3-0 out of 5 stars Machine Embroidery on Paper
The book is well written. The designs are wonderful.Unfortunately, two of the project files on the CD cannot be downloaded on my XP system because the file titles have quotation marks around them. I attempted to contact the publishing company, Krause Publishers on their website. I have not received a reply. This is a big disappointment.

2-0 out of 5 stars Left Me Wanting More...
I was looking mainly for technical information, such as choosing paper, thread, needles, etc. as well as inspiration. I got neither. One look thru the book and my heart fell. Wasted $$$. There may be an audience for this book (thus 2 stars) but it surely wasn't me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Price Less!!!
Decorative Machine Stitching was published 1990. The pictures are perfect. The pictures in this book are better than a DVD on the various stitch techniques. I have often preferred to have video than pictures of certain stitch variations. After purchasing various books from the Singer Reference Library, I can truly recommend their Whole sewing library. This book can be utilized by beginner as well as advanced sewers. I regret not having purchased this book sooner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful!
I love it! Lots of ideas for using my machines and the attachments that go with them.

2-0 out of 5 stars don't like it
This book doesn't really tell me what I wanted to know.It arrived smelling like cigarette smoke and it suppose to be brand new.

5-0 out of 5 stars Decorative Machine Stitching (Singer)
Very good book for those interested in heirloom projects. These projects ideas will work on most sewing machines.Since there is a new edition out, this one is very well priced.I have not seen the new edition to know if there is a great deal of updating and new information. But this is a nice book for heirloom details.

5-0 out of 5 stars Teaches Decorative Stitching on a Regular Machine
This is the only book I found that shows how to use the basic machine stitches for decorative sewing. Most books elaborate on how to use the fancy computerized decorative stitches available on the expensive sewing machines.

Today, most sewing machines come with a basic amount of utility stitches and this book shows by increasing the stitch size, using double stitching and staggering, beautiful effects are created. The results will take time and practice, but are well worth it. ... Read more

SYNOPSIS
Start with fabulous border prints, add sheer overlay fabrics and dazzling machine embroidery, and top it all off with beautiful beadwork. You'll love the eye-popping effect this exciting process will bring to your work.

4-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational
I love to cruise through the photographs in this book when I am looking for inspiration. It is filled with photos of beautiful embellishments mostly done on border prints.Dibbs shows step by step how to use decorative machine stitches and beads to create fabric with rich texure and sparkle. Most of the book is devoted to 10 projects which use the same technique which is quick and simple to learn and understand. The bright, bold photos really stir my creativity and make me dream of ways I can make a pretty print dress become a spectacular attention grabber, or convert a simple pair of tab top curtains to a focal point by adding a border print stripe and embellishing with rayon and metallic thread along with some well placed seed beads.

I would not use her technique on a quilt, though, as she has done in some of her projects.I think quilts should be snuggly.I think this technique is best in small patches because it packs quite a punch. It can be labor intensive, especially if using many beads, but like rich dessert, a little goes a long way.

2-0 out of 5 stars Magazine Article Sized Idea
This book continues the trend of little content being present in small (96 pages) books filled with full color photographs of the same idea over and over again.

Rather then being called "Machine Embroidery & More", the title should have been "Embellishing Border stripes with Machine Embroider and Hand Beading." Most of the projects consist of a Jinny Beyer Border Print that has been mitered around a plain center. Built-in decorative stitches are sewn over and beside the printed pattern on the border and then many tiny beads are hand sewn. The result is a lavish border in which the amount of labor invested can not be appreciated unless you are standing very close to it. Oddly enough these elaborate borders become the whole interest of the work, for they are placed around a plain and in some projects, very large, single center squares. The result looks like a very lovely, but empty picture frame.

The technique will only appeal to those who enjoy both machine and hand work. The projects for the most part, look incomplete, since the large center part of the quilt is empty. However, I could see the border treatment being use on a special quilt. I would have enjoyed seeing this technique in a single chapter or magazine article, but as an entire book, it is lacking.

