENBURG,CRACK IN THE WORLD,
GRAY LADY DOWN,THE CONCORDE:AIRPORT'79,AVALANCHE EXPRESS,K-19:THE WIDOWMAKER,RAISE THE TITANIC,S.O.S.TITANIC,TERROR ON THE 40TH FLOOR,BURNING RAGE(1984),CAVE-IN!(1983),CONDOMINIUM(1980),HANGING BY A THREAD(1979),THE ELEVATOR(1974),HEAT WAVE!(1974),SMASH-UP ON INTERSTATE 5(1976),FLOOD!(1976),HURRICANE(1974),HURRICANE(1979),THE LAST DAYS OF PLANET EARTH aka: THE GREAT PROPHECIES OF NOSTRADAMUS(1974),ROLLERCOASTER(1977),KINJI FUKASAKU'S epic film: VIRUS(1980),STARFLIGHT ONE aka: STARFLIGHT THE PLANE THAT COULDN'T LAND(1983),TURBULENCE(1997),then more than likely you'll find yourself groaning throughout as Canadians,Glenn Kay and Michael Rose,do everything within their poking fun of powers to try to make us snicker and laugh throughout, though completely-failing miserably! And to make matters even more worse, you can actually drive a Mack truck through all of the mistakes and inaccuracies that they have literally scattered throughout their so-called reviews. And it's even more sad, that they even failed to mention such disaster films like: ADVENTURES OF THE QUEEN(1975)DEADLY HARVEST(1977),A FIRE IN THE SKY(1978),DEATHQUAKE(1980),THE LAST SONG(1980),UNCOMMON VALOR(1983),and AVALANCHE ALLEY(2002).Not quite what it needs to be,or really should be,for the serious disaster movie fan/collector!

3-0 out of 5 stars Great Concept With Some Hiccups In Execution
For disaster-movie fans like myself, there aren't many choices among books devoted to the subject. In that regard, "Disaster Movies" functions as a treasure trove of commentary on well-worn classics like "Earthquake" and "The Towering Inferno", as well as some more esoteric selections, notably the camp classic "Kingdom of the Spiders".

Aside from the fact that the commentary is light on serious criticism, my primary problem with the book is how some elementary facts get mangled. For example, in reviewing the feature film "Deep Impact", the authors incorrectly refer to Elijah Wood's character as an amateur astrologist as opposed to an amateur astronomer.A slip-up like that might have been overlooked had they also not made the same mistake in describing Annabella Sciorra's character in the made-for-TV mini-series "Asteroid".(She was a professional astronomer in that movie.)And I was really disappointed that they didn't at least mention the best movie from the death-from-above sub-genre, the 1978 made-for-TV drama "A Fire In The Sky".

Understand that if you decide to pick up this book you're not going to get the same level of criticism that you would if you were reading a pro like Roger Ebert or Michael Medved."Disaster Movies" is what it is--a fun, if error-riddled, book about the terrible things that happen when Hollywood star power and crazy screenwriters collide.

1-0 out of 5 stars Merely uninformed opinions, nothing more
This book reads like the author sat down, watched each film once and then tried to write up a "funny" opinion. No research (beyond maybe IMDB), no insight, no context, no behind-the-scenes information, no interviews --- nothing. In other words, anyone could have written this book. What's worse is he gets a lot of information wrong -- it's so lazy. For example he delights in describing how confusing the TV movie "Flood!" is, but he is clearly reviewing it from theold edited VHS release, not the original movie. This information is so easy to locate, but I suppose research might have gotten in the way of the "jokes".Maybe it would be forgivable if the jokes were funny, but they're not -- just boring and obvious. If you've ever been trapped standing in a movie line and forced to listen to some "know-it-all" guy's self-absorbed and wrong-headedyammering about movies he feels superior to -- that's exactly what reading this book is like.A real shame.

