Great for CEN Prep
This book is a great resource for preparing for the CEN exam.I started out with the Emergency Nursing Core Curriculum but found this book to be a much better book for me.It is logically organized and provides a good overview of each topic before providing details on the managment of each presentation.While it does not cover every detail contained in the CEN exam, it is a great starting point.

The best ER book around!
I highly recommend this book for ANY nurse in the ER. I'm studying for my CEN, and this is the best resource book I've found so far! A lot of pictures, easy to understand, and it covers EVERY emergency medicine topic!! One tip for studying for CEN: Do not waste time with Q&A books until you have solidified your knowledge base- using a comprehensive book like Sheehy's!!! Once you have the knowledge, then go ahead an do questions!

Excellent resource for CEN exam and ER practice
I just recently passed the CEN exam and I credit this book primarily. I've only been in the emergency department a little under two years and a year ago I realized that I really needed a resource that detailed everything an ER nurse should know. I bought this book then and have been reading it over the following 9-10 months to solidify my knowledge base and prepare for the CEN exam. I will attest that everything on the CEN exam was covered in the pages of this book, but even better, after having read the book I feel much more confident about my practice as an ER nurse. I would suggest any nurse working in a ER to have this book at their disposal.

What a waste of time and dosh.
I was really disappointed with this book, thought I'd find useful information, but it was stuff a layperson would probably know :(

Frm some1 w/an A on EM rotation + EM residency of my choice
This is an awesome book.Everyone doing an EM rotation or interested in EM residency needs to buy this book and memorize it from front to back.I wanted to do well on my EM rotation.When I started, they gave me Tintanelli and said read it (yup in 4 weeks!)So I bought the Tintanelli study, and that was too big, and then I bought the even smaller tintanelli pocket, that that was too big and then I bought NMS emergency medicine and that was too dry and not practical.Then, I stumbled across this book.I was half way through the rotation, had two weeks with a busy work schedule and I simply read this book, made flashcards on all of it, memorized them and aced the exam.My conclusion is that as a student or starting out, you have to prioritize your time.Your choice is to know alot about one or two things (pick up tintannelli) or you can know a good, working, basic level about everything, (do what I did and memorize this book).It doesn't stop you from also reading Tintannelli on subjects you are particularly interested in, or Rosen's 5 minute when you are working, or anything else for that matter, but to not read and memorize this book is doing yourself a disservice if EM is your interest and you are just starting out because it covers everything you need to know in a readable, practical way.Good luck.

Don't waste your money
I am sick of these "pearl" books.These pearls, if worn, will turn your neck green.Obviously little effort was put into the production of this collection of tid bits. You can learn more medicine by watching one epispode of "Scrubs".Don't waste your money.

Keep it in your pocket.
This is essential reading for fourth year medical students and for interns.The book covers some of the basics in Emergency Medicine, things that you'd write down when your senior decides to teach.You can read itin one or two sittings before you start and keep it in your pocket forquick reference.The book is not comprehensive, but what do you want for apocket primer (it actually fits in your pocket).I highly recommend it.

Good, could be even better
The information and the way it is delivered are excellent, except for one most annoying problem: There are cover to cover acronyms and, unless one is reading from cover to cover, one is bound to come up against an acronym which means nothing to one! (And so, presumably, to one or two, or more, others). The book is heavy (pounds weight) but would more expansive elucidation of these abbreviations be a waste of resources? If so, a glossary of these time wasting distractions needs to be appended.

I have found this book excellent to use.It is a pretty compact book covering most areas of emergency medicine in less than 1000 pages.The only downside is that sometimes due to this the finer details are missing.... but i guess that's what those big thick reference texts are for.Also it's written by members of the Australian College of Emergency Medicine so it's great for studying for ACEM exams. ... Good Read
This was a good read.It was the textbook for the Tactical Medic course I was in.Didn't really get a chance to read it at the course, but since then have gotten into finishing it.

Save your money
I have prior experience with "Tactical Medicine" through my service within the military, and as a Swat Team medic and I would have to say that there's nothing "Tactical" about this book whatsoever other than the picture on the cover-Save your money! It wasn't worth the hard earned money that I spent on it, Don't make the same mistake that I made and by this "Tactical" book!

