5-0 out of 5 stars Berkeley Physics Course Vol 2
Quick delivery. Quality product. Packed with essential information. Easy to read and understand. I am a very happy customer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the Best E&M Book for First-Year Physics
I use this book, along with Kleppner & Kolenkow's "Introduction to Mechanics," as the texts in a two-semester sequence of first-year physics. There are simply no equals, as both books are both explicit in teaching the required procedures to attack problems, and subtle in their discussions of the physical phenomena and laws involved. The standard texts, fine as they are what they do, simply pale in comparison.

Our course is aimed a students with strong high school calculus and physics, usually of the AP variety. With these two books there is no need for students to jump into second-year physics (often without the proper mathematical preparation); there is plenty more to learn. If you want your graduates prepared for careers in physics or related sciences, start them off here. The downside is that both books are apparently out of print, and we have to resort to (legal) reproductions that are rather expensive for those who are unable or unwilling to find a used copy on the web.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good advanced introduction to E&M
I used this textbook for my E&M class. For the most part, this book is very clear. The only drawback is that the last couple of chapters do not present E&M in materials very well. Also, make sure you are familiar with multivariable calculus (i.e. partial derivatives, gradients, multiple integrals, Stoke's theorem, etc.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!
I've been searching for a RIGOROUS textbook on special relativity and electro-magnetism for a long time. This book is by far the best I have found!

5-0 out of 5 stars Verbose but interesting introduction to E&M
This book is really an intro to E&M but it is very dense with verbal descriptions of the physics involved. For that reason even though it seems light on equations it is fairly heavy reading.

There are plenty of diagrams and interesting situations.Rather than just throw out a few equations and work an example the author goes into great detail in describing the physics of a situation. I think it is a very useful book for that reason.

This is not the sort of text you can scan through to find an equation and then plug and chug some numbers. It requires actually reading the chapters to get the gist of what he's saying. It would be better paired with a book heavy on equations and examples and light on verbal descriptions rather than used stand alone.

The real gem in the book is the derivation of the magnetic field from Special Relativity. This is something that should be standard in E&M texts but seems to be missing in most of them. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Better tutor than my professor
I had a very uninspired professor that was mad at life and refused to explain concepts clearly. He would yell at us alot. Anyway I bought this book to prepare myself for exams and engineering certifications that require you to know Modern Physics and related concepts. BIG HELP!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Big Help in your Modern Physics Course
Physics 212 (Modern Physics) is a required course for Aerospace Engineering Students at KFUPM University in Saudi Arabia. I bought this book instead of Schaum's Outline of Modern Physics (ISBN 0070248303) as it was out of print when I needed to buy it. Only 107 out of 527 pages of this book, which I bought, covers the chapters related to modern physics. Therefore, it does not, to my way of thinking, worth to buy it if Schaum's Outline of Modern Physics (ISBN 0070248303) is on stock. However, if this book, which I did not buy, is out of print. Then I have got another talk.

Schaum's outline Beginning physics II: waves, electromagnetism, optics, and modern physics explains modern physics concepts very well indeed.More importantly, it solves problems clearly. Moreover, it helped me a lot in doing my homeworks problems quickly. Finally, it has a lot of solved problems of different ideas that I did not find in the textbook I used for this course, which was Modern Physics (ISBN 0030015472).

I strongly believe that you can make use of this book not only in your modern physics, but also in freshman physics courses as it covers topics such as waves and electromagnetism, which I had already studied in my freshman year physics courses. So, this book could be helpful for you inmore than two physics courses and, in that case, you will hit two birds with one stone if you buy this book. In addition, it is possible that you find Schaum's Outline of Modern Physics (ISBN 0070248303) to be not good. Then, in that event, you know the alternative: Make a beeline to this book.

