Product Description
PREFACE. THE present Bibliographical Index owes its origin to the fact that in 1874, when the writer returned from Europe where he had spent a couple of years in the study of mycology, he found it impossible to ascertain what species of fungi were known to occur in the United States. With the exception of the two monographs of Schweinitz, issued in 1822 and 1834, the accounts of North American fungi were scattered through numerous papers in the publications of learned societies, many of them difficult to obtain, in various State reports and in horticultural and agricultural journals. Berkeley and Curtis Notices of North American Fungi, begun in Grevillea in 1872, were then in progress of publication, but the student who desired to find out what was known of our fungi was forced to spend a large amount of time in hunting up in the larger libraries the many scattered and often obscure works from which information could be obtained. The writer then determined to bring together all references to North American species in the form of a card catalogue, not an easy matter at that date. At the same time an authors catalogue was started including the titles of all the works used in forming the catalogue of species. The authors catalogue was printed in 1887 as Bibliographical Contribution No. 25 of the Library of Harvard University under the title, A List of Works on North American Fungi, by W. G. Farlow and William Trelease. This included 653 titles, and was followed in 1888 by a Supplemental List, by W. G. Farlow, being Bibliographical Contribution No. 31, bringing up the number of titles to 756. The authors catalogue has been continued and a new edition is in preparation, including the parts previously issued with additions up to 1905. As originally planned the Index included as species of North American fungi all those known north of Mexico, but in recent years the species of our southern border have proved to be so intimately connected with those of the West Indies, Mexico and Central iii onoAQfl IV America that it seemed necessary to extend the limit of the Index to species of all countries north of the Isthmus of Panama. In the following pages where a species has been recorded only in countries south of the United States, the name of the region where it occurs is given on the right hand side of the page, but where a species occurs both in the United States and regions farther south no special indi- cation is given. Had it been possible, it would have been desirable to include also species of the northern part of South America, but the line had to be drawn somewhere, and to include South Ameri- can species would have required an additional amount of work hardly warranted under the circumstances. As it is, we have given all the references known to us to West Indian and Central American species published in recent years, and, to the best of our ability, we have inserted the species recorded from those regions in works issued prior to 1888, but not included in the List of 1887 and the Supplementary List of 1888... ... Product Description

The European eel Anguilla anguilla is a common fish species in West European countries supporting several thousands of small-scale fisheries. In June 2007, it has been listed in Annex B of CITES after the 99% decline in recruitment observed over the last decades. A European Council Regulation was issued on September 2007 to arrest the collapse of the eel stock. In this book, we discuss the factors that may contribute to the collapse of the European eel population. With respect to conservation measures two important aspects have to be considered: quality and quantity of escaping silver eels. Clearly, a poor condition of the silver eels can never be compensated by large numbers. Qualitative parameters were thus far hardly available for management applications. The main goal of this book is to provide useful quality parameters for migrating silver eels, indicating their contribution to recruitment. The process of migration and maturation also provides information about the natural conditions for eel reproduction. Therefore, this book will also be very useful for eel aquaculture; it may provide tools for reproduction as well as for suppression of precocious maturation. An integrative approach regarding eel maturation requires a combination of ecology and physiology. In this book we included both aspects, and we hope that this will contribute to the restoration of the European eel population.

