Acclaim for Peggy Claude-Pierre's
The Secret Language of Eating Disorders

"Peggy Claude-Pierre has gone beyond the surface of eating disorders to discover their true causes and then present a valid and healing path. In this extremely constructive book, she offers incredible insights into the mind of the sufferer and the myths of eating disorders."      --Keith J. Karren, Ph.D.,
Department Chair, Health Sciences,
Brigham Young University

"Peggy Claude-Pierre is a warrior--ferocious and relentless--whose work has rescued a decade of sufferers."                        --Edward Feller, M.D., F.A.C.P.,
Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine,
Brown University School of Medicine

"Peggy Claude-Pierre has created a paradigm shift in the way we view and treat anorexia. Peggy has shifted the focus of care from that of controlling the symptoms of disordered eating to healing the negativity that would otherwise plague the individual for the rest of his or her life. I have developed the utmost respect for her, for I realize that she has translated the secret language of anorexia. Now it is up to us to use the knowledge she has revealed."
--Daniel J. Smith, M.D.

"Peggy Claude-Pierre's work begins where attachment to the limiting obstacles of theory end. She has brought back from the dead many young lives the world deemed hopeless. . . . There are many who possess the title of 'doctor' who have never come close to her incredible example of the selfless healer."
--Craig T. Pratt, M.D.,
Chief, Division of Addiction Medicine,
Grant-Riverside Methodist Hospital

1-0 out of 5 stars A Crock
This book misrepresents eating disorders and makes eating disorder sufferers almost seem psychotic. The author is very inexperienced with eating disorders and only has her word to back up her statements. She puts down eating disorder facts that have proven to be true. The one good thing about the book is how she encourages treating victims of eating disorders with love and compassion.I think her kindness is what drew her clients. She states that her way is the only way to help anorexics which ignores the fact that people are individuals. And she ignores the fact that other therapists besides her have had a high success rate. Some of her theories almost seem demonic or mystical.Almost like those with eating disorders are saints or psychics of some sort. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Didn't really apply to me
I didn't really relate to this book.I do eat emotionally, but this book didn't have alot of helpful advice for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life Altering!
This book is absolutely mind blowing! Every few pages I would have to just stop reading and take a few moments to collect myself. It was like Dr. Gould wrote the majority of this book with my personal story in mind. "You eat because you're torn between the self you've always been and the self you have an inkling you could become if you'd take a risk." My life in a nutshell. It was revelation after revelation.

Now, I'm a fast reader, but it took me almost 2 weeks to conquer this book, simply because it is so deep. I will be quite honest when I say that it made me quite uncomfortable at times, simply because it was so blunt and so on point. Everything Dr. Gould said makes sense. I can see how I have been using food as a way to sabotage myself and to try and suppress latent emotions. This is a HEAVY book. If you are not ready to clean those proverbial skeletons out of the closet, then you're not ready to read this book. But if you are prepared to take a long, hard, and open-minded look at your past, and silence your inner critic for good, I believe this book can make the difference. Align yourself mentally, and the physical aspect will "fall into place". It's been 6 weeks since I completed the book and I'm more confident and less dependent on food then ever before. This book has been liberating!

5-0 out of 5 stars Your search is over, this is the book you're looking for
If you've read your share of "diet books" and still haven't found the answer it's because you're looking in the wrong kind of book. This book IS the solution you're looking for. There is not a single recipe mentioned in the book.Instead this book goes to the deep rooted source of the problem and it's my guess that most every other book fails to address this. It's not easy to hear what this guy says but you know he's right.

