Product Description
This book presents the utilisation of a PEM fuel cell as a main power source in a distributed generation system, particularly for future electric vehicle applications. The fuel cell, known as a high specific energy source at the present time, is one of the well-known alternative sources of electric power generation when given consideration for decreasing oil consumption and hazardous CO2 emissions. Nevertheless, one of the main weak points of the fuel cell is its time constants dominated by temperature and fuel delivery system (pumps, valves, and in some cases, a hydrogen reformer). As a result, fast load demand will cause a high voltage drop in a short time, recognised as a fuel starvation phenomenon. One must limit the fuel cell current (or power) slope to prevent fuel starvation problems, to improve its performance and lifetime. Therefore, to employ a PEM fuel cell in dynamic applications, the electrical system must have at least an auxiliary power source to improve system performance when electrical loads at a DC bus demand high energy in a short time, as well. The possibilities to use a supercapacitor or battery bank as an auxiliary source with a fuel cell main source is presented in detail. The very fast power response and high specific power of a supercapacitor or high specific energy of battery can complement the slower power output of the main source to produce the compatibility and performance characteristics needed in a load. ... Product Description
With ever increasing concern on environmental protection and energy conservation, there is a fast growing interest in electric vehicles (EVs) from automakers, governments and customers. As electric propulsion is the core of EVs, there is a pressing need for researchers to develop advanced electric motor drives for various classes of EVs, including the battery, hybrid and fuel cell vehicles. Such issues are addressed in this book. The development and use of a fuel cell based power system for propulsion of electric aircrafts is discussed. A study done on the flight mechanics of the new aircraft, to verify the new flight performance, is also examined. Electric powered two-wheelers have risen in popularity in China over the past several years. This book investigates the growth of these electric two-wheelers in China and compares their environmental and safety impacts to those of alternative modes of transportation. Futhermore, the design and implementation of a hardware-in-the-loop system for the development, verification, and validation of algorithms used to construct state estimators for batteries and supercapacitors is addressed. There are several different kinds of devices that can be used to achieve electrochemical energy conversion. Some of these conversion technologies are reviewed, as well as their impact on the environment. The method used to control a power-train of a hybrid electric vehicle is discussed as well as how both the engine and the electric machine may achieve respective higher efficiencies after using this method. The regulated and unregulated emissions of diesel engines operating on different sulfur content fuels are also looked at. Energy efficiency issues include research and development priorities, funding for climate-related efficiency programs, implementation of equipment efficiency standards, regulation of vehicle fuel efficiency, and electricity industry ratemaking for energy efficiency profitability. Such issues are addressed in this book. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars What a joke!
I purchased this book with the thought that it actually might be able to provide some useful information. This book is VERY poorly written - it appears that it was hardly editted, has many grammatical and spelling errors and is WAY too basic. This might be a good book for our 5th grader to learn about Electric Vehicles, but certainly not a book that will provide any useful information to adults. The font size is very large seemingly to fill up space, and it appears this book was simply written for the ignorant who accidentally purchase it thinking there may be some useful information in it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst book ever.
I expected this book to have anything in it helpful in the process of converting a gas car to electric. The level of discourse in this book was an insult. Apparently, whomever Dr. Y EV is, he has never heard of an editor: the book is riddled with typos and grammatical errors. Basically this book says: there are cars, there are electric motors and other parts, and these can be put together to make an EV, now go find a real book to tell you how to do it. About ten pages are dedicated to the actual parts that go into a conversion, the beginning being a simplistic discussion of alternative forms of energy, and the second half (entirely half the book!!!) was a glossary of terms that have virtually nothing to do with this subject except that things in our world are, for instance, made out of carbon. This glossary section contains definitions of organic compounds and other advanced scientific stuff that have nothing to do with the task of conversion, and also break the trend towards writing a book for first-graders. ("Hmm, my book is kinda short, I'll just cut-and-paste from this o-chem book...") The only redemptive portion of the book is about 15 pages of links to EV related sites, which for a couple hours in the internet you can find on your own. Who is this Dr. Y EV anyway, and why does he use a pen name? A search for him on the internet turns up nothing and there is no contact info in the book, very sketchy.

1-0 out of 5 stars A waste of money
A waste of money, very general book that could of been written by a teenager. Big letters, lines double spaced, a glossary that makes up half of the book. In fact no interesting material on how to convert. Readers should be aware, as well the author is anonymous.

