Product Description
SOAP for Emergency Medicine features 85 clinical problems with each case presented in an easy to read 2-page layout. Each step presents information on how that case would likely be handled. Questions under each category teach the students important steps in clinical care.

Blackwell's new SOAP series is a unique resource that also provides a step-by-step guide to learning how to properly document patient care. Covering the problems most commonly encountered on the wards, the text uses the familiar "SOAP" note format to record important clinical information and guide patient care. SOAP format puts the emphasis back on the patient’s clinical problem not the diagnosis.

This series is a practical learning tool for proper clinical care, improving communication between physicians, and accurate documentation. The books not only teach students what to do, but also help them understand why. Students will find these books a "must have" to keep in their white coat pockets for wards and clinics. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not evidence based, not a great review
While claiming to be a review guide "in pursuit of evidence-based decisions," this book is neither evidence-based nor a particularly good review.Citations are not given (the bibliography for the entire book only contains 18 entries, most of which are not primary sources). Many therapies covered are outdated or incorrect (for examples, the authors recommend steroids, anti-histamines, and epinephrine for ACE-Inhibitor induced angioedema). The format may be useful for some readers who are cramming for their boards, but I found reading the book to be akin to reading someone else's lecture notes, with an organization scheme that was difficult to follow.

There are many good emergency medicine review books available.I had hoped this one would be unique in offering an evidence-based review.Unfortunately, this book did not live up to its promise of being either a great review book or an evidence-based guide. ... Read more

Customer Reviews (3)

1-0 out of 5 stars Very outdated
Though the format of the book is good, it suffers greatly from being extremely out of date, though the copyright is 2006 the information is at least 10 years behind and not appropriate for boards review.Additionally, questions are frequently repeated either verbatim, or re-phrased, diluting the value of the questions.Additionally, some questions which are similar provide contradictory answers. This is still a good format, but the editors need to commit to an overhaul, in current form this is not a useful book.

2-0 out of 5 stars I feel duped!!!!!!!!!!
I would like to start by saying that the overall format of the book is great and could be useful but I would be ashamed to call myself an editor for this text and call it a "new" addition. The text is clearly out of date which is a shame because if someone would have had the energy to do it right this could have been a gem. I don't expect something published in 2005 to refer to cardiac troponins as a new test. There are abundant references to streptokinase which I guess is acceptable but most new grads finishing an er residency will have never heard of LDH1/LDH2 ratios and most certainly lovenox has become more commonly used in practice since this books last printing (the only form of heparin mentioned is IV). Give me a break! Don't re-publish old stuff and call it a new addition without updating it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pearls of Wisdom an Excellent Choice
The overall context of the book if very well done. For the purest and the fanatic, this book had every workable piece of knowledge as it pertains to emergency medicine. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
The Nancy Caroline book is a great textbook for any up and coming paramedics.Even after class is over it is a good book to have on the shelf for reference. As always Amazon got me the cheapest price with great service. Thanks

1-0 out of 5 stars Emergency Care in the Streets
I believe that this seller, usprivatedetectives, is a deadbeat. They never sent the book, and they never responted to requests about it. It has been four months since I ordered it. No response. They should be kicked off Amazon.com. For the record, Amazon.com did not respond to requests either. Buyers beware.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference for QAS course
If you're trying to decide between this & the mosby's paramedic textbook, this is the one to pick, especially if you're doing the QAS diploma.
QCESA will tell you to get the Mosby's, but this is the book that the LAP books are based on, therefore you might'nt find the answers in the Mosbys.
Other bonuses that this has over the Mosbys':
It's well printed - all the colours are in register, the images are good quality & well reproduced, the captions match up with the images, it is written in an easy to understand language, and the anatomy & physiology & pathophysiology sections are a brilliant reference!
Don't buy the Mosbys'!

