Product Description

The increasing use of input-output analysis (IOA) in Industrial Ecology (IE) for life-cycle assessment (LCA), material flow analysis (MFA), and life-cycle costing (LCC) calls for a self-contained book on IOA that can meet the needs of practitioners without compromising on basic concepts and latest developments. “Waste Input-Output Analysis” addresses these needs.

The standard IOA has the weakness that it does not consider the physical flows of waste and the activity of waste management. To cope with this problem, the authors have developed the Waste Input-Output model (WIO) which addresses these issues explicitly.

Product Description

This volume provides a synthesis of long-term ecological analyses in the Bornhöved Lake District as a representative landscape of northern Germany. The emphasis is on the comprehensive assessment of matter and energy fluxes in and between the terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems and their biocoenotic structures and dynamics on the one hand, and on transdisciplinary landscape planning approaches on the other. In each respect the development of novel hierarchical modelling approaches at various spatial and temporal scales is fundamental to the understanding of the structure and function of systems and to integrative resource management strategies. Thus, the book is not only commendable for ecologists, but is equally useful for botanists, zoologists, geographers, landscape planners, soil scientists, agronomers, hydrologists, climatologists and other scientists interested in energy balances or the quality and quantity of waterflows and nutrient cycles, and managers looking for relevant case studies and model answers to their questions.

Product Description
This text is based on original research carried out during 13 months fieldwork in Jamaica. The first key theme is an examination of the damage to the social environment and ecology of the island, which has resulted from IMF/World Bank prescribed structural adjustment policies. The second is the identification of a social movement in Jamaica of community environmental groups, some based in ultra-poor squatter communities. The study presents data and case studies which are characteristic of many "third world" countries, and links Jamaica's heavy external indebtedness to its deteriorating social environment and ecology. ... Product Description
The number of hazardous waste sites across the United States has grown to approximately 217,000, with billions of cubic yards of soil, sediment, and groundwater plumes requiring remediation. Sites contaminated with recalcitrant contaminants or with complex hydrogeological features have proved to be a significant challenge to cleanup on every level - technologically, financially, legally, and sociopolitically. Like many federal agencies, the Navy is a responsible party with a large liability in hazardous waste sites. "Environmental Cleanup at Navy Facilitites" applies the concepts of adaptive management to complex, high-risk hazardous waste sites that are typical of the military, EPA, and other responsible parties. The report suggests ways to make forward progress at sites with recalcitrant contamination that have stalled prior to meeting cleanup goals. This encompasses more rigorous data collection and analysis, consideration of alternative treatment technologies, and comprehensive long-term stewardship. ... Read more

Product Description

Published in 1998, Global Greens narrates the story of international environmental groups in world affairs. It examines how nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) work with the United Nations and other international organizations to promote environmentalist policies and treaties. To understand many of the current foreign policy controversies it is increasingly important to know how international environmental groups are involved.

Global Greens describes in detail NGO activity at some of the most significant UN environmental conferences through the end of the 20th century, including the global warming conference in Kyoto, Japan. Most of the story is serious, but some of it amuses. Inside the Kyoto conference hall, four men disguised as world leaders play soccer with a large inflatable balloon of the planet, activists blanketed the building with propaganda leaflets, and a group of grim-faced individuals stand solemnly around three ice carvings of penguins begging the little creatures to forgive mankind for permitting the global warming that causes them to melt.

As recent news developments have confirmed, environmental groups have been accomplishing–and continue to accomplish–their objectives gradually and under a cloak of secrecy. Few Americans know that nonprofit organizations, staffed by professionals, primarily Americans, and financed by a mix of private and public funds, exercise real power in the conduct of diplomacy and the creation of international policy. A global environmental movement is using international agencies to undermine national self-government, economic freedom, and personal liberty.  Global Greens exposes the behind-the-scenes efforts of this well-funded and ideologically driven force.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Global Greens" is a well-documented green movement expose.
In 1990, Capital Research Center published one of the first analyses of the environmental movement's political agenda and funding sources -- "Protecting the Evnironment: Old Rhetoric, New Imperatives," byJo Kwong Echard. The Center has, since 1984, specialized in such research. Its periodic "Studies in Organizational Trends" are valuableresources.

Now Capital builds on this exemplary foundation with therelease of James M. Sheehan's "Global Greens: Inside the InternationalEnvironmental Establishment."Sheehan -- who directs internationalpolicy at Competitive Enterprise Institute -- gathers uder one roof, so tospeak, pertinent facts about the political and monetary relationshipbetween the UN and international environmental groups. His documentationis so devastating that even black helicopter critics will be forced toachknowledge the threat to American sovereignty is real.

"GlobalGreens" begins with an analysis of how environmental groups havetransformed into unelected, UN-accredited "representatives of thepublic" -- non-governmental organizations (NGOs).Theseself-appointed, quasi-governmental groups participate at every level oftreaty and international law negotiations. The list of issues that fallunder their purview is extensive -- global warming, international trade, fishing, biotechnology, population control, food security, forestry, andthe world bank.Environmental NGOs have tied these issues together underthe sustainable development aegis -- the old socialist imperative ofcontrolled economic development and wealth redistribution repackaged innew, post cold war rhetoric."Global Greens" documents theevents that have propelled this agenda forward.

Sheehan insists that,"if the battle over environment is the equivalent of yesterday's ColdWar, then environmental pressure groups...must support and promote theactions international agencies take to intervene in markets and regulateprivate decision-making around the world."The only way this agendacan succeed, however, is with American tax dollars.According to Sheehan, green organizations "need increased appropriations for agencies likethe World Bank, the Global Environmental Facility, and the U.S. Agency forInternational Development. Most of all, they need to strengthen the UnitedNations system on whose behalf they...urge Congress to make full payment ofback 'dues.'"In short, "Global Greens have put their faith inthe 'process.'They have achieved success even when their ideas have beendiscredited. What's needed now," Sheehan concludes, "is thevigilance to detect their maneuverings and the skill to overcomethem."

This strategy requires a well-informed public andlegislature."Global Greens" -- a scant 200 pages -- is theperfect resource to put in the hands of anyone who needs to get "up tospeed" on the issue -- especially newly elected local, state andfederal officials. ... Read more

Product Description
Evaluates the carcinogenic risks to humans posed by exposure to crystalline and amorphous silica, some silicates (palygorskite, sepiolite, wollastonite, and zeolites other than erionite), coal dust, and para-aramid fibrils. The volume opens with a discussion of the many complexities involved in assessing the cancer risks associated with occupational exposure to inhaled mineral dusts, and the special toxicological considerations required when evaluating the results of experimental studies. Against this background, the first and most extensive monograph evaluates human and animal carcinogenicity data on silica, concentrating on evidence of an increased risk for lung cancer. On the basis of this evaluation, crystalline silica inhaled in the form of quartz or cristobalite from occupational sources was classified as carcinogenic to humans. For amorphous silica, evidence from both epidemiological and experimental studies was judged inadequate, and amorphous silica could not be classified.
For palygorskite, the evaluation found sufficient evidence from studies in rats that long fibres were carcinogenic; studies of exposure to short fibres showed no significant increase in the incidence of tumours. The few studies in humans were judged inadequate. Long palygorskite fibres were classified as possibly carcinogenic to humans. Short fibres could not be classified.
For coal dust, several limitations in human studies, largely concerned with excessive mortality from lung and stomach cancer, hindered interpretation of the epidemiological literature. The few adequate experimental studies showed no increase in tumours. Coal dust therefore could not be classified. para-Aramid fibrils likewise could not be classifed in view of inadequates in both the epidemiological and experimental data. ... Read more
