From the supplier: Child research suggests that children value their natural environments. Among other things, contact with nature allows children to develop a sense of rootedness, test reality through active involvements and acquire a sense of one's environmental heritage. Parents can help foster aesthetic learning in their children by respecting the latter's private spaces, involving them in the planning of family outings, encouraging them to develop geographic skills, and participating in their school beautification and ecological projects.

From the author: This essay elaborates a view of argument based in the metaphor of ecology. It promotes a revised pattern of argumentative inquiry in which ecologies of argument are described and evaluated. To make the case for such a study, the essay explores the perspective on argument promoted by the metaphor of ecology, then makes two applications: to the definition and evaluation of argument in a democracy, and to the just war doctrine. Key Words: argumentative ecology, communities of argument, public sphere, democratic argument, just war doctrine

Product Description
This volume of essays represents 15 years of Chet Bowers's reflections on the culture of modernism. Bowers discusses shortcomings in the ideas of Paulo Freire, Richard Rorty and others who have formed the basis for our modern approach to thought and pedagogy. Arguing that we have been addressing local crises in education, all the while missing a global crisis, Bowers identifies the ecological imperative and how it impacts on our lives. His book is divided into three sections: "Rethinking the Foundations of Modernism", "Cultural Mediating Characteristics of Educational Computing", and "Recovering the Ecological Imperative in Educational and Social Thought".In each section, Bowers introduces a number of themes that are not part of our current conversation about ecologically sustainable cultures, including: how the metaphors of emancipation reproduce a culturally specific set of values; the culturally specific form of individualism and rationality reinforced by Freire's pedagogy; how educational computing reinforces the Cartesian mindset and contributes to uses of language that reinforce an anthropocentric approach to moral values; the anthropocentric foundations of educational liberalism; the connections between addressing challenges of cultural diversity and the ecological crisis; and what urban teachers can learn from traditional civilisations about the nature of an ecologically sustainable culture. The scope and endurance of Bowers's arguments make this book appropriate for graduate courses in foundations, the philosophy of education, teacher education, curriculum theory, educational policy and environmental education. ... From the supplier: Montana State University is gaining benefits from its computer program that facilitates the use of honey bees as environmental monitors. Because bees typically gather measurable amounts of nectar, pollen, water and dust in their daily forages, they also collect the pollutants which are borne by those substances. Funding from the Environmental Protection Agency has enabled the university to develop a suite of computer-based tools to automate the following procedures: sampling and analysis of bees, pollen, wax and honey for evaluation of pollutants; mapping pollutant distribution; measurement of bee's response to contaminants; analysis of bee population dynamics and ranking of pollution sites as a factor of toxicity to bees. These tools include BEEPOP to measure population dynamics of colonies, and BEETOX, which provides comparison data of over 500 toxic chemicals. The programs run on a microcomputer with a hard drive, 640k of RAM and DOS 3.0 or higher.