4-0 out of 5 stars I'm still waiting for the ultimative Disaster-Movies-Reference-Work
In meantime there exists more Disaster Movies on the screens, than stars on heaven. For the fan it becomes harder and harder to keep the overview. It seems that the autors had the same problems. They write about all sub-genres from water, lava, earthquakes, toairplanes, snow till radioactivity and fire. They even have chapters about swarms of killeranimals, parodies and invasion from outer space, but they only grat on the surface. For a reference-work this book is far too incomplete. Not a must for the filmbuff but ok for a beginner. For a filmbook they could have included more pictures !

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing!!! A Total Waste Of Money!!
What a huge disappointment! Really boring infantile reviews and some Really throwaway extras. I would love to have my money and time back. It's written by 2 Canadians and their choices are really lame. The color posters in the middle are the biggest disappointment. What kind of Disaster genre book wouldn't include The Poseidon Adventure (the greatest disaster poster of all time), Titanic or any of the good movies. Save your money!!! ... Read more

Product Description
At 9:51 PM on August 31, 1886, William Ashmead Courtenay, the much-respected mayor of Charleston, South Carolina, was relaxing aboard the Etruria, an elite Cunard Line luxury liner bound for New York from Liverpool. At that same moment, the most powerful earthquake ever to strike the East Coast rolled through South Carolina and devastated Charleston, killing over 150 people and damaging or destroying over 90% of the historic city's masonry buildings within sixty seconds.Within ten minutes, it had spread its terror throughout half the nation, causing panic and damage as far north as Toronto, east to Long Island, south to Cuba, and west to St. Louis. The nation was stunned. No one in Charleston, or anywhere on the East coast, ever thought such an unthinkable catastrophe of such magnitude could possibly strike east of the Mississippi. They were very, very wrong.

City of Heroes: The Great Charleston Earthquake of 1886, is a riveting, heavily illustrated non-fiction book filled with gripping, first-hand accounts of the earthquake, drawn directly from newspapers, personal diaries, journals, and letters of the earthquake survivors. It will also follow the earthquake sleuths who descended upon Charleston to discover what caused the disaster. But above all, it identifies the noble and heartwarming acts of numerous unsung heroes, black and white, inspired and led by Charleston's extraordinary mayor, William A. Courtenay. Working together, they saved numerous lives, nursed the wounded, fed the hungry, sheltered the homeless, and enabled Charleston to make a full recovery from the massive disaster within eighteen months. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Present - S.C. Lovers

5-0 out of 5 stars Part science, part history, all fascinating...
Charleston, South Carolina is my favorite city, so it's only natural that I enjoy books that deal with the Holy City.City of Heroes: The Great Charleston Earthquake of 1886 is a fascinating account of this little known event.

Most people know that Charleston has been plagued by hurricanes, fires and wars. But most are not aware that in 1886, the city suffered a devastating earthquake--the worst east of the Mississippi in US history. On a sultry summer evening on August 31st, Charleston and the surrounding areas were rocked by a major quake.Although seismic equipment was not available at the time, geologists have determined that it was probably between 7.3-7.6 on the Richter Scale. Dozens of people died and dozens more were injured.Two-thirds of Charleston's population (40,000 people) were left homeless. The quake also caused many fires and several fatal train wrecks.Overall, the quake "spread a dry tidal wave of destruction throughout 2.5 million square miles of land."Even towns 300 miles away suffered moderate damage.Soldiers who fought in the Civil War agreed that the quake was worse than "the horrors of war."The quake also took away the sense of security enjoyed by Charlestonians because of the many tremors and small quakes that occurred on a daily basis after August 31st.It wasn't until 20 years later that the quakes and tremors finally subsided. For months afterward, they were a daily occurrence.