1-0 out of 5 stars Comparable to a high school book report.
The book was poorly written and had numerous grammatical errors. There were no diagrams or photos and read like a high school book report from a C-grade student. The book primarily consisted of definitions and web site addresses with very brief descriptions of the steps involved in the EV conversion process. My guess would be that the author has no first hand EV conversion experience and probably borrowed most the content from other books/articles.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great informative book for the layperson. Worth every penny!
Beware of the competition and "short-sighted" motives in exagerating the negative. This book was never intended for the expert in conversion but written with the layperson in mind. Somebody without specialist knowledge, somebody who is not trained or expert in the specific conversion area will appreciate the valuablee information it contains. The book is written in plain simple english for simple people who want to learn about EV and the conversion process. Worth every penny, in my opinion.

Product Description
This report was created for global strategic planners who cannot be content with traditional methods of segmenting world markets. With the advent of a "borderless world", cities become a more important criteria in prioritizing markets, as opposed to regions, continents, or countries. This report covers the top 2000 cities in over 200 countries. It does so by reporting the estimated market size (in terms of latent demand) for each major city of the world. It then ranks these cities and reports them in terms of their size as a percent of the country where they are located, their geographic region (e.g. Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, North America, Latin America), and the total world market.

In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have been occasionally asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services across cities. The purpose of the studies is to understand the density of demand within a country and the extent to which a city might be used as a point of distribution within its region. From an economic perspective, however, a city does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries. To an economist or strategic planner, a city represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another.

In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for the world's major cities for "lithium-ion batteries for plug-in hybrid and pure electric vehicles" for the year 2009. The goal of this report is to report my findings on the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by a city when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent real sales. ... Read more

Product Description
This econometric study covers the latent demand outlook for lithium-ion batteries for plug-in hybrid and pure electric vehicles across the prefectures and cities of Japan. Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 1,000 cities in Japan. For each city in question, the percent share the city is of it's prefecture and of Japan is reported. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city vis-a-vis others. This statistical approach can prove very useful to distribution and/or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each prefecture and city, latent demand estimates are created for lithium-ion batteries for plug-in hybrid and pure electric vehicles. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

This study does not report actual sales data (which are simply unavailable, in a comparable or consistent manner in virtually all of the cities in Japan). This study gives, however, my estimates for the latent demand, or the P.I.E., for lithium-ion batteries for plug-in hybrid and pure electric vehicles in Japan. It also shows how the P.I.E. is divided and concentrated across the cities and regional markets of Japan. For each prefecture, I also show my estimates of how the P.I.E. grows over time. In order to make these estimates, a multi-stage methodology was employed that is often taught in courses on strategic planning at graduate schools of business. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Children's book, but nice pictures
As someone else mentioned, this is just a 47 page children's book, complete with extra large print. But you might want to get a copy anyhow, it does have a number of nice color pictures I haven't seen before. These include more photos of the Impact than I've seen before (six color photos), plus a cut-away drawing from a brochure on the Chrysler TEVan, a photo of the '67 Ford Comuta, and more. It's sad to read these 1994 books, they were *so* hopeful about the future of the GM Impact. See Who Killed the Electric Car? for THAT story.

1-0 out of 5 stars Outdated and wrong
I'm giving the book 1 star because it does point out a few good reasons for electrics, as well as some interesting history.

That said, the book is outdated and there is one unforgiveable error in this book. Here's the quote: "No electric car can go much more than 75 miles (121 kiometers) per hour."FALSE!!!The fastest electrics go 250+ MPH.Heck, electric dragsters can accellerate to 150+ MPH in just 1/4 mile! But really, how fast do you need to go anyway?

The book also made it look like electrics don't have heat.Get real!Ceramic heaters are used in electric vehicles and provide instant heat, unlike their gasoline brethren.

Another error... "The top range is 150 miles..."That may have been true when this book was printed, but in 1995 a company called Solectria built a composite car called the Sunrise that did 350 miles on a single charge. There are other examples of even greater distances, but I'll spare you.

1-0 out of 5 stars children's book
A simple children's book, not to be confused with the other electric vehicle books. ... Read more

Product Description
The electric vehicle is an established technology, performing the tasks asked of it in predictable ways and at predictable costs. But could expanded use of the electric vehicle have an impact in other areas of concern - on the environment, noise pollution, oil dependency, sustainability and so on? To do so in a noticeable way, the electric vehicle would have to become a significant part of the transportation system. The goal of this work is to address that issue. Whether or not the electric vehicle has technical properties that do respond effectively to these concerns is not central. Rather, the focus of this volume is the mechanisms whereby the electric vehicle could become a significant part of the transportation system, and the prospects of this happening. The chapters in this book address the question from a variety of perspectives. ... Read more