Not Recommended.

2-0 out of 5 stars Machine embroidery and more....
This book has some interesting projects but I found them to be incredibly time consuming and lacking in function. A pillow or a quilt that is weighed down with stiff embroidery and beading is not exactly inviting to snuggle with. Don't get me wrong, these projects are original and interesting but I personally feel that if I am going to invest large amounts of time and energy into something, I want to be able to enjoy it afterwards. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Nostalgic redwork
"Redwork from the WORKBASKET" is am amazing collections of designs and instructions. It is just old-fashioned redwork, but a person can either trace the pattern to be hand sewn, or use the included CD for the designs to be stitched using your embroidery machine. Check the formats to be sure it will work with your home machine, but either way, these are great designs. Try using a variegated red thread for added interest. This is a winner!

Wildly colorful (and not extremely difficult once you get thehang of it), Deborah Gonet's machine embroidery designs do not requirean elaborate computerized sewing machine, just a machine capable offreestyle sewing (meaning that the feed dog can be lowered or coveredso you can sew in all directions). Then, with an embroidery hoop, anarray of colorful threads, and some silk, velvet, or cotton, you cancreate stunning clothing, accessories, and home furnishings. Thebook's final section details all the basic techniques and includescomplete clothing patterns (along with specifications for enlargingthem on a photocopier). The bulk of the book presents step-by-stepinstructions for 23 projects, enabling the reasonably proficient sewerto transform circles, squiggles, zigzags, flowers, stars, and planetmotifs into adornments for very attractive shirts, vests, hats, scarves, bags, buttons, quilts, pillows, and curtain tiebacks. Thedirections are fairly thorough but do require patience andpractice. Product Description

Combining her love of gardens and landscapes with her skills as an artist and a machine embroiderer, Alison Holt shows you how to create exquisite flower pictures using your sewing machine. Alison's interpretations of what she sees in nature are so detailed that many people at first mistake her embroideries for paintings or even photographs. Alison's technique is to use her sewing machine like a paintbrush to apply threads in a myriad of different colours on to a canvas of hand-painted silk. She uses two basic stitches - straight stitch and zigzag stitch - to make fine and broad 'brushstrokes', blending both to achieve stunning results. This comprehensive and colourful book covers everything from composing a picture and setting up the machine to choosing threads and silk paints and creating different effects in stitch. Each of the three step-by-step projects allow you to put all you have learnt into practice to make a stunningly effective embroidered picture, and will inspire you to transform what you see around you into your own, unique designs.

But since it is the only one of its kind that I have, I'm using it and am about to finish a quilt with a shape from the cd. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars VERY SMALL PRINT
My newest passion is machine embroidery and so on the recommendation of Bella Online I purchased the book.By the beautiful samples it appears to be filled with great information, if I could only read it with ease. The print is unusally small and the small project descriptions are practically unreadable, so it has been a slow read with the use of a magnifying glass. The margins are wide so wonder why the printer chose such a tiny print.Lest you think it is my eyes, I have a huge library of quilting and sewing books and have never encountered this
problem before. The three stars are because of the print size. What a shame because I'm really intrigued by the photos.

4-0 out of 5 stars Practical, Simple and Fun!
I read and review a lot of things as the Embroidery host for BellaOnline and this is one of the best books on Machine Embroidery I have come accross.

I found it easy to follow, with projects matched to the lessons and experience required in the lesson.

This book is a great book to have whether you are a beginner machine embroiderer or an advanced one.

Learn to use your sewing machine creatively - this book teaches you that you do not have to have a specialised "embroidery machine" to do beautiful machine embroidery.

3-0 out of 5 stars Same old thing...
This is no different than other books on embroidery I have seen.Actually, it convinced me that I should (once I learn how to do it myself...)make a video, as it would be so much easier to learn from than trying to follow diagrams such as those found in this book. ... Read more