A good analogy is that of someone who doesn't understand gravity and they lead their lives thinking that heavier things fall faster than lighter things (not true). Then one day someone teaches you about gravity and how it applies equally to all things and your understanding is forever changed.Same is true with this book. When you gain the knowledge and insight from this book you'll never go back to the way you were thinking. You'll understand why shame based, or boot camp type dieting programs fail in the long run because they don't address the root causesRead this book slowly and absorb it all. This book is incredible!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hits the Nail of the Head
I struggled for years with overweight and emotional eating. This book was my "eye opener" and probably saved my life.Dr. Gould addresses every angle of emotional eating and gets to the heart of the matter so that when you begin to understand the "why" of what you are doing, you are better able to take control of it.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who struggles with food for comfort. It's the best self-help book out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars He gets it.
Having struggled with this issue for more than 30 years, it's been incredible to read this book because it in so many ways it feels like he's writing from inside my head....analyzing my feelings and the ways I torment myself.I've no idea how many different books and programs and plans I've tried in an attempt to figure out a solution to this.Short term success occasionally, but always, always in the end whatever it was failed. This works, for me at least. And in reading the book it seems like Dr. Gould's has met a lot of people who are struggling with the very same thing I've struggled with alone and ashamed and feeling like a freak for so long.He gets it.His methods are firmly grounded in years of clinical research....he's not a quack trying to get rich quick on another diet scheme aimed at taking advantage of people who, like me, are desperate to find a way to end the struggle and deal with food like a normal person does.Good luck.I hope this is the answer for you as well. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking information! The tip of the iceberg
This is groundbreaking material and needs more recognition from the medical community. There is a definite link between ADD/ADHD and Eating Disorders, primarily as a form of self-medication (coping strategy) among women.

It is counterintuitive, but treating a woman who suffers from an ED (especially an ED that is not body-based, but control-based) with the correct ADD meds, such as stimulants, will calm the ED patient (woman) down enough to relax the rigidity, obsession, and/or impulsivity in relation to food.

I can only hope to see further research in this area.

5-0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal book
As cliche as this will sound, this book changed my life for the better. After suffering from an eating disorder for over six years and finding no way to cope or recover I began to research treatment options on my own.Having always had the feeling that I had ADD, I had previously been tested but not allowed medication for fear from my doctors that I might use medications to lose more weight.

With the knowledge I gained from this book (and recommending it to my psychiatrist), we were able to come up with a proper recovery plan which has led to my life now, free of an eating disorder.

Even if you don't necessarily have an eating disorder of ADD, this book is incredibly interesting and provides much insight into the link between eating disorders and ADD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Poeces of a Puzzle- The Link Between Eating Disorders and ADD
A wonderful, easy reading book that gives you all the important information you need if dealing with a child with ADD, an eating disorder, or both. The question and answer layout makes it easy to find information quickly. I highly recommend it.I have a child with ADD (inattentive type) and she dabbles with eating issues. Thanks for this fabulous book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Innovative Approach to the Treatment of Eating Disorders
Pieces of A Puzzle: The Link Between Eating Disorders and ADD has made a significant difference in my life. Dr. Dukarm is able to translate her knowledge and recommendations into a context that is easy to understand and apply. The content of this book is extremely beneficial, especially for those struggling with Bulimia or Binge Eating Disorder. After reading this book I contacted Dr. Dukarm, she was able to provide a consult. Her recommendations change my life for the better.

Product Description
Oxford Handbooks offer authoritative and up-to-date reviews of original research in a particular subject area. Specially commissioned chapters from leading figures in the discipline give critical examinations of the progress and direction of debates, as well as a foundation for future research. Oxford Handbooks provide scholars and graduate students with compelling new perspectives upon a wide range of subjects in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences.

A rich source of authoritative content that supports reading and study in the field, The Oxford Handbook of Eating Disorders reviews current research and clinical developments through synthetic chapters written by experts from various fields of study and clinical backgrounds. Epidemiologic studies suggest that eating disorders are not only common but have increased in prevalence in recent decades, and this handbook refines and updates the state of research. The book is divided into four sections: phenomenology and epidemiology of the eating disorders, approaches to understanding the disorders, assessment and comorbidities of the disorders, and prevention and treatment. The first section deals with classification and epidemiology of the disorders, considerations for revisions to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, and the somewhat neglected topic of eating disorders in childhood and early adolescence. The second section describes research basic to understanding the eating disorders and addresses biological factors, psychosocial risk factors, cultural factors, and the effects of behaviors such as dieting and eating and weight concerns in the genesis of the eating disorders. The third section describes assessment of the eating disorders, medical and psychological comorbidities, and medical management. The final section deals with various treatment modalities that have been found successful, including psychotherapeutic and psychopharmacologic approaches; an overview of evidence-based treatment for the eating disorders; and a consideration of what we know about cost-effectiveness of existing treatments.