I'd Give It Zero Stars If I Could
As a operational medical provider and later physician, having served in combat, civilian TEMS, and international disaster and remote medicine for 25 years, I can say without hesitation that this 'text' is a useless rehash of standard CONUS urban EMS and outdated and abandoned military medicine concepts. It reflects none of the critical lessons learned since Gulf 1, nor our changing understanding of how people die, and live, in operational and resource limited settings.

Many of the facts are simply wrong, wrong when the text was written, and even more so today.

The suggested solutions show no evidence that the authors have any real appreciation for the second by second difficulties, change in priorities, and realities of limited resources that actually characterize 'military and operational out-of-hospital medicine.'

If you think the topic is wholly encompassed by helicopters and ambulances at your beck and call, care under white lights, and someone else to do your carrying and grunt work, this book is for you.

If you are looking for solutions to managing an officer with a heart attack while pinned down behind a barricade for 6 hours with the resources you have on your tac vest, managing a pelvic GSW with a field transfusion under NVG's, or coordinating the evac of a trooper down a mountain... in other words, real operational medicine rather than sanitized urban CONUS EMS medicine in BDU's... look elsewhere.

uneven quality
tho re-issued in 1999 (with corrections), this book is not very well edited. For example, the index is often off by a couple of pages, figures are miss-captioned, & I'd love to be there when the unsuspecting reader applies eucalyptus oil instead of eugenol to your toothache. No doubt a fine text in a classroom situation with a good instructor, but on its own merits, leaves much to be desired. A bit out-of-scope for entry-level EMS personnel wishing to 'expand their knowledge', but the chapter on ambulatory care, for example, is hoplessly 'in-scope' compared to books like 'ditch medicine', 'special forces medical handbook', 'barefoot doctor's manual' or 'where there is no doctor'. And $... ???? Textbook price reminds me of college.

Tactical Operational Medicine
Dr. De Lorenzo and Mr. Porter have written a very readable product on operational medicine.This is an area of medical practice that begs for more documentation, and this text is a good start.Although the information contained in the text leans heavily to the military operational side, there is a great deal of information useful to civilian Tactical services.Some of the opinions are a little controversial, but the authors take a stand and attempt to justify their opinions.Topic areas such as laser and microwave injuries are not available in other sources.The approach taken by these authors is very practical and useful from a clinical point of view.This book is a valuable addition to any emergency physician or paramedics library.I hope to see further editions with improvements. ... Great book, very concise and handy!!
I love this book. It was my bible when I was in my internship, but was also a helpful reference for me working as a general practitioner as well. It is very concise and has at least a little information on a lot of subjects, even hyper-osmolar non-ketotic syndrome if you were like me and actually didn't learn about that one in vet school. It can get you through a crisis. I would say it is due for a new edition which is why I go for 4 instead of 5 stars.

Excellent quick reference
Purchased recently to help my work in an Emergency clinic. The book is an excellent collection of conditions commonly encountered in a busy ER clinic set up.Very comprehensive, informative.
Each condition is described very professionally from description of the condition-diagnosis-prognosis-treatment including the description for many procedures used in the treatment.Doses of medications is very informative.

Repetitions are to be avoided; example-the procedure for "gastric lavage" is repeatedly described in detail under all conditions that possibly require a gastric lavage.Instead of this the general procedure for gastric lavage could have been described at one place and reference to that page can be given on all conditions requiring a gastric lavage.This can save a lot of pages of print.

A few demonstrations of how to calculate a CRI would be very helpful.
Inclusion of color pictures illustrations can save a lot of space in describing the procedures.

there needs to be another option out there
the 48 practice cases are useful but i really wish they put in a little more effort fleshing them out so that when you do drills you are able to ask a good history. most of the patient details in the cases are left out, and sometimes the details are important (like virtually no details of presenting history, no pulse ox in most of the patients who are short of breath, no mention of repeat vitals when trying to assess the patient for response to resuscitative efforts). it's difficult to guide your therapeutic plan with this kind of information missing. there are also tons of typographical and grammatical errors. you would think people with advanced degrees wouldn't put out something that looks like it was put together by grade schoolers with an uncanny medical knowledge base. also, as mentioned in other reviews, the book advocates for many outdated treatment modalities which may actually harm your test score if followed.