5-0 out of 5 stars Third year med student
I am currently a third year med student planning to go into emergency medicine.I picked up this book from a friend who already did a EM clerkship and highly recommended it. I wanted something to read before I do my EM audition rotation in June.It is the same format as the recall series which I like alot.Overall, I think this is a great book for bread-n-butter EM topics your bound to hit such as chest pain.I think this book is pretty comprehensive and an easy read.It contains some very nice useful charts like the NIH stroke scale and a toxidrome chart.I've gotten via half of it and definitely recommend it.I do notice it was light on the ortho stuff, something that hopefully will be fixed if they do a second edition.A big plus if your doing any EM rotation or week.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent review book for any emergency medicine clerkship
Reviewer:Fourth medical student going into emergency medicine

Overview:Deja Review EM is a question/answer book much like the very popular First aid series or Recall series. It is similar to the First aid series except this particular one has sections of brief, but high yield clinical vignettes that I thought were particular useful and some nice charts.

    Positive:
1.It was packed with very high-yield questions, all bread-n-butter EM topics that attendings I worked with asked me.
2.Charts:It contained very useful charts I used a lot such as a tox antidote chart, toxidrome chart, and NIH stroke scale that was easy to refer to.
3.Clinical Vignettes:Short brief basic scenarios that one would normally see in the ED with brief diagnosis that was also very good to read.
4.Short and to the point:Much as I wanted to read Rosen's or Tin, I had little time to do that type of reading.I really needed a book that had sort of "just the facts" information for quick reference and something I can read in bursts like when I am in the bathroom.
5.Pretty small compare to other review books and would carry it with me on the wards.
6.Very well-organized by systems which I am use to.

    Negatives:
1.I think the thing that makes the book so useful on the EM clerkship can be a negative.Since it is just Q/A format, it does not have pathophysio that may be important to know, but if I needed to know that I would just use a major text.
2.I think the organ-based system is great, but I know some books out there use more of a complaint-based approach much in the way you would see a patient is.Some people prefer this method of learning which is totally fine, if that is the case, the system-approach of this book may not be the best for you.

    Overall:
I honestly thought this book was an excellent read that was fast to read and very high-yield.I do really felt it helped me immensely on my EM clerkship as I could quickly look via it after I saw a patient. My clerkship was a good experience and my attendings actually encouraged me to look things up after I saw a patient.I know not all clerkships work this way.I also choice this book since it seems to be really new, I think it came out a week before my rotation.I also used Recall, which I thought was good, but a little too dense.Anyways, I highly recommend this book to anyone doing an EM clerkship. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Loved it
This is an excellent book- There are several attributes that make this book ideal for the EM physician who is learning EKG's:

1.) Cases are quick and short, so if you only have 10-15 min you can get valuable info during that time.
2.) It starts easy and gets harder which is ideal.
3.) You see multiple variations of the same thing with thorough explanations each time.

I went through the 1st section with about 30 min 3x a week in one month and felt more comfortable reading EKG's than some of my senior colleagues.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!
This is the perfect follow-up to Mattu and Brady's first EKG book, and a must read for those who really want to fine-tune their EKG skills.
As with the first volume, this one contains hundreds of unknown EKG's and a one-line clinical vignette. Once you have made your reading, you check the correct answer at the end of the section, which also includes teaching points.

Neither of these books would be for someone new to reading EKG's - they are too demanding. But, for those wishing to be as good as you can be, go through these two volumes.

    Then do it again!

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great book!
If you want to be challenged, this is the book for you. All of Mattu's ECG books humble me.I recommend this one to our residents.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not really designed for the ER physician
I bought this book for reference in the emergency department. The first time I pulled the book out I was disappointed to find that there was no section on cardiac ultrasound or even explanation as to why it was absent. It appears the book was written by 3 RDMS certified non-physicians which would not be a problem in itself if it were evident that they obtained the advice and input of a practicing emergency physician. As is the case I found the book to be of very limited usefulness in the setting of an emergency sonography reference.

    Pros:
    - goes into detail for abdominal and pelvic ultrasound and could be used by the advanced sonographer looking to go beyond goal directed emergency ultrasound.
    - has some interesting images for specific abdominal pathology.