The multiple perspectives and breadth of scope offered by The Oxford Handbook of Eating Disorders make it an invaluable resource for clinicians, researchers, and educators, as well as scholars and students. ... Read more

Product Description
The statistics are powerful and alarming: Perhaps as manyas 6 million Americans suffer from night eating syndrome, or NES—anewly identified eating disorder which describes behavior patterns inwhich an individual obsessively consumes more than half of his or herdaily caloric intake after eight o’clock in the evening. Moresignificant is the further finding that more than 33 percent ofmorbidly obese individuals—persons who are 100 or more poundsoverweight—are affected by this disorder.Experts agree that NESshares characteristic of not only eating disorders but also sleep andmood disorders. Sufferers tend to exhibit symptoms such as feelings ofanxiety and guilt, insomnia or interrupted sleep. Typical NESbehaviors include absent appetite during the day, a consistent patternof eating more food after dinner than during the meal itself, andrecurrent episodes of waking and eating throughout the night.Thisbook, the first written specifically to people struggling with NES,offers a step-by-step strategy for managing and overcoming thisdisorder.

Readers will first learn to identify the signs of NES, and then use journaling exercises to discover what automatic thoughts surround their night eating. 5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful and helpful
This book contained a lot of diverse information about overeating. It's been very helpful. Most books devoted to the problem of overeating and overweight have one or two main themes that are expanded to fill a whole book. This text contains many kinds of information, much of it quite practical.

4-0 out of 5 stars Night Eating Syndrome
I believe it goes along with most eating things - keeping a journal will aid in so many things.I think it is a great idea to figure out the "issue" and go from there.Syndrome covers a lot of area!I believe that this book is very informative and something one should definitely share with others.

5-0 out of 5 stars not alone
I have struggled with night eating for many years. When I would speak to my doctor about this he was very unaware of this type of eating. I am very pleased that this has been researched. I believe that most people were unaware that we were not the only ones eating at night. The book was a huge help to me.
Thank you,

4-0 out of 5 stars Simple Book About Understanding And Overcoming NES
****
This is a simple, but thorough book about Night Eating Syndrome, a quick read (only 167 pages), but full of information. It starts out with assistance in evaluating if you have NES...however, I think that this book would be helpful to anyone who overeats at night, whether or not they fit all of the criteria for NES.

It includes chapters on how to rule out other eating disorders and physical disorders, the biology and psychology behind night eating, hormonal involvement in night eating, types of night and eating and suggestions/plans for overcoming each. The interventions are pretty predictable, but still helpful, including journaling, imagery, relaxation, and other behavioral interventions.Support, medications, perseverance, and Internet resources are also discussed.

All in all I thought it was a fine, easy to understand book about a little-discussed disorder just now coming to public attention.

"Drawing from Within" is an introductory guide for those wanting to explore the use of art with clients with eating disorders. Art therapy is a particularly effective therapeutic intervention for this group, as it allows them to express uncomfortable thoughts and feelings through artistic media rather than having to explain them verbally. Lisa D. Hinz outlines the areas around which the therapist can design effective treatment programmes, covering family influences, body image, self-acceptance, problem solving and spirituality. Each area is discussed in a separate chapter and is accompanied by suggestions for exercises, with advice on materials to use and how to implement them. Case examples show how a therapy programme can be tailored to the individual client and photographs of client artwork illustrate the text throughout. Practical and accessible to practitioners at all levels of experience, this book gives new hope to therapists and other mental health professionals who want to explore the potential of using art with clients with eating disorders. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars structure the freedom!
this is a very thoughtfully organised and informative book. It covers important topics of the eating disorders in an developmental way: the past, present and future of the patient's history, as well as the developing stages of the therapy. It offers an introduction to each theme and suggests art directives (about 60 in total) as well as discusses possible themes that might appear in therapy. There is a clear emphasis on a specific structure- throughout the book chapters- which is also suggested in the process of therapy. I was a bit uncomfortable with the suggestion of using merely size A3 sheets of paper as it is not explained whether there is a reason to give specific size boundaries for the specific patients (apart from making a nice portfolio of the work at the end of therapy). The 28 figures in the book are very informative.I wish there were a few more. The bibliography is excellent.

Drawing from Within: Using Art to Treat Eating Disorders is a fine reference for practitioner who wish to explore the therapeutic use of art with clients with eating disorders. It's the hands-on application of theory to results which makes DRAWING FROM WITHIN so essential for any working with clients with eating disorders - and for college-level libraries strong in psychology. ... Product Description
Women’s Conflicts About Eating and Sexuality explores the strong relationships food and sex have represented to women over the years. No other book has spelled out so clearly the parallels between sex and eating nor integrated the relationship of these to women’s basic need to be loved.

