Product Description
"Semiconductor Quantum Dots" presents an overview of the background and recent developments in the rapidly growing field of ultrasmall semiconductor microscrystallites, in which the carrier confinement is sufficiently strong to allow only quantized states of the electrons and holes. The main emphasis of this book is the theoretical analysis of the confinement induced modifications of the optical and electronic properties of quantum dots in comparison to extended materials. The book develops the theoretical background material for the analysis of carrier quantum-confinement effects, it introduces different confinement regimes for absolute or center-of-mass motion quantization of the electron-hole-pairs, and it gives an overview of the best approximation schemes for each regime. A detailed discussion of the carrier states in quantum dots is presented, including variational calculations, a configuration interaction approach, and quantum Monte Carlo techniques. Surface polarization instabilities are analyzed which lead to the self-trapping of carriers near the surface of the dots and the influence of spin-orbit coupling on the quantum-confined carrier states is discussed. The linear and nonlinear optical properties of small and large quantum dots are analyzed in detail, including transient optical nonlinearities (photon echo) and two-photon transitions. The influence of the quantum-dot size distribution in many realistic samples is outlined, including the analysis of quantum dot growth laws and universal size distributions. Phonons in quantum dots, as well as the influence of external electric or magnetic fields are discussed. The recent developments dealing with regular systems of quantum dots are reviewed, including a lattice model of quantum dots and quantum dot superlattices. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is worse than useless
I cannot adequately express the loathing I have for this so-called textbook.I began reading the sections on electromagnetism for review purposes but after finding 20 errors in three chapters I gave up in disgust. And I am neither a professional scientist nor educator. There is no possible excuse that can be given for actually asking somebody to pay any amount of money for this publication.Either the author didn't bother to read the book (hmm, did he even write it?), which is unconscionable, or he did and either didn't see all the errors, or he did and didn't care enough to have them corrected.I can think of no other logical conclusion and, therefore, no possible reason why anyone should consider the purchase of this book to be any sort of benefit in their lives. In fact, Schaum's ought to issue a product recall on this edition as an admission of defective production to scrape some of the egg off of their faces.

I would have given this book a NO-star rating if possible.I repeat (and so have many others), DO NOT BOTHER with this book.Save your money for ANY other physics book on the market. When you are positioned at the bottom of the barrel, any other location on the marketing ladder is an improvement.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome! Simple to Understand
This book is great. It helps you understand difficult topics in such an easy and quick way. It gives you lots of practice problems and solutions to each one. They help you solve problems the easy way.

1-0 out of 5 stars Please proof read before marketing to the public
The book was engaging in the fact that in presented challenging problems and helped the reader work through them but by chapter 10 I just couldn't take all the errors and had to put it down. There are numerous misprints for example problem 5.8 They set the problem up correctly but then clearly wrote the wrong answer (56,000 x 0.05 is not 2300).They misprint the number 34 with a 134 in problem 5.12 but then solve correctly, 5.17 they subtract m2g from m2a incorrectly but the next line reverse it.problem 5.19 when taking the derivitive of a sin they write the answer as sin, but the next line change it to cos. This is all very confusing if you are just learning the material, and the mistakes are everywhere. It becomes very time consuming to check and recheck answers just to find the book was wrong. This is the first schaum's outline I bought and will not buy another.

1-0 out of 5 stars Should be Recalled
I bought this book for my high school AP Physics child; it is almost evil to have a student suffer through wrong answers. I bought the book at Barnes and Noble and have returned it to them.I made a grat case for B&N to return all copies to the publisher as a protest.
When my child complained I checked with Amazon for confirmation; one great thing about Amazon is the reviews!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for review for
Aside from the typos (which I have since learned to expect in the Schaum's Outlines), I liked this book.It was concise and provided a means of getting a good review without having to pour through lengthy textbooks.

Sometimes, some steps are skipped from going from one formula to another but filling in those steps helped with the learning process.

Although not a complete study tool for the physics GRE (because it doesn't cover concepts like Lagrangians or advanced quantum mechanics that are found on the physics GRE), I definitely used it in conjunction with my undergraduate textbooks and I'm convinced it did help me with the physics GRE.

I wasn't particularly fond of his treatment of interference but I think he did a really great job with rotational kinematics and nuclear physics. But overall, a good review of physical concepts.