(Dear readers: Please note that I have rated only the modern physics chapters of this book). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Classical Electricity and Magnetism
I have been going throughelectricity and magnetism books to find a good text at the graduate level and recently started to reread this one.Since originally finding this book (in the 1962 hardback edition) at a library sale as a grad student I have taught graduate electricity and magnetism and undergraduate electromagnetism classes from both Jackson and Griffiths as a professor. Griffiths was very clear but Jackson was just painful to use.Panofsky and Philips is a fairly old text, so I didn't pull it off the shelf.I should have.

Reading Panofsky and Philips again, the things that seemed obscure at when I was a grad student turned out to be the things I had worked out while making notes on Griffiths as a professor. The discussion is deeper though and goes into more detail with references to the literature that are really helpful and always motivated by the physics.Where Jackson is just opaque and obscure the discussions of difficulties here are logical and clear. It could use more examples and problems. The units are MKS which is helpful if you learned from Griffiths.Really outstanding text though I would supplement it with a problem book to get the full benefit.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best graduate level text available for Electrodynamics
I'm so thrilled to see that this book is back in print. It is vastly superior to the standard text (Jackson) used in most graduate physics programs. The explanations are concise but clear; and they help the student develop good physical insight. My only real criticism of this book is that the mathematical notation is a bit unwieldy, but it's used consistently throughout the entire text so that's not really a problem after you get through the first couple of chapters and get used to it.If you could have only one graduate level E & M book, this would be the one to get.

5-0 out of 5 stars Emphasizes physical understanding
I am writing this review to balance the review by the dissatisfied student. Do not believe it. Panofsky and Phillips is one of the great graduate level books on classical electrodynamics. It is comparable in level and quality to Landau and Lifshitz and to Jackson. As the student reveiwer implies it may be a bit less concise and somewhat more talkative than those two, but the explanations given are often profund and can be of great value to the serious, mature, and literate student. This book really belongs to a decent library on electromagnetism.

3-0 out of 5 stars Panofsky E&M 2nd Edition
Book is more about "words" than it is about math.YOu need to have a book like Jackson, or Griffiths to complement this book.To be honest, I hate it and don't use it.I like Jackson better.Makes assumptions with no proof. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A good reference
This is a good reference book on semiconductor physics, particularly on the basics. I will not suggest it for beginners though, but advanced graduate students may learn a lot of the basics, which they almost always think they know but actually do not. Examples juxtaposed with the text are helpful. But too much math many times obscure the physics that the book intends to teach. Nevertheless a good reference book for a library. ... Read more

Product Description

Semiconductor Device Physics and Design provides a fresh and unique teaching tool. Over the last decade device performances are driven by new materials, scaling, heterostructures and new device concepts. Semiconductor devices have mostly relied on Si but increasingly GaAs, InGaAs and heterostructures made from Si/SiGe, GaAs/AlGaAs etc have become important. Over the last few years one of the most exciting new entries has been the nitride based heterostructures. New physics based on polar charges and polar interfaces has become important as a result of the nitrides. Nitride based devices are now used for high power applications and in lighting and display applications. For students to be able to participate in this exciting arena, a lot of physics, device concepts, heterostructure concepts and materials properties need to be understood. It is important to have a textbook that teaches students and practicing engineers about all these areas in a coherent manner.

Semiconductor Device Physics and Design starts out with basic physics concepts including the physics behind polar heterostructures and strained heterostructures. Important devices ranging from p-n diodes to bipolar and field effect devices is then discussed. An important distinction users will find in this book is the discussion presented on device needs from the perspective of various technologies. For example, how much gain is needed in a transistor, how much power, what kind of device characteristics are needed. Not surprisingly the needs depend upon applications. The needs of an A/D or D/A converter will be different from that of an amplifier in a cell phone. Similarly the diodes used in a laptop will place different requirements on the device engineer than diodes used in a mixer circuit. By relating device design to device performance and then relating device needs to system use the student can see how device design works in real world.