Cote' provides us with a fascinating look at all aspects of the earthquake including the after effects, the search for ground zero, the rebuilding effort, fundraising, and the many individuals who performed heroic acts.Part of City of Heroes is a story of science.Every time more knowledge became available about earthquakes, scientists went back and restudied the Charleston quake. Many of their discoveries are fairly recent. But most of this book is a story of history, and Cote' provides us with interesting research. When Charleston mayor Courtenay realized the city would receive no federal or state financial aid, he appealed to the rest of the US for help. This triggered "an outpouring of warmth, sympathy, and financial support the likes of which had never been seen before in the South."But more surprisingly, the biggest contributors were from "the heart of the Union" whose "money flowed like water."Much of the money came from former soldiers. Also, when a week-long gala was held to celebrate the completion of rebuilding, the city was laid out in red, white and blue with tens of thousands of American flags. Not a single state flag was on display and only one Confederate flag.It is obvious that both North and South were anxious to put the Civil War behind them--something that generations today can't quite seem to do.

The earthquake is also responsible for the beautiful, historic Charleston that tourists flock to today. After suffering through the Civil War, a cyclone in 1885 and then the earthquake, Charlestonians were too poor to raze the city and rebuild. So they were forced to repair as best they could using earthquake bolts. This allowed thousands of historic buildings to be saved, and those same earthquake bolts can still be seen on almost all buildings that were in existence in 1886.

City of Heroes is Cote's fourth book, and his third with a "Charleston" theme.I think that he's at his best when writing about Charleston, and City of Heroes is his best book to date.

5-0 out of 5 stars Charleston resident/earthquake fan
As a lifelong resident of Charleston SC I have heard of the earthquake since childhood but had found little information. Mr. Cote has put within reach of the everyday person facts that here-to-fore have been inaccessible. He documents the causes, effects, and long term results. Not only does he relate Charleston's history from her birth in 1670 as Charles Towne, but he emphasizes the strength of her people as they overcame epidemics of disease, devastating fires, British invasion and siege in 1781-82, bombardment and occupation by the Union Army in 1863-65, and the unleashed forces of nature in the forms of tornadoes, cyclones, and now her hardest hit -- the Great Earthquake of 1886.Genealogists will find this a useful tool as Mr. Cote records names of injured and killed as well as the ordinary people who became the heroes. He ends on a sober note explaining the devastation, destruction, and loss of life that will occur with the next big one. Those fault lines which erupted in 1886 are still being stressed, the plates are still moving, and the pressure will release when it builds to the point it can no longer be contained. He warns: be prepared, be educated, and above all don't be complacent. The book contains maps, diagrams, informative end notes and bibliography. This is an interesting read and a valuable addition to one's library.

5-0 out of 5 stars a comprehensive look at disaster recovery that worked
In 1886, Charleston, SC got the smackdown.A major earthquake just plain flattened the place, with after-shocks to keep everyone good and nervous. This is the story.Dick Cote always does a good job of research, so that aspect of _City of Heroes_ didn't surprise me at all.

After the disaster came the recovery effort, and that part surprised me quite a bit.It seems that some places, when struck by disaster, just roll over and wave their arms and legs; they expect others to save them, that they need do nothing for themselves.Give me, help me, send me, take me, do it all for me, that's the battle cry.Charleston wasn't like that.It accepted a lot of donations from around the country, got to work, and rebuilt itself. It took charge. It neither had nor needed a FEMA.Civic spirit took the place of government dollars thrown at the problem, because in fact Charleston got few government dollars. The one entity most conspicuous by its non-participation was the Federal government.

Cote rounds the book out with a couple of long discussions (one from the period and one more recent) about the scientific aspects of the quake. Why would one happen in Charleston, seemingly far from subduction zones where such events are more or less expected? They wondered in 1886, and they now have a pretty good handle on it.

Last comes a section I particularly enjoyed:lessons learned. What does a place need to do once it's been knocked flat by Ma Nature? I find it impossible to disagree with his analysis. The results Charleston achieved speak for themselves:within a year the place was nearly back to normal.Evidently they wanted normality badly enough to recreate it for themselves, rather than just lay there screaming to be rescued/saved/paid/fed/etc.

Good for Charleston.I've never been there, but if its people are still like this, good for them. And good for Cote, to have assembled this impressive study on a little-known bit of U.S. history.