Today’s dilemma for women--be fat or go hungry--and the endless variations and unsatisfying solutions to this problem have contributed to the incidence of anorexia, bulimia, and obesity. The pursuit of slimness, the obsession with having the perfect body, excessive aerobicizing, and diet books ad nauseam are all part of this phenomenon. Authors in Women’s Conflicts About Eating and Sexuality skillfully discuss the parallel between women’s obsession with sex and romance in the fifties and their obsession with food today. An important book for all women, it sheds light on the complex issues facing women and devotes special attention to the career woman and the additional pressures to be slim and stay slim.

The woman who reads this potentially life-changing book can examine, question, and change her behavior, using the specific step-by-step program aid included in the book. This book is for every woman who has ever worried about being too fat or too sexual. Women’s Conflicts About Eating and Sexuality will appeal to women of all ages--young women and their mothers will be fascinated by the parallels between sexual obsessions of thirty years ago and the eating obsessions of today.

This healing book will particularly attract single career women for whom sex and relationships are fraught with complications. Counselors and therapists will find this book an excellent resource in their work with helping women. It is also a good auxiliary text for courses in Women’s Studies focusing on psychology and history of women and the sociology of women and eating disorders. ... Read more

Product Description
This book is for the practitioner who is curious about how to incorporate therapy that draws on clients' spirituality or religious background as a resource for recovery from eating disorders. There is growing empirical evidence that spiritual approaches to treating clients with eating disorders are as effective, and sometimes more effective, than secular ones, particularly with religiously devout clients. In this book, the authors seek to be catalysts in building up the body of literature documenting the influence of client religiousness and spirituality on the development and maintenance of eating disorders, as well as recovery from eating disorders. Drawing on their many years of clinical experience, the authors show how a theistic perspective of healing and change can enrich therapies currently in practice for eating disorders, such as individual, group, and family therapy and twelve-step programs. They propose an agenda for future research including valuable information on measures and research designs that will help investigators study the etiology of eating disorders as well as treatment outcomes, as they relate to client involvement in institutional and community religious life and clients' private devotion or expressions of spirituality. ... A harrowing, yet inspiring, true story of one family's struggle to save their daughter Excerpts from the actual diaries of a mother and daughter take you inside their home, their family, and their minds to see how they react to, cope with, and ultimately win their battle over teen depression and eating disorders. Linda Rio, a psychologist and family therapist experiences her worst nightmare-as she's helping other families cope, she's unable to recognize or respond to her own daughter's dangerous eating disorder. Her daughter, Tara, overwhelmed by pressures at school, feels the disorder taking over her life but is unable to stop it. Eventually, she attempts suicide and is committed to a hospital. More than just a view inside this family's ordeal, The Anorexia Diaries offers help and hope to others dealing with this problem. Advice and commentary is included from Craig Johnson, Ph.D., who helps readers understand how to recognize and treat anorexia and bulimia in their own families. LINDA RIO is a licensed marriage and family therapist for more than 15 years in southern California. 1-0 out of 5 stars ABizarre, Horrible Book
Were they kidding? This kid developed anorexia because HER MOM WORKED?Well, she should slit her throat if she HAD A JOB.This book was difficult to get into.I felt that this kid was really spoiled if her mother was making her breakfast at the age of seventeen. Her mother seemed to do alot for her family and this child did not appear to be grateful for it at all. This book was undeveloped, and the reasons for the problem were not fully explored or explained.