This book is comprehensive without being overwhelming. The focus was to make this a useful text book so that the information contained is cohesive without including all aspects of device physics. The lesson plans demonstrated how this book could be used in a 1 semester or 2 quarter sequence.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introductory book for compound semiconductors device physics
There are many classic books out there for introductory semiconductor device physics written by eminent scholars such as Streetman, Pierret, Neamen and many more. These books were written for Silicon based devices. On the other hand, with the recent research advances in compound semiconductors, it becomes imperative to have a new book which is tuned to the fundamentals required to understand the physics behind these materials and the corresponding devices. This book has indeed been tailor made to meet such demands. The first chapter is an excellent introduction to crystal structures of semiconductors, much better than the earlier mentioned books. But, in my humble opinion, the second chapter takes the cake. I have never come across such an elegant analysis of band structures of devices in a book meant for electrical engineers. Generally, such discussions have been limited to physics textbooks which are not that easy to comprehend. I can go about other chapters to, but then, I believe you have got my point by now. This book treats the material is a totally different style which is very reader friendly.

Another salient feature of this book is the pedagogical tools employed by the authors. Every now and then, by using simple analogies, flowcharts and detailed illustrations, concepts have been nicely explained.

There is another book on compound semiconductor device physics by Sandip Tiwari which ishard to find these days. Moreover, its more inclined towards graduate students than undergraduates and hence expects the reader to have strong fundamentals. Hence, I will recommend that book as a supplement to this one.

So, if you are interested in understanding device physics for both Si based and compound semiconductors, this is an excellent introductory book. Being a doctoral candidate in solid state devices, I believe this book has a unique place in your collection. Also, the authors are really eminent researchers in their fields and this book is indeed a testament to their prowess in this subject. ... Read more

Product Description
At the beginning of the 18th century, there was no science of physics as we recognize it today: by the early years of the 19th century, there was. The articles in this volume are concerned with the process by which this came about. They focus, in particular, on the rise of experimental physics and the interactions between experiment, theory and mathematics in the study of electricity and, to a lesser extent, magnetism and physical optics during this period. Along the way, they provide a reassessment of Isaac Newton's influence on the science of his successors. A further recurring theme is the process by which ideas were disseminated within the expanding scientific community of the day, and the manner of their reception, often in a form somewhat different from that envisaged by their inventors, as is argued took place in the case of Franklin. The social and intellectual context of the "scientist", Professor Home contends, cannot be neglected, and several of these essays are devoted to this aspect, not only in England and France, but also offering new insights into the position of science in 18th-century Russia. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An Intuitive Text
This book is incredably clear and well-written. The illustrations are beautiful and the sample problems are illuminating. It's especially good for developing an intuitive understanding of the basic physics equations, without making the kind of committment the Feynman Lectures demand. I thought it was excellent preparation for the MCAT as well.

3-0 out of 5 stars Weak Text
This is a calc-based physics text.

Quick Reference: the material in this volume covers electic fields, electric potential, electrostatics, current (DC and AC) and circuits, magnetic fields, inductors, Maxwell's Equations/EM Waves, properties of light, mirror/lense optics, and interference/diffraction.

Review: the chapter on Maxwell's Equations and Electromagnetic Waves was exceptionally bad. It should have tied Electricity and Magnetism together, but just leaves the reader confused. The rest of the text makes everything more complicated than it actually is; Tipler won't give the concepts of the reader, the reader has to discover them on her own.The examples are not a sufficient level for the problems in the book. This book is NOT FOR SELF-STUDY.

Value of Book and a Better Text: the value of this book is minimal. For the price that is being asked (for just a single-volume paperback) is absurd. In place of Tipler's book, I would refer anyone to "Physics for Scientists and Engineers" by Serway; this book is sufficient for self-study, which is a quality you really need in a physics text. This book offers the material of 3 volumes of Tipler's books (the 3rd volume of Tipler's series is modern physics) at half the price. One of my friends has actually completely turned over to Serway, despite that her assigned text is Tipler (she doesn't even open her Tipler text anymore), and is now doing better in her class.

