5-0 out of 5 stars Creative ideas
This book basically show you what you and your embroidery machine can do. It opened my eyes. Before, I only know how to embroider a design in a center of a block, and then join several block to make a wall hanging or table runner. After reading this book, I know I can make a really art with the help of my embroidery machine.
Some reviews complained about the lacking of designs in CD, but this is not a drawback to me, as I actually don't want to copy an exact project except for practicing purpose. What important are the ideas and the techniques.
The included wisteria designs are actually very beautiful. Eileen also provided some other smaller project based on those designs in her Designs in Machine Embroidery magazine. I will use these small projects to build up my skills, and hopefully will come up with my own design soon.

2-0 out of 5 stars Initially enticing but then disappointing
I was very keen when I began this book.Roche's ideas are intriguing, and the book is nicely laid out with good directions. What I was NOT prepared for, though, was that even though the designs are supposedly from Amazing Designs, they simply are not there.Hence, it is quite difficult to follow Roche's directions.I think this makes the book something of a rip-off, since in the first place, one would assume the CD included the designs in her projects (as does Patty Albin's book and CD) and then when one overcomes this disappointment it becomes apparent that the designs are not even available at the sources she lists. The list price in Canada is $41.99--had I paid that price it would be back at the store, pronto.

4-0 out of 5 stars machine embroidery book
This is a xmas gift. The book arrive when I was told it would arrive. It was package very well and book was in excellent condition.

5-0 out of 5 stars a great jumping-off point
First, to clarify another review, the wisteria embroidery designs on the cover ARE on the CD included with the book, but the designs used in other projects are not. Most of them are Amazing Designs, and I think they are all currently available. However, none of the designs used in any of the quilts are particularly unique; you might already own designs that would work, and I've seen good substitutes on a number of sites. Check out places like Emblibrary.com, OregonPatchworks.com, and StitcheryMall.com for less expensive, downloadable alternatives to the boxed CD brands. Additionally, these are not cookie-cutter quilts. You can't reproduce them exactly even with the designs Eileen used, because you will never get the same fabric she used (as any quilter knows).

That said, I think this is a great resource for learning how to get past "plop and drop" designing with your embroidery and for making larger pieces by grouping smaller designs artistically. Eileen starts with a short discussion about where to get your inspiration by showing how she came up with one of the quilts. She discusses templates, using your embroidery software to make simple changes and combinations, proper hooping, considerations for stacking designs, and stabilizing large projects. She uses a variety of techniques to pull things together and avoid "plop & drop," such as ground fabric choices, different applique methods to add details and texture, and adding free-form satin stitch to link embroidery elements. She also gives detailed instructions for making a dozen pieces -- mostly wall hangings -- and includes templates for the applique elements that she has added.

Personally, I am well satisfied with the book and would recommend it to any machine embroiderer who is interested in using her stash of designs and fabrics in a more artistic, even painterly fashion, but needs some inspiration and a bit of guidance to get started.

1-0 out of 5 stars disappointed in cd
It was not clear to me before I purchased this book that the embroidery designs used in this book must be purchased separately -- they were not included on the cd. The book said they were available from Amazing Designs but that does not seem to be the case as they are not available. Very disappointed in this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Complete Book of Machine Embroidery
This book has all the information a beginner could need.A Great reference book!!! Also, fast shipment from seller.Thank You!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for embroidery machines!
Caution - this book is NOT what it may appear to be! It was written almost 20 years ago, and deals with using a SEWING machine and a variety of zig-zag stitching to achieve embroidery-type results. It is NOT about using embroidery machines. As an embroidery machine enthusiast, it was of little value to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars An essential part of any sewers library
As always, Ms. Fanning specialises in the head slapper in this book.Every time I go back through it I feel like an idiot for not having thought of some of the simple and (once pointed out) obvious techniques shedescribes.Whatever sort of embellishment you are planning, chances arethere is something in this book to make the process easier and moreeffective. And when you are not sewing, the book is fun to read!Herexplanations are clear and easy to envision.I have never actually madeone of the projects in the book, but have used the techniques on countlessprojects. She even says that's fine with her!A truly useful bookbrimming with GOOD ideas. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars No way is this a biginners guide
I was looking for an introduction to Machine embroidery.I would not use this book or recommend it as a beginners guide.Nice techniques, once you have an idea of the basics