    Cons:
    - missing several sections that are important in ED ultrasound. Specifically does not have sections on cardiac, thoracic, head and neck.
    - fails to go into detail for ultrasound guided procedures. The ultrasound guided procedures section is 5 pages of a 300 page book. Has no images of US guided line insertion.
    - goes into more detail than is applicable for the practicing EM physician for much of the abdomen.Has a large section on pancreatic ultrasound which is not a typical emphasis of ED ultrasound.
    - fails to go into detail for ultrasound procedures important in emergency medicine. The FAST exam encompasses 2 pages. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent balance of information
i'm a msiv going into em, and this book has been the perfect balance of practical management and "less practical facts a med student always gets pimped on." the chapters usu are short - anywhere btwn 5-13 pages - which are great for my short attn span/limited time, and is organized by case scenario, intro, history, history/diagnostic eval/phys exam, differential, management, dispo, and _then_ pathophys.

i feel like i always get bogged down in the pathophys in int med txtbks and am too tired to read about management by the time i finish all the discussion of obscure cytokines, receptors, etc. this txbook gets you thinking up front as to what you need to focus on, what you need to keep inthe back of your mind, and what you need to do about the situation.

if you're rusty/coming back after a year off, i'd also recommend SOAP for emergency medicine to get you up and running in a few days.also grab a copy of the tarascon pocket emergency medicine so you can look up all those evidence-based criteria for PE/DVTs, etc. it's also got a really rough visual chart in there (better than nothing!).folks also like case files, emergency medicine, which has several contributors from highland general hospital in oakland.

note, this is a black & white text/diagrams, so don't go looking for glossy pics.but hey, one less distraction for me.i just need the basic info to take good care of my patients ;)

5-0 out of 5 stars Intro to EM review
Emergency physicians and editors, Mitchell and Medzon, from the Boston U School of Medicine have organized an excellent introductory text for medical students interested in emergency medicine. Not only does their book cover all the key topics in the field, but it does so in an engaging and learner-friendly manner. Many of the authors are recognized experts with decades of experience in their subject areas.

Although the book is designed for medical students, others working in emergency departments will find it useful as well. It's a "good read," well-referenced, comprehensive and user-friendly.In short, Intro to EM is a great addition to the emergency medicine literature. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good as a reference book needs reformatting for kindle
I purchased this after watching a few of Dr Mattu's lectures. The Ecg are very instructive for a practicing emergency physician.Kindle formatting is horrible, as the readings from the Ecg (answers) aren't as easily foundas in a physical book. It takes a big effort to see if you're reading them correctly and therefore limits the ebook's usefulness.I'd definitely recommend the content though.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good information but critically flawed
TheEKGs and interpretations are all first rate, and this text has the potential to be a superb learning guide. However the Kindle edition is severely flawed.

The Kindle editionEKGs are presented in one section and the interpretations many pages later. Why's that a problem? After reviewing an individual EKG, you have to aimlessly wander through the later book to find the appropriate interpretation. They're not linked in any way and you can't use Kindle search to find them. It's totally haphazard. Amazingly dumb!

This is a classic case of a lazy translation of "old" technology (a physical book) into new (Kindle). The author/publisher simply needs to put a link on each EKG to the interpretation and visa versa. That way you can see the EKG then instantly reference the interpretation.

Of course they could re-edit the whole book to put the interpretation on the page following individual EKGs, but the link method would be SO much simpler.

As a result, I would strongly recommend avoiding the Kindle edition until the above problem is fixed. Buy the paperback. That way you can keep a finger in the interpretation section while reviewing the EKGs.