5-0 out of 5 stars Detailing a Little-known Disaster
August 31, 1886, was a night of horror in Charleston and Summerville, South Carolina, when faults gave way, destroying buildings and impacting thousands of lives.Richard Côté, in City of Heroes, takes his readers through the terrifying darkness of that night with the sounds and destruction of the earthquake and fires; he then follows the relief and rebuilding efforts of the next months. With admirable fortitude the people of Charleston put their world back together.Without aid from the state and with unimaginably meager federal assistance, the city organized and financed initial relief and repairs with amazing speed and efficiency. The flood of totally private donations, especially those from northern states, left citizens feeling gratifyingly bound to the rest of the country. The author uses many photographs and primary sources, including Charleston's excellent newspaper, the News and Courier, to develop a timeline and to paint portraits of the men who led the city's recovery. The recovery approaches used in 1886 form the basis of Mr. Côté's Charleston Disaster Recovery Model.A particularly interesting aspect of the book is its discussion of the investigative team from the U.S. Geological Survey and their work and conclusions. The book is rigorously documented, highly objective, and readable.Could it happen again? One of the final chapters brings the reader up-to-date on scientific work in the area and provides both Internet and printed sources of earthquake-preparedness information--just in case. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Technical but written for Homeowner
Any book that can save your home and family is good, but one that is clear, entertaining, and money-saving, is a winner. I had a cripple-wall under our house. The book showed me how to install blocking and plywood sheathing for about $20 (plus a morning swinging a hammer in the 2' tall crawlspace), saving hundreds over using a contractor. Securing water heaters, bookshelves, kitchen cabinets, sill-plates, etc. are also covered.

One tip not mentioned in the book--attach your knicknacks and crystal display vases to shelves/furniture with Quake Wax. It's expensive but doesn't harm furniture, sticks tenaciously, and comes off when you want. Our house came through the 1989 Bay Area quake just fine!

Yanev also talks about the importance of soil and location (his old pictures of devastation in unpopulated areas near Daly City, and new ones of housing tracts now in the same location, are chilling!) Pictures of damaged and undamaged houses in the Bay Area, Gilroy/Los Gatos and Southern California, illustrate the need for and performance of the retrofits. Every do-it-your-selfer in California should buy and use this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Series for adults now rewritten for teens
I have always enjoyed the adult series of Left Behind books. The kids books are just as good. The kids interact with the characters from the adult series, experience the same events, etc. However, since the main characters are teens, these books can appeal to younger readers. So far, the stories haven't had the ups and downs that the adult series has had.The adult series has books that are a lot more boring than others. The kids series seems to be good in every book. These are not for really young kids, but would be appropriate for young teens.I enjoy them and I am an adult.

Ryan Daley is at Vicki's house, and when the earthquake starts, he falls to the basement and the water cooler bursts and Ryan cant move. Will someone find him in time?
Lionel Washinton is with Conrad when the earth starts to shake. He gets hit on the head, and forgot his memory. He finds a bible, and notes in his journal. But cannot remember anything from before the earthquake. Will his memory come back?
This book is a great book, and its one of my favorites in the seris. But take caution when you read it. It is a very emotional and sad book. I recemond reading this as well as the rest of the books in the seris.

5-0 out of 5 stars Earthquake
First and foremost, Alyssa Hewitt shoud have been saved, not let fall to her death. That was just horrific by the ghost writer, I would've had Jessica saving her or some special element brings Alyssa back to life. I'm working on that one for a special story, and Olivia as well.I didn't like to read about Alyssa dying like that, she should've been saved.

There was great drama as there's a little bit of 'Hero', the one with Dustin Hoffman, involving Devon Whitelaw being 'the liar' that saved people as Elizabeth and Enid think he is a hero, but Dustin Hoffman would call him a liar. You have to read to find out what kind of a liar Devon is, probably did it to get Elizabeth to be interested in him. It's sad how Todd/Elizabeth would break up, probably stay apart in the Senior year and reunite in college.

Everything else was like the Earthquake of the 1970s, and the 1990s real life quakes Southern Calif. has experienced. Only thing missing was HIghway 14 falling down on the Interstate 5.