1-0 out of 5 stars A deceptive title
Pam Watts has chosen an inappropriate title for this book. In no way is this a beginner's guide to anything. One would have to be an expert sewer with an elaborate machine and many years of sewing and quilting experience to benefit from this book. There is no mention of hooping or stabilizing fabrics. These are techniques that beginner's need to know. Beginners do not use silks and satins and fancy ribbons for a project. I am very disappointed and I wish a more appropriate title had been chosen for the book. If you are experienced in machine embroidery and want to paint pictures with threads and fabric, this book is for you. But it is not a guide for a beginner. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best
Once again Campbell-Harding and Watts prove that they are among the most knowledgeable of the machine embroidery teacher/writers.This book is quite useful to the embroiderer who wants to put their machining skills to the test. With details about tension, feed dog adjustment, stitch width they suggest ways of doing many patterns and textures with which to produce unique works of art.

1-0 out of 5 stars out of date
If I had a chance to see this bookbefore buying I would not have paid a dime for it.It's almost totally in black and white, and the chapter on "Exploring Colour" has no photos at all. The copyright is l989 with no revisions only reprints. A total waste of money.

1-0 out of 5 stars Machine Embroidery, Stitch Techniques
Had I the opportunity to "thumb through" the book before I bought it - I would not have made this purchase.Virtually all the pictures are in black and white, which make it extremely hard to discern what was done (i.e., layering, decroative stitch, fabric, etc).Yes, the technique is written for you, but a "color" visual along with the written word would have made for a far more superior book.I venture to say, this book will be donated to my public library.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an Excellent Book
A step by step guide to machine stitching. This book would be good for both the beginner and beyond. For each technique there is a box system that gives you a starting point for tension, pressure foot, needle size and lots more. Text gives variations to try. Can be used as a workbook. Start at basic and move on through different threads and materials. Most of these stitches can be done with the most basic sewing machine. Lots of examples using different threads and other materials and lots of diagrams and pictures. My only wish is that more of the pictures were in colour! ... Read more

Product Description

This book starts with the basics of free-machine embroidery and leads on to advanced techniques. Heavily illustrated with colour photographs, it includes many of the author's own ideas to make embroidered pictures stand out sculpturally. Building up techniques with textures and applique are explored, together with the use of thick threads, both wrapped and applied, stumpwork and fabric sculpting. The use of painted backgrounds and layers of semi-transparent fabrics add to depth and mood. This book can be a stepping stone to the development of readers' own ideas in this growing art, which is not tied to traditional ways. Two very helpful charts allow you to tell at a glance how the basic stitches are achieved, and how they can be used creatively.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Magic of Free-Machine Embroidery
Good read.I enjoyed the techniques, the color, and lots of pictures.Very good for anyone wanting to get into this sewing technique. It makes you want to pull out the machine and get started. Would recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book for Looking or Learning
As I've stated in other reviews, I've been doing freehand machine embroidery for 20 years, back when books on the subject were basically nonexistent. My background has been more heavily in applique and thread painting.

Like the excellent Alison Holt book on machine embroidered landscape work, Ms. Curran's art uses manipulation of the basic background prior to machine stitching. However, rather than using only silk and dying it, she also uses cotton and some other fabrics and paints them rather than dying them. She also uses application of multiple fabrics prior to stitching. It appears that her technique is somewhat more flexible.

Regardless, the results are stunning. Her techniques and works are shown to best advantage in the dozens of color illustrations throughout the book.I've certainly spent more on books that have much less visual content.