Product Description
Completely updated and expanded from the first edition, the "Survey of Semiconductor Physics", covers the basic elements in the entire field of semiconductor physics. Rather than treating semiconductor devices, this comprehensive reference emphasizes the materials and surface science involved. The second edition uses theoretical approaches and analyses for the basic material classes: crystalline, amorphous, quantum structures, and organics. The first volume provides thorough coverage of the structure of semiconductors, including: phonons; energy bands; photons as they interact with the semiconductor and other particles; defects; generation; and recombination kinetics. In both volumes, extensive appendices simplify searches for formulae and tables. A word index and reference listings allow readers to use the reference in multiple ways to discover expanding literature; to explore similarities and connecting principles in other fields; to find out how others in adjacent fields came up with intriguing solutions to similar problems; and to obtain a broad overview of the entire field of semiconductor physics. ... Product Description
This landmark work chronicles the origin and evolution of solid state physics, which grew to maturity between 1920 and 1960. The book examines the early roots of the field in industrial, scientific and artistic efforts and traces them through the 1950s, when many physicists around the world recognized themselves as members of a distinct subfield of physics research centered on solids. The book opens with an account of scientific and social developments that preceded the discovery of quantum mechanics, including the invention of new experimental means for studying solids and the establishment of the first industrial laboratories. The authors set the stage for the modern era by detailing the formulation of the quantum field theory of solids. The core of the book examines six major themes: the band theory of solids; the phenomenology of imperfect crystals; the puzzle of the plastic properties of solids, solved by the discovery of dislocations; magnetism; semiconductor physics; and collective phenomena, the context in which old puzzles such as superconductivity and superfluidity were finally solved. All readers interested in the history of science will find this absorbing volume an essential resource for understanding the emergence of contemporary physics. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars i disagree

i dont have it in front of me for a more detailed review, but the text is popular with german students and only after it became more widespread was it translated into english and redistributed. it's a fine introductory text (and better than kittel in my opinion, which reads more like a recipe-book).

1-0 out of 5 stars Seems very incomplete
We used this text in an introductory solid state course.Overall, it seems that the text is far too brief and doesn't thoroughly explain the material enough for an introductory course. There are very few examples/applications.The problems in the chapter require research outside of what is in the text.It leaves out a lot of important details.I would really suggest looking elsewhere for a good solid state introduction.

2-0 out of 5 stars Limited audience
I used this book in a course which was supposed to be an introduction to solid state. Know some basic ideas in crystal structure, quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, advanced and partial differential equations andFourier anlysis and then you'll begin to be ready to understand this text. Kittel's Solid State text is slightly more helpful (but only slightly). Thebook is completely devoid of examples, yet there are sections at the end ofeach chapter involving current applications and experiments in condensedmatter physics and materials science. Exercises require a leap ofunderstanding from the contents of the chapter before them.Someexperience with a computer language may also be necessary. I wouldn'trecommend this book for most undergrads. ... Read more

Product Description

Volume IX will be devoted to new materials (nanotubes, quantum dots) and new techniques (synchrotron radiation scattering and cavity confined scattering. In the past five years Raman and Brillouin scattering have taken a place among the most important research and characterization methods for carbon nanotubes. It is beginning to be used for other nanotube materials. It is also being used in the investigation of semiconductor quantum dots, in particular collections of them which order self-assemble) automatically as two-dimensional lattices. Among the novel techniques discussed in this volume are those which use synchrotron radiation as light source. Improvements in the intensity and beam quality of modern synchrotron sources fully dedicated to spectroscopic work have made possible their use as sources for light scattering spectroscopy. In the case of scattering by phonons, new methods of beam monochromatization have allowed resolutions better than 10 wave numbers, a fact which has lead to phonon dispersion measurements throughout the whole Brillouin zone. This development has been applied to the measurement of phonon dispersion relations in very small samples (of the order of 1 cubic mm) which cannot be investigated by inelastic neutron scattering. Also, the use of resonant Raman scattering by electronic excitations has allowed the determination of electronic energy bands in a number of materials. Another approach to Raman spectroscopy is to enhance its efficiency by using resonant cavities which are part of the sample. Electromagnetic resonances have been already used for some time. More recently, they have been combined with acoustic resonances to obtain large enhancements in Raman efficiencies.

Product Description
Electron Momentum Spectroscopy measures theenergy--momentum density of the electrons in atoms, moleculesand solids by means of a kinematically-complete ionization reactioninitiated by an electron beam. The construction of spectrometers andthe acquisition and reduction of cross-section data are described indetail. The quantum theory of the reaction is explained and theexperimental verification is given. It is shown how to extractquasiparticle orbitals, and coefficients describing electroncorrelations of the data. These quantities are derived from themany-body theory of the electronic structure of atoms, molecules andsolids. The relationship to less complete methods of investigatingelectronic structure is discussed. Examples are given of the determination of atomic and molecularorbitals and quantities relating them to the observed states of theresidual ion. For amorphous, polycrystalline and crystalline solidsand surfaces, examples show the energy--momentum density ofvalence electron bands, and effects due to electron diffraction andplasmon excitation. The book aims to give a complete account of electron momentumspectroscopy to date. Its significance is that it is a sensitive andexperimentally-verifiable test of essentially every aspect ofcalculations of electronic structure. It is the only such probeavailable. ... Read more