Does anybody know if in Seniors they acknowledge the quake/rebuilding of Sweet Valley?

When a Earthquake hits Sweet Valley on the twins 17th birthday, 2 people are killed one of them is Enid's ex-boyfriend.The other is Olivia Davidson.I didn't care for her because she had no brothers and sisters.I hate that! Jessica tries to save a little girl,Alyssa, who had a party, too but failed. You're a teen,Jess. Not a Superheroine! Steven Does find Ned and Alice ok at The Plaza Theater, and Billie is ok,too at the Shop N Hop.

5-0 out of 5 stars Earthquake
Earthquake by Francine Pascal is at times touching but overall a very excellent book.As the story starts out, Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield, the twin sisters in Sweet Valley, are having their 17th birthday party. They live in California, along a fault line, and their town is prone to earthquakes.During their party, a devestating earthquake shatters their celebration. They have to look through the rubble of their once standing home to try and find their friends. But who out of their friends survive?Read Earthquake and find out!

I would recommend this book to mainly teens who enjoy drama and love/relationships.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well done Ms. Pascal!
This is truly an amazing work of art.I wish in a way I could go back in time 45 years, to when I was in high school, and be presented with such an emotionally, charged, well-written novel.I am afraid that in my coddled youth I may not have been up to the task, unfortunately. If I was one of those really hard-nosed high school teachers, like Crazy Joe Clark in "Lean on Me," my students would read nothing but Sweet Valley High.I do not believe there is anything better suited to preparing "real-world" kids to the emotional and physical trials and tribulations of life today.

The context of a devastating earthquake sets a perfect stage. As she lies buried under the rubble, Jessica Wakefield laments her family's tragic history of emotional, and yes, physical, abuse. As I read I could feel the conflicting emotions she experienced as the rubble cleared above her.The light revealed not only a hope of continued life, but also the scowling face of her abusive and perverted father.Meanwhile, just yards away her sister Elizabeth, the "flighty" twin, worries about her missing press-on nail (right ring finger).

I have read nearly 200 novels centering on these characters, but I realize that I never really KNEW many of them until picking up this book and watching the grotesque physical disfigurements many were faced with, and the utter devastation in their lives...

Overall, I must give this book 5 stars.Within the genre of tragic teen drama, "Earthquake (Sweet Valley High Super Edition)" gives "Romeo and Juliet" a run for its money.Only time will tell if this book achieves the cult status of "R&J," but I do believe that "Earthquake (Sweet Valley High Super Edition)" is significantly better written. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The best par t of Cracker Jacks is the prize inside....
I finally had a chance to crack open the surprise inside my copy of the Quake Handbook (two CD-ROMs at the back of PART B and another in Part A). And what a surprise!!! If I printed out all of the material packed into these the 3 included CD-ROMs, you could fill your departmental library.

Useful and rare. The CDs contain something for anyone and everyone. The contents are so voluminous, I'm thankful they had the good sense to index the contents and include this on the CD as a searchable database via Adobe PDF. So, when your colleague down the hall asks you to help him locate an odd reference, equation, or image, you should show him/her your hefty pair.Together the paired volumes and the contents of the 3 CD-ROMS are a seismological librarian's dream, including many rare and out-of-print classics.Truly a digital treasure chest of authoritative content neatly packaged. Frankly, I'm surprised L-severe did not charge extra for the CD content, as the information content is a tiny fraction of an equivalent journal subscription. I love it when they put a free toy inside. ... Read more