1-0 out of 5 stars NOTHING TO DO WITH ANOREXIA FOR MORE THAN HALF OF THE BOOK!!
I'm a recovering anorexic who assumed this book would help me relate to the mother and daughter in this book. It was non discriptive, including not even telling how low Tara's weight got, her weeks in treatment, and didn't say how much she lost. They never said she got sick looking or anything related. The rest of the book was complete garbage about how she is doing at home and at school. O yeah, her mother is so naive to even pay attention to how her health was going. " Tara looks kindof blank and sad", says her mother. WELL DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT IF YOU'RE A PSCHYATRIST AND HELP HER!!! don't waste you're time and money on this book. it's just not worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars True story, Real insight. Good Theories.
I thought this mother/daughter story was very accurate and sincere. How wonderful that they kept such a telling record of thier struggles for others to read. Many other reviewers have said that this is too "easy, boring, and worhtless", I think those may be the readers who are reading eating disorder books to feed thier own eating issues...like "Wasted", which many have called a handbook for how to have an eating disorder. I think this story is not as graphic as some, but it is a true account of a mother and daughter and thier struggles with a deadly disease. Also, the commentary by Dr. Craig Johnson was very interesting to read. He is very well known in this field, and he covers many issues in a very easy-to-understand way in this book.
Remember, not all eating disorder books are going to be as graphic as books such as "Wasted", but then again, not all eating disorders are that graphic either.

2-0 out of 5 stars Superficial and simple
Without trivializing the sufferings of the Rio family, I honestly feel like this book offers no insight to the complexity of anorexia nervosa.Tara's eating disorder - which was not anorexia at all, but bulimorexia - was a relatively short ordeal, and she did not hide it from her family like many sick young women do (or like the excerpt from the back of the book would have the prospective reader believe she did).Introspection is nihil - rarely expressed is sentiment deeper than "I feel fat".Moreover, the overall tone is self-centered, as the authors never speculate upon the epidemic nature of the disease; I call this sort of self-congratulatory, non-academic memoir "victimization literature."For these reasons and more, I cannot recommend this title as a quality account of an eating disorder.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Insightful-A Raw Look at Real Life
I found this book to be refreshingly real and raw. Beyond the scope of eating disorders it addressed everyday issues I think many teen girls are battling with. As a woman in my mid-twenties, I related to much of Tara's thoughts while also gaining a sense of empathy for the struggles I put my own mother through.

I think every woman will relate to at least some aspect of the Rio's story. As a recovered bulimic, I've read MANY books about eating disorders. However, few have touched me the way this one has. I'm tired of reading books from a clinical point of view. This one read like a soap opera and kept my interest to the very end. ... Read more

Product Description
The Overcoming Eating Disorders, Second Edition program addresses the cognitive-behavioral treatment of Bulimia Nervosa and Binge Eating Disorder. CBT has been proven the most effective treatment for helping patients improve their eating habits and overcome their disorder.

The treatment described is divided into three overlapping phases: behavior change, identifying binge triggers, and relapse prevention. The main focus of the program is the normalization of eating. Patients use self-monitoring forms to track their eating habits on a daily basis while they work toward establishing a pattern of 3 meals and 2 snacks per day eaten at regular intervals. Once a regular pattern of eating has been established, patients move on to recognizing and eliminating their triggers for binging and purging. CBT techniques like problem-solving and cognitive restructuring help patients deal with negative mood states, faulty interpersonal interactions, and errors in thinking. The final phase of treatment consists of a review of the positive changes that have occurred during treatment, as well as a discussion of any residual problems and ways to handle setbacks or lapses. Homework exercises are assigned at each session and play an important role in keeping patients motivated throughout the duration of treatment.

This newly revised and updated Therapist Guide includes expanded information regarding weight and shape concerns and an entirely new chapter on adapting the treatment for use as a time-limited, therapist-assisted self-help program.Complete with step-by-step instructions for delivering the treatment, this guide is an indispensable resource that no clinician can do without.

Product Description
Clinical Manual of Eating Disorders provides sound therapeutic advice based on current research and clinical practice. It extensively expands on approaches for well-known disorders such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa covered by the third edition of the American Psychiatric Association's "Practice Guideline for the Treatment of Patients With Eating Disorders." It also covers strategies for night eating and related syndromes, obesity and weight management in relation to psychiatric medications, psychiatric aspects of bariatric surgery, and management of patients with chronic, intractable eating disorders.

Ranging widely from determining initial treatment approaches to addressing problems posed by unique groups of patients, this book focuses squarely on what psychiatrists need to know about the clinical assessment and management of patients with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder, and obesity. Its insights will enable clinicians to better make nuanced assessments of patients with these conditions, present the best available evidence about treatment options to patients and their families, and initiate and conduct treatment interventions with the majority of patients they encounter. Clinical vignettes illustrate specific techniques and strategies to help anchor the discussions in the decision-making situations commonly faced by practitioners. ... Read more