This book will serve as an excellent primer and introduction to those interested in embroidery by machine. It also demonstrates with clarity that a large financial investment in a computerized embroidery machine IS NOT at all necessary to produce artwork anyone would be proud to claim! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Art of Fabric Manipulation and Embellishment
The title of this book is misleading; a more apt title would have been - "The Art of Fabric Manipulation: using Machine Embroidery as Embellishment"

What this book offers is a wonderful view into the techniques of fine artists specializing in fiber/textile arts. Each page is richly illustrated with the artists' craft incorporating fine art techniques such as encaustics (paint, crayon), plastics, polymer clay on to fabric and lace. Most or all of the creations featured are one-of-a-kind pieces or benefit as exhibition pieces. If you consider yourself a fine artist with fabric, you will appreciate what this book has to offer in the way of fabric manipulation through sewing machine embroidery and fine art medium. The specific aspects of this book leads me to view this textbook as a professional monograph.

If you are looking for machine embroidery techniques to use with your computerized embroidery machine (Bernina, Pffaff, Brother etc), then I suggest you look into Embroidery Machine Essentials by Twigg and Goodall.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected!
I was dissapointed in the contents and projects in this book.Although beautiful, I think most were impractical.I also felt the book would be giving help and ideas for embroidery machines, not just embroidering on a standard sewing machine. While I would like to embellish cloth with embroidery, this book seemed beyond a beginner in scope and terminology.

It's a commonly accepted dictum in the fashion world that accessories can enhance any outfit. This is especially true for needlecraft projects ranging from purses and bags, to shoes and scarves. Through the deft use of a sewing machine, embroidery can transform everyday commonplace accessories into one-of-a-kind designer originals. That's the message of embroidery expert and needlecraft veteran Eileen Roche in "Contemporary Machine-Embroidered Accessories" showcases illustrated, step-by-step instructions for twenty-four embroidery designs in machine formats for eighteen different do-it-yourself projects suitable for even the most novice needlecrafter. Enhanced with complementary outfit ideas and alternate color suggestions for each project, "Contemporary Machine-Embroidered Accessories" comes with an accompanying CD-Rom with the embroidery designs. "Contemporary Machine-Embroidered Accessories" is an elegant and highly recommended addition for personal and community library fashion and needlecraft collections in general, and embroider instructional reference collections in particular.

5-0 out of 5 stars Machine Embroidery without an Embroidery Machine
Excellent beginner book for those who want to embroider with their standard sewing machines. All you need is a straight stitch and a zig-zag, though some other utility stitches are used. This book was copyrighted in 2003. At the time of this review, July 2009, there are many more threads available than there were when this book was published. Still, a good beginner free-motion embroidery guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Go a step beyond "good average" with this book
My wife is a professional-level heirloom seamstress. She's sold dresses in excess of $300 multiple times, and has taught classes at a university summer sewing seminar. And she learned from the book. There are a number of things that are useful to her, and enabled her to go beyond what she was already capable of.It's not a book for someone at a basic to intermediate level of skill, but high intermediate to advanced people should find it very useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars simple techniques for stunning results
This book details some stunning embroidery and embellishment techniques that even a beginner can accomplish. Each section includes a project with very clear instructions and diagrams.A complete supply list (including thread weight, needle type/size, what kind of stabilizer to use, which presser foot, how to adjust the bobbin/machine tension, etc.) is provided with each project. I higly recommend this book to anyone who has always wanted an embroidery machine but can't afford it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Read it twice
When I first received this book order I skimmed through it and put it aside because it wasn't what I had expected.I recently picked it to file in my library and got distracted really studying it.Its now on my work table.
When I originally ordered it I think I was distracted by the cover - was thinking of purses and purse patterns versus fabric manipulation techinques.I now have made a list of the techniques in the book and hope to do one a week for about half a year (I don't plan on doing the knitting items...there were several I believe).Elli covers different ways to dye/color fabrics, decorate fabrics, resew a different way, etc.And there are about a dozen PROJECTS also where the reader can implement several of the techniques being taught in the book.
The reason I don't give it a 5 is that I wish that there were a few more projects for items pictured in the book...there were several great vests (basic pattern was included) but not always a detailed explanation on the techniques used in all of them.(But then again, I might not have read deep enough so they might be there.) ...