This is the first Kindle text I've ever seen that's so vastly inferior to the physical text.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for practice, not for beginners
I liked this book.It has a bunch of EKGs each with a one sentence history and then an explanation/interpretation of the ECG in the back.If you're trying to figure out how to learn to interpet ECG, look elsewhere (ie Art of Interpretation by Garcia or The Only EKG Book You'll Ever Need by Thaler). But if you're a resident like me and don't want to miss stuff (like PEs, lytes abnormalities, small ST elevations, anything with the intervals) this is a pretty nice book.Bascially, a lot of the ECGs are stuff that you've seen elsewhere but you don't always catch because you don't remember to look for them (like QT prolongation or Type 1 AV Block).Nice book, but not the only EKG book in my collection.Would recommend to fellow residents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great practice for residents!
The way to get better at reading EKG's is to practice, practice, and practice some more! Thus, Dr. Mattu's book is invaluable in providing a multitude of great cases to work with. The explanations are very clear and help build your understanding of EKG patterns in a stepwise manner.

I thought one particular strength are the illustrations in the "explanation" section.Often, with other practice ECG books, they just write out in words what you should be looking for.But Dr. Mattu's book provides examples for certain cases where illustrations help demonstrate the topic.(Example: One practice EKG strip shows LBBB.In the explanation section, they write out the criteria for LBBB.Additionally, they give extra pictures to demonstrate discordance versus concordance between ST segments and T wave morphology in LBBB).If I had read someone describe this phenomenon in words, it would have made it much harder to grasp the concept.Of course, not every explanation comes with an illustration.

This book is a nice way to get good self-studying on EKG's and I think it's an appropriate level for med students or residents looking for more experience and guidance in this topic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
This is a great text to have. Is good for brushing up on your own ECG skills, and high quality images can be readily copied for pimping sessions on rounds. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference material.
Wonderful book and expanded over last edition. Auerbach and his contributors have created a superb reference with up-to-date topics and treatments.
Not only does it address just about every wilderness medicine topic conceivable, but also a few pages addressing search and rescue and survival. The book has a very complete index.

My only negative is that the thin pages are easy to damage (but lighter) and overall size (922 pages) might not be great for tossing in your pack for a hike.

Further, not the best reference for those who don't have medical training/ experience (it is written for medicine professionals).

Overall if you have an interest in wilderness medicine, get this book. If you travel outdoors, take a course that addresses wilderness medicine, and then get this book!

And the big book "Wilderness Medicine" by Auerbach is fantastic, as well!

This is a great resource for any time you leave your house. Evan more so if you leave the paved road.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
After completing my WFR course I wanted the best possible reference to further my knowledge and review to refresh my memory. Every time I grab this book to get advice on a treatment there is either no information or nothing useful. There's info on giving CPR to llamas, but nothing on wound infections, for example. There IS plenty of good stuff, but too many omissions, so I do not recommend this book as a primary reference for wilderness first aid.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book
Great stand alone or companion book to the larger text.Lots of great info. Will travel with it always.Read it on the airplane...the person next to you will keep peeking at it.

    Product Description
Emergency physicians assess and manage a wide variety of problems from patients presenting with a diversity of severities, ranging from mild to severe and life-threatening. They are expected to maintain their competency and expertise in areas where there is rapid knowledge change.

Evidence-based Emergency Medicine is the first book of its kind in emergency medicine to tackle the problems practicing physicians encounter in the emergency setting using an evidence-based approach. It summarizes the published evidence available for the diagnosis and treatment of common emergency health care problems in adults. Each chapter contextualizes a topic area using a clinical vignette and generates a series of key clinically important diagnostic and treatment questions. By completing detailed reviews of diagnostic and treatment research, using evidence from systematic reviews, RCTs, and prospective observational studies, the authors provide conclusions and practical recommendations.

Focusing primarily on diagnosis in areas where evidence for treatment is well accepted (e.g. DVTs), and treatment in other diseases where diagnosis is not complex (e.g. asthma), this text is written by leading emergency physicians at the forefront of evidence-based medicine. Evidence-based Emergency Medicine is ideal for emergency physicians and trainees, emergency department staff, and family physicians specialising in the acute care of medical and injured patients. ...