the good thing about the book is that by running the cases you can establish a template in your mind so that things don't go missed at the exam. the fact is that the oral board exam is a contrived simulation. most of us have the requisite medical knowledge to manage these cases if encountered in real life. the important thing is to not forget to do things that you would always do in real life when there is a real live patient in front of you. wash and dress wounds. check a blood sugar. put the patient on oxygen. basic stuff. you just have to find a way to be systematic to avoid missing anything.

unfortunately, i can't recommend you not buy this book because honestly, it seems the only other options to prepare for this test is to pony up the dough for a $1000 review course, or to just study texts on your own. the entire first two sections of the book (a rundown of all the potentially covered topics, replete with the same typographical, grammatical, and informational errors) can be ignored, as that material is best covered by reviewing a text of your choice. i just wish they had spent more time on the cases, because they could have been of so much more use to me.

one final piece of advice, make a list of procedures that you don't do often enough to be able to effortlessly describe, write a short description of each and drill yourself on describing them out loud in case you run into a case that requires you to perform the procedure.

Don't Waste Your Time
The book is filled with mistakes.They have a lot of MDs listed under the contributors, and I wonder if any of them took the time to do any research on what they were writing.

Also, you can't use the case portion of the book with out another emergency medicine doctor that really knows their stuff running the cases with you.

I haven't taken the boards yet, but I'm pretty sure that learning inaccurate information is not going to help me pass.

Concise and to the point.There are a few errors though, especially with dosages.Overall, decent review book for a quick review.

Save your money
Save your money. Buy a used third or forth edition if you like. The forth edition needed a serious update as other reviewers have stated. This is now a dinasour. If you want to flunk the boards use the treatment protocols. Many are only valuable as history of how we practiced E.M. 10-15 years ago.ie. ACLS is at least two AHA revisions behind (?1999). Adb trauma still uses DPL and doesn't memtion US. They didn't even bother to correct the typos from the 4th Ed. The cases are good for review but that's about all.

A Must Have Resource
This is a great tool to use while preparing for the Oral Board Exam.Read the content info first, but don't read the cases. It's most helpful to use as your own "Practice Board Review Course"..grab a study-buddy, number all the cases, and pick them out of a hat to practice in the true style of the Boards.Some are a little far fetched for the actual exam day, but those just keep you anxious enough to keep studying.If you master this book, the Boards are a snap. ... I really don't know why so many reviewers are heaping all of the praise for this book.This text is required reading for the clerkship that I just finished in emergency medicine.It is 900 pages of redundant, poorly explained, outdated material that leaves me no better informed than when I first began.A quick comparison of this book with Titinalli reveals that Hamilton's chapters are overly long, yet do not do any better of a job of explaining relevant material.The book seems to use a looped approach to teaching: that is, a subject is introduced from start to finish (history, physical, and treatment) and then re-discussed and finer detail of history, physical, and treatment.In the end, I end up spending well over an hour per chapter to read something that takes me only 10 minutes in Titinalli.Also, some of the information in this text is outdated.The ACLS guidelines go against what the first few chapters of this book teach.It is important for a textbook to stay current and to have regular updates using the latest available literature.I would recommend that a person use either "An Introduction to Clinical Emergency Medicine" or Titinalli.

Required text
I got this book because it is required reading for the emergency medicine rotation at my school but I find it to be a dull read and lacking in good pictures.My clerkship director recommends Tintinelli or Rosen.

Excellent book.
This is an excellent book.Very readable.It utilizes primarily a sign and symptom-based layout with many useful suggestions on how to approach many common as well as not so common ED presentations.It is 900 pages and has many good pictures and diagrams.The index is very good as well.For a quick reference when there is not extensive time to research a topic, as well as for a straight read, this book is solid.

Excellent for medical students
This is perhaps the best book for a MS4 in a EM rotation.It can be covered completely in a month, without going "balls to the walls" crazy while studying.Highlights differentials and treatments, less on the pathophys. side.Med students need something to cover in a month, and this is the best that I've read.

Resident Review
This text has been required reading for the radiology program I attend, however, I must admit that many senior residents strongly advise incoming residents to return it for a refund as residents cannot afford a textbook that is low-yield.I have read several chapters and find it not very helpful.I feel that your money and time is better spent reading a standard introductory diagnostic radiology text (not Squire's as this is more suited for medical students) such as Helms Diagnostic Radiology or the MGH Primer or better yet, saving your money for the costly registration fees for your boards.Trust me on this one.