Very well organized and presented.Covers the basics very well with easy to understand terminology. It lacks extensive detail regarding the topics covered....but I think that's the point.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Choice Of Disasters
Furious Earth by Ellen J. Prager [with help from Stanley Williams (Surviving Galeras), Kate Hutton (one of SoCals TV seismologists and the author of the earthquake updates on the TriNet earthquake website), and Costas Synolakis] is a well-written introduction to earthquakes, volcanoes, and tsunamis. This book appears to be aimed at junior high/high school aged readers, but adult readers who have no background in these subjects will also enjoy the book.An earlier reviewer suggested that the book has the coverage of the better chapters of an earth science textbook, but I wish high school earth science texts were this well-written.I enjoyed reading the book despite the depth of my background and appreciate the refresher course that Furious Earth gave me.My only complaint concerns the ordering of the color plates at the center of the volume. The pictures are out of order to their mention in the text and the only thing that comes to mind is that they were ordered the way they were to make them fit on a limited number of plate pages.Furious Earth belongs on the shelves in as many elementary and secondary school libraries as possible and would be a wonderful gift for a budding earth scientist.

5-0 out of 5 stars Furious Earth-
I am a sixth grade teacher and was given this book at a scienceconference. After just beginning to read it, I immediatly went online tosee how much the book cost- I want to order one for each for my students! It will be a bit hard and I will have to do some serious directing, but thebook is an excellent example of a clear, scientific, organized, up-to-date,and interesting (yes- interesting enough for 30 sixth graders) nonfictionbook in the field of earth science. Furious Earth combines"PBS-like" research discussions and theory- (Plate TechtonicsDiscovered, Paleotsunamis...) with "RealTV-like" examples (Italy,79 A.D.: Vesuvuis; The World's Largest and Smallest Quakes). The book is asurprisingly suspenseful, fascinating, and easy read (for us unscientificfolk). The 16 color pages of graphs and pictures also add to the subject.I can't wait to see their eyes grow when I read to them Chapter 2-Earthquakes.It starts off with the 1994 Northridge, CA quake... It hookedme at least...

Product Description

Developments in Earthquake Engineering have focussed on the capacity and response of structures. They often overlook the importance of seismological knowledge to earthquake-proofing of design. It is not enough only to understand the anatomy of the structure, you must also appreciate the nature of the likely earthquake.

Seismic design, as detailed in this book, is the bringing together of Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology. It focuses on the seismological aspects of design – analyzing various types of earthquake and how they affect structures differently. Understanding the distinction between these earthquake types and their different impacts on buildings can make the difference between whether a building stands or falls, or at least to how much it costs to repair.

Covering the basis and basics of the major international codes, this is the essential guide for professionals working on structures in earthquake zones around the world.

Have you ever wondered about earthquakes? Are they dangerous? How do they start? Well if you want top know the answers, I recommend you read Earthquakes by Paul P. Sipiera.
In this book you will learn about various sub topics such as earths plates, why the earth shakes, the San Andreas Fault, and the many dangers of earthquakes. This book is very easy to read and understand. It breaks things down so its easy to read and understand, and provides pictures along the way to guide you threw things.
Earthquakes happen all the time, and many people don't see the dangers of them. The book states, "Major earthquakes cause great loss of life."People need to be more aware of there surroundings. The book also states, "no place on earth is totally safe from earthquakes." This is why we need to be aware of these things, because they could happen anywhere at anytime.
Overall, I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in this subject. It's an easy read, which would benefit you in many ways. Even if you couldn't care less about earthquake, I'm sure this book would interest you.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fine place to start for information on earthquakes
Having experienced the 6.8 earthquake that hit the Seattle area on February 28, my son and I were eager to read up on earthquakes. What better place to turn that the True Book series? After all, my older daughter used to eat up the series like bon bons during her summer vacations.

The Sipiera book did not disappoint. It is chock-full of fascinating photos and simple, easy-to-understand text. What really stands out about the True book series is this: much science literature for young children consists of information tidbits. The True Book series caters to the same age group but introduces children to a sustained narrative. I can't help but think this does them far more good than disconnected facts. Also, phonetic pronunciations for unfamiliar words are provided throughout.

My son and I had a great time with this book and I think your children will too, whether or not they've been through an earthquake before. ... Read more

First is the connection between fault and earthquake mechanics, including fault scaling laws, the nature of fault populations, and how these result from the processes of fault growth and interaction. Second is the central role of the rate-state friction laws in earthquake mechanics, which provide a unifying framework within which a wide range of faulting phenomena can be interpreted. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible of Faulting
Prof. Scholz of Columbia summarizes the science of rock mechanics.