Description:
This study compared fullframe fisheye photography and cover photography with destructive leaf area index (L) estimation and the Licor LAI-2000 plant canopy analyser (PCA) in plantations of the vertical leaved species Eucalyptus globulus. Fullframe fisheye photography differs from circular fisheye photography in that the images have reduced field of view such that the zenithal range of 0-90^o extends to the corners of the rectangular image, roughly doubling image resolution compared to circular images. Cover images instead are obtained by pointing a 70mm equivalent focal length lens (in 35mm format) straight upwards. Measurements of cover and indirect estimates of plant area index (L"t) were made in 12 stands of 6-8 years old Eucalyptus globulus. L was measured using destructive sampling and allometry in nine of these stands and ranged from 2.5 to 6.6. Both foliage cover and L"t from the PCA were well correlated with L from allometry, but fullframe fisheye photography provided poor estimates of L despite corrections for foliage clumping. Sampling location had a significant effect on estimates of crown porosity, crown cover and zenithal clumping index from cover photography. The zenithal extinction coefficient (k), calculated from L, crown porosity and cover, ranged from 0.14 to 0.25 and appeared to decrease as L increased; hence, we were unable to obtain an unambiguous estimate of k for E. globulus stands. Nonetheless, the study showed that L can be estimated from foliage cover with similar certainty to that of the PCA. We conclude that the greatest challenge facing indirect estimation of L in forests using photographic methods is to separate the effects of foliage angle from those of foliage clumping. ... Product Description
Current environmental catastrophes and concerns have been accompanied by an explosion of information about the environment. The concerned citizen, whether a business professional, student, homemaker, government employee, educator, or union member, needs access to this information, but may feel overwhelmed by the bewildering array of material available. This annotated bibliography guides readers through the vast amount of information about the environment currently available. It answers questions about usefulness, subject matter and approach of environmental literature. More than 800 entries on books and popular magazine articles found in most public libraries list standard bibliographic information and its scope, organisation and bias. Notations mention whether tables, figures, graphs, glossaries, reference lists or summaries are particularly noteworthy. The overall scientific level of the work is also addressed. Focus is on timely and informative books and articles that are readily available and understandable to the general public.Subjects covered include overpopulation, air pollution, acid rain, ozone depletion, global warming, the greenhouse effect, water pollution, toxic waste, energy and resource depletion, pesticides, food additives and other chemicals, land mismanagement, noise pollution, visual pollution, pollution of outer space and health problems in the environment, as well as practical suggestions for improving the environment. ... Description:
Volume equations for commercial teakwood, site index curves and provisional empirical yield tables were developed and presented for teak (Tectona grandis L.f.) at Bosque Puerto Carrillo S.A. plantations in Guanacaste, northwestern Costa Rica. These plantations were established in 1986 and are the first serious teak plantation projects under rational and intensive silvicultural management in Central America. Height curves for three site indices: 23, 21 and 19m at a reference age of 10 years were built. Yield tables proposed for an average thinning regime correspond to the three site indices defined. The silvicultural model has been developed using data from the yearly inventories of Bosque Puerto Carrillo. Hence, the obtained silvicultural model should be validated and adjusted, if necessary, at the end of the first rotation. ... Read more

Product Description
The 2006 Southeast Asian haze event was caused by continued uncontrolled burning from "slash and burn" cultivation in Indonesia, and affected several countries in the Southeast Asian region and beyond, such as Malaysia, Singapore, southern Thailand, and as far as Saipan; the effects of the haze may have spread to South Korea. Local sources of pollution partly contributed to the increased toxicity, particularly in high-pollution areas such as ports, oil refineries, and dense urban areas. In the highly urbanised and industrialised Klang Valley of Malaysia in particular, the surrounding terrain acted as a natural retainer of polluted air, aggravating the situation when the haze set in. There is a link to El Niño as well. The haze was made worse than during previous occurrences by the El Niño-Southern Oscillation which delayed the year's monsoon season. Fires in Kalimantan produce great amounts of smoke, burn a long time and are difficult to extinguish because they are on peatland, and once lit the fires can burn for months and release gases that produce sulfuric acid. ... Description:
We used stem-analysis data from 60 to 100 years-old second-growth stands, and single-point observations in 260-460 years-old trees, to study and model height development of Nothofagus obliqua (''roble''). The data covers a much wider range of ages than previous work on this species. A stochastic differential equation approach facilitated the estimation and comparison of alternative model variants based on the Richards equation. A number of methodological issues in the application of stem-analysis techniques were examined. It was found that breast-height-age can improve the reliability of site quality assessment and growth projections, compared to the total or stump age currently used. Best results were obtained with a polymorphic model fitted to the stem-analysis observations, conditioning the asymptote to be compatible with the old-growth tree measurements. ... Read more

In three different experiments, the influence ofvarious concentrations of zinc, copper and crudeoil on productivity andspecies composition inalgal periphytoncommunities was investigatedusing indoor artificial streams. The effects ofzinc, copper and crude oil on communityproductivity were assessed by measuring biomass,ash-free dry mass (AFDM), chlorophyll-a, speciescomposition, relative abundance, biovolume andbioconcentration factor. Generally in artificialstreams with zinc, copper and crude oil there was asignificant (p<0.05) reduction of chlorophyll-a,dry mass and AFDM. Species diversity and relativeabundance of periphyton species changed drasticallyunder the influence of zinc, copper and crude oil. In another study, concurrent evaluations of waterquality in the River Gharasou have been carried outusing species composition and several aspects ofprimary productivity. Five sites along RiverGharasou were sampled monthly from April toSeptember. Results obtained from this part of thestudy resulted in development of a Trophic DiatomIndex for the River Gharasou. ...