2-0 out of 5 stars Terrible for Physicists, Great for Engineers
The Tiper physics textbook, while excellent for an engineering student, lacks much of the theoretical rigor desireable in a physics curriculum. A great many of the problems at the end of the chapter prove to be remarkably simple, and boil down to hunting through the book for the right constants and the right equation to plug into to find the answer. Actual problem solving skills are not developed for a physicist. The chapters on circuits, while excellent for electrical engineering majors, are almost a waste of time for a physics major. Even though the textbook is very thorough with what it teaches, it does not teach at a very high level nor does it prepare physics majors for more difficult future classes. Having used the Kleppner and Kolenkow Introduction to Mechanics textbook for Intro. to Classical Mechanics, shifting gears to something as trivial in difficulty as the Tippler for Electrostatics just leads to frustration over spending more time finding the right constant than actually solving the problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tipler's Classical Physics Text is The best
I am a Physics major who finished my classical physics sequence and Tipler's volume of Classical Physics text is fantastic. Volume 2 focuses on Electricity, Magnetism, and Light. The text is clear, the problems are great. The biggest advantage to this text is its format. It has great pictures and amazing examples. Here is what makes Tipler's text in my mind better than Serway or H&R.There are numberous examples reflecting the problems set on the end of the chapter.many of these examples also are "try it yourself" examples, which has suggestions on one column, and the equations on one. Every example Tipler spells out the concept in words and puts the equation next to it. This builds on problem solving techniques, the hardest part of beginning and learning the introductory physics discipline. Other things worthy of note for TIpler is his subtle references to Modern Physics, indicating more is on the way in terms of the way we understand the universe. Overall, Tipler is fantastic.I highly reccomend his textbooks, He even has a Modern Physics text is the best in its class like his classical physics text. (remember a good book is never a substitute for a good teacher)

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but--!
Any physics textbook would be a good one in the hands of great teachers. However, without a teacher, Tipler's physics probably will not be the good choice. His way of thinking physics has a very unique personalcharacteristic: simple sentence contains deep meanings but does not haveclue to follow. Yes, it is an introductory text, but an introductory textshould, I think, explains concepts in a way that is easy for others to readand understand. It should not confuse the naive physics majors but to helpthem make the basic ideas more clear and familiar. In an advanced point ofview, his texts are excellent because the ideas require a considerableamount of thinking. It might have been a great intro. physics series if thesentenses are more concise and "elementary"! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars From Newtonian to Modern Physics
Asimov patiently and cogently wends his way from Classical physical theory to Modern theory, without, it seems, breaking a sweat. This is, as Asimov points out, a book largely about the collapse of Newtonian physics.I particularly liked his chapters on light, color, magnetism and electrostatics. This book would be a great elementary physics text.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best place to begin the study of physics
Although I took a full year of physics in college, I learned most of my physics from the three books in the Understanding Physics series by Isaac Asimov. As proof, I offer the fact that I scored a respectable 8 on the physics section of the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) that I took before starting the college physics class. My study of physics in preparation for the test began when I purchased and read the three books in the series. When I was in the physics class, I understood all of the ideas; the only part that presented any difficulty was applying calculus to the problems.
Asimov has a knack for writing about science in a way that allows for the rapid and complete learning of the concepts. This book covers the basics of light, magnetism and electricity and how they are intimately interrelated. . Unlike many other authors, Asimov does not hesitate to use equations in his explanations. I commend him for this, as you cannot learn physics without equations and the temptation to avoid them was no doubt strong. If you want to learn the fundamentals of physics, the three-volume Understanding Physics series by Asimov is the best place to start.

4-0 out of 5 stars The first "Physics for Dummies" book:
Asimov presents these aspects of phyiscs in bite-size pieces that anyone can digest. He uses everyday examples and only one or two simple equations to add emphasis. He explains where the math comes from and uses smalldiagrams to add a visual context. Some of the things he talks about areslightly out of date, but the history of the science is still interestingand enlightening. In general, the book is a bit of a snoozer, even for thehard-core science geek, but definitely worth reading for anyone who wantsto understand these aspects of physics better. ...
