Product Description

Analyzing the political culture of the Andean republics of Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador and of the United States, Fredrick Pike finds in their relationships deep divergencies in values and goals. Andeans, he shows, have traditionally viewed with suspicion the tenets associated with liberal democracy, secularism, and individualistic capitalism. In a detailed study of Andean politics, economics, social classes, and cultural patterns in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Pike determines that revolutionary ideology often merely masked the ambitions of aspiring elites anxious to retain the traditional order but wishing to wrest its advantages from incumbent elites. He shows the appeal of Marxism and of recent external-domination, internal-dependency theories, as well as the basic conservatism of land-reform programs and approaches to the "Indian problem."

Pike also speculates on whether an "iron law of dependency" is involved in Andean relations with the United States. He discusses the role of multinational corporations and the increasing "privatization of dependency." In the emerging postmodern era, Pike suggests, the values of Western-style modernity are even less viable in Andean America and indeed may not be able to survive in the United States.

Product Description
Erdkunde . Product Description
The societies of Latin America have placed great weight on nation building, yet each one is torn between the global and the local.Affiliation to one's own nation is cross-cut by other bonds with communities and places; increasingly each individual, each family and each nation in this region is feeling the effects of globalization.

ReMaking the Nation presents new ways of thinking about the nation, nationalism and national identities.Drawing links between popular culture and indigenous movements, issues of race and gender, and ideologies of national identity, the authors draw on their extensive work in Latin America to illustrate their rethinking of the politics of nationalism. This engaging exploration of contemporary politics in a post new-world-order uncovers a map of future political organization, a world of pluri-nations in the ever-changing struggle for democracy. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Background and account of the French Academy expeditions
The French Academy of Sciences sent out survey expeditions to Peru and Lapland in 1735/36 to determine the shape of the earth. This book conveys some of the charm of this amusing and interesting episode in the history of science. Now, to determine the shape of the earth by measurements one would of course have to measure the north-south distance between two latitudes. Straightforward measurement is not feasible. One instead triangulates a large area, measures all the angles, and measures one side. This one length then propagates through the grid by elementary trigonometry. Smith focuses the entire book on this perspective, describing the history of trigonometry and measuring instruments and so on. More theoretical treatments of the shape of the earth are treated poorly, if at all. For instance, Newton's important determination of the shape of the earth in the Principia is too hastily summarised, claiming for example that Newton "was able to demonstrate" that the earth must be spheroidal (p. 79), even though there is no such proof in the Principia or elsewhere (cf. prop. XIX-XX, book III, of the Principia). ... Read more

Product Description
Atmospheric nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) depositions are expected to increase in the tropics as a consequence of increasing human activities in the next decades. Furthermore, a possible shortened El Niño Southern Oscillation cycle might come along with more frequent calcium (Ca) depositions on the eastern slope of the Ecuadorian Andes originating from Saharan dust. It is crucial to understand the response of the old-growth montane forest in Ecuador to increased nutrient deposition to predict the further development of this megadiverse ecosystem. This book describes the effect of experimental additions of N, P, N+P and Ca to the forest and an untreated control. The N, P and Ca concentrations and fluxes of litter leachate, mineral soil solution, throughfall and fine litterfall samples were determined. The results suggest that N, P and Ca co-limit the forest ecosystem functioning in the northern Andean montane forests. ... Read more

Product Description

Prior to 1735, South America was largely terra incognita to many Europeans. But that year, the Paris Academy of Sciences sent a joint French and Spanish mission to the Spanish American province of Quito (in present-day Ecuador) to study the curvature of the Earth at the Equator—an expedition that would put South America on the map and in the minds of Europeans for centuries to come. Equipped with quadrants and telescopes, the mission’s participants  referred to the transfer of scientific knowledge from Europe to the Andes as a “sacred fire” passing mysteriously through European astronomical instruments to curious observers in South America.
By looking at the social and material traces of this expedition, Measuring the New World examines the transatlantic flow of knowledge in reverse—from West to East. Through ephemeral monuments and geographical maps, from the Andes to the Amazon River, the book explores how the social and cultural worlds of South America contributed to the production of European scientific knowledge during the Enlightenment. Neil Safier uses the notebooks of traveling philosophers, including Charles-Marie de La Condamine and others, as well as maps and specimens from the expedition, to place this particular scientific endeavor in the larger context of early modern print culture and the emerging intellectual category of scientist as author.

Product Description

In October of 2007, scientists from Ecuador, Peru, and the United States conducted a rapid inventory of the Reserva de Producción Faunística Cuyabeno in northeastern Ecuador and the adjacent Zona Reservada Güeppí in northern Peru. Working closely with members of local indigenous and mestizo communities, the teams surveyed the soils and hydrology, vegetation, animals, and human communities within these regions. Full results from the investigation of these spectacularly diverse forest landscapes—including biological discoveries, threats, and management recommendations—are given here in both Spanish and English, with executive summaries in Cofan, Secoya, and Kichwa, three languages indigenous to the region.

Description:
The Cuyabeno Wildlife Production Reserve (Cuyabeno Reserve), located in the northeastern Ecuadorian Amazon, is a special protected area. Using a satellite image time-series, landscape ecology and evolving boundary definitions, shifts in landscape composition are described that focus on the spatial and temporal dynamics of land use and cover change (LUCC) within the vicinity of the Cuyabeno Reserve. Changes in local land tenancy and the implementation of protection buffers have accelerated the process of fragmentation and exacerbated the conflict between development and protection. Further, variations in management strategies and ownership histories confound LUCC patterns, rates, and trajectories. ... Read more

Product Description
This work is the first in-depth study of the climate in the Andes of South Ecuador and North Peru. The data sets used are from own measurements, from the national weather stations and NCEP Reanalysis data. A particular feature of this work is the innovative graphical methods of presenting both measured and model data. The Andes of South Ecuador pose a significant, perpendicular barrier to a quasi-permanent easterly mid-level jet stream. Nearly incessant orographic uplift and interception of moisture at the eastern slopes makes the highest ridge of the Andes, the Cordillera Real, a true climate divide that separates (per)humid climates from arid and semiarid climates. The outstanding topographic and climate setup produces a row of surprising weather extremes. Wind speed reaches mean monthly values of up to 15 m/s, mean daily speed of up to 24 m/s and gusts have reached >28 m/s (10 Bft). Advective and wind-enhanced rainfall amounts to >6,000 mm/y in the summit regions. Within 30 km, in the rain shadow, these totals are contrasted by barely 300 mm/y. Very clear skies, cloud radiative effects and the high sun position boost global irradiance to absolute magnitudes of over 1800 W/m2! ... Read more