This book is the easiest way to gain a first foothold in the physics of how faults behave. In fact, as far as I know, it may be the only way, short of attempting a PhD in geophysics.I've read it (and hope I remember at least a fraction of its contents), used it in class, and even given away a copy or two to students.

If only more scientists could write as well.As a side light, Chris has also written a book for the general reader on the excitement of discovering the tectonics of Africa, Fieldwork: A Geologist's Memoir of the Kalahari, which I highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Faultless book on faults?
Christopher Scholz has written a welcome update to the classic 1990 edition of his book, and if you thought that Crustal Deformation was a field where nothing exciting happens, think again!Substantial chunks of the book have been re-written and re-organized to bring the text bang up-to-date with the cutting edge of tectonics and rock mechanics research.
The beauty of this book is that Scholz, along with his students and research associates, basically has been the cutting edge of research in this field for the past 30 years. The book therefore reads as a guide to the evolution of ideas and a personal memoir of scientific exploration, while allowing the reader to follow the same thought processes, and more fully understand what we currently think regarding these subjects.
The text is a monograph, quite different from the usual condescending tone found in textbooks, and can be understood and appreciated by readers of widely differing abilities, from interested laymen to fellow researchers.Thorough explanations are given for each topic, with examples taken from actual scientific papers, putting the reader in touch with the original papers, a glaring omission in many other textbooks. The language is never more complicated than it needs to be, and Scholz's straight-forward explanations and no-nonsense style make comprehension almost too easy, leaving the reader a real feeling that one has learned something at the end, which will come as a breath of fresh air to any student that has suffered through a horribly dull and irrelevent lecture, only to remain scratching their head at the end.
The book is a tribute to the intellect and longeivity of the man's career, blessed as he is with a happy knack for being proven "right" by the passing of time, and continuing accumulation of research results.A classic text, and again, a must-read for anyone with a desire to know more about the planet we live on. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A good book from the American Adventure series.
This is the fourteenth book in The American Adventure series. This series tells about the lives of children from many generations of a fictional family throughout American history, from the settling of Plymouth by the Pilgrims through the end of World War II.

It's the fall of 1811 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Fourteen-year-old George Lankford is very excited about the New Orleans, the first steamship to travel on the Ohio River. He wants to build his own steam engine, perhaps to power a small boat, but his failed experiment only gets him in trouble with his parents, who forbid him to do any more experiments with steam. George decides to build a different kind of boat, with the help of another boy, Charles. George is hesitant to befriend Charles, because the other boy has terrible scars on his face after being burned as a young child. Although George doesn't judge Charles, some of the other boys at school do, and it makes him uncomfortable. And soon he has more worries, as a series of unexpected earthquakes shake Cincinnati.

This was a pretty good book from the American Adventure series. I was a little disappointed that the earthquakes didn't play more of a role in the story, however. Given the title of the book, I thought they'd be one of the main focuses, but the first one didn't show up until about halfway through the book. Still, I did enjoy this book, and would recommend it to other readers who enjoy the books in this series. ... Read more

Earthquakes and Geological Discover describes how and whv scientists trace seismic activirv and measure the extent and patterns of seismic waves. Through analvsis of numerous earthquakes, both historical a'nd present, eminent seismologist Bruce Bolt illustrates that basic geological lessons are learned in almost even, occurrence of these highly varied events. In addition, Bolt shows how seismographic data are used to mitigate the risk of future earthquakes by incorporating the latest theoretical models, technologies, and techniques (including manmade earthquakes). Bolt describes the three-pronged effort to predict the occurrence of earthquakes-the search for warning signs, the review of patterns of past occurrences, and the measurement of the strain on faults. fle concludes bv focusing on the crucial challenge of predicting the intensity of ground shaking, demonstrating how an understanding of seismic intensity leads to the construction of safer buildings and to other measures that reduce an earthquake's potential for destruction. ...
