2-0 out of 5 stars Time for a New Editor
I used this book for an upper-level environmental economics course. Most of the material in the book was relevant, but tended to be biased towards Kahn's views on the subjects discussed.

Getting through the chapters without cringing was, however, a task in itself. There were more spelling, grammar, and basic syntax errors than I've ever seen in a textbook.Supply and demand graphs (the starting point of all economics) would have mislabeled axes, quotes would be left without close quotation marks, and some of the information presented was just down-right irrelevant. One of my favorites was a review question in one of the later chapters that simply said, "Prove footnote 8."

You would think that this being a THIRD edition, some editors would have found some of the very numerous errors in this book. I'm an undergrad with a weak English background and I was picking them out every few pages.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Economic Approach to Environmental and Natural Resources
While getting a little long in tooth, this text is an excellent introduction to environmental economics. Unlike many texts in this area, the methodology used in this text is quite similar, although less mathmatically rigorous, to presentations used in graduate studies. ... Read more

Product Description

Public Transport is a comprehensive textbook covering the planning of all public transport systems (bus, coach, rail, taxi and domestic air travel) in Britain and other countries with similar systems. The term ‘planning’ is used both in the context of local authority and central government roles and in the work done by transport operators for example, network structures, vehicle type selection.

In addition to the various types of transport, the differing needs of the urban, rural and long distance markets are examined. This restructured new edition gives greater emphasis to service quality and marketing issues as well as covering recent changes in legislation, statistics and research findings.

Public Transport is of particular interest to transport planners in local authorities and consultancies, managers in transport operations, as well as undergraduates and MSc students of transport planning and those studying for the membership examinations of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport.

Product Description
The European Commission requires an impact assessment report for any regulation proposed. This book analyzes the quality of impact assessments and discusses deficits and possible improvements. Based on 30 case studies of impact assessments, an institutional analysis of the relevant actors is conducted, which shows that there are many shortcomings, among them an incentive problem concerning desk officers in the European Commission. The book includes various articles which address controversial problems and possible solutions. It offers a comprehensive overview of the practice of impact assessment in the EC, as well as an institutional analysis of the processes involved and of the checks and balances between politicians and their administration. ... Product Description
The past several decades have witnessed a growing recognition that environmental concerns are essentially property rights issues. Despite agreement that an absence of well-defined and consistently enforced property rights results in the exploitation of air, water, and other natural resources, there is still widespread disagreement about many aspects of America's property rights paradigm. The prominent contributors to "Who Owns the Environment?" explore numerous theoretical and empirical possibilities for remedying these problems. An important book for environmental economists and those interested in environmental policy. ... Read more

Product Description

Global warming is accelerating faster than the ability for natural repair, and environmental stresses are damaging ecosystems, all affecting physical and biological systems on Earth. A new Nasa-led study shows that human activity has caused climate changes resulting in permafrost thawing, acid rain, and lower productivity in lakes as well as increased emissions of greenhouse gases, including CO2, N20, CH4, CF3, and CFC. Marine plants play a vital role in maintaining the balance of marine environments, while serving as a source of food for humankind and important chemical compounds. Microalgae and seaweed have enormous potential for reducing global warming and climate change. During photosynthesis algae grow, draw CO2 from the atmosphere, release oxygen, and produce solar biofuel. Experts in the life of marine plant ecosystems in globally changing environments contributed chapters to this book. The target readers are phycologists, ecologists, atmospheric scholars, conservationists, environmentalists, and ecologically aware laymen.

Editorial Review

Product Description
This volume provides a rigorous and analytical perspective onthe pressing issue of making economic progress consistent withenvironmental conservation. It proposes formal definitions ofsustainability, embeds them in dynamic models and models ofuncertainty, and explores the concepts and their implications. Itpresents a wide-ranging approach to formalizing sustainability andbringing it within the realm of economic theory. Environmental sustainability of growth depends on the interactionsbetween the biosphere and the process of economic growth. The analysisof the dynamics of such a complex system requires the use ofsophisticated dynamic methods in order to take account of the mostrelevant implications for social welfare, such as the relationshipbetween economics and ethics, intergenerational distribution ofresources, and the impact of economic policy on environmentalconservation. The complexity of the object of the analysis involves a high degree ofuncertainty coupled with a serious risk of irreversibility of theconsequences of present decisions. Therefore, environmental risks areoften very difficult to analyze and control. These problems may befaced and solved only by developing new ideas and approaches, some ofwhich are explored in this book. ... Read more

This book describes the state of the art when it comes to theuse of economic instruments in policy making throughout the world. These new and innovative instruments, such as green taxes andtradeable permits, can cut the costs of environmental programsconsiderably and thereby increase the chances that the very necessary-- but also very expensive -- programs actually will be implemented. The book describes and discusses the successes and difficultiesencountered in various countries both industrial, developing andtransitional. It is intended to bridge the gap, not just betweeneconomic theory and environmental issues, but also the gap topractical policy making. With its special combination of environmentalinterest, economic knowhow and its wide geographical coverage, fromthe U.S. to China and from Tanzania to Uruguay or Estonia, it will beof interest to both students of economics, development issues andenvironmental science, as well as to researchers and policy makers innational and international bodies. ... Product Description
Sahelian West Africa has recovered from the disastrous droughts of the 1970s and 1980s. People have learned to adapt to risk and uncertainty in fragile dryland environments. They, as well as global change scientists, are worried about the impact of climate change on these West African drylands. What do the experiences of the last thirty years say about the preparedness for higher temperatures, lower rainfall, and even more variability? Detailed studies on Dryland West Africa as a whole, and on Burkina Faso, Mali and Northern Ghana in particular show an advanced coping behaviour and increased adaptation, but also major differences in vulnerability and coping potential. Climate change preparedness programmes have only just started and require more robust support, and more specific social targeting, for a population which is rapidly growing, even more rapidly urbanising, and further integrating in a globalised economy. This book is the first of its kind with a comprehensive analysis of climate change experiences in West African drylands, with attention for pathways of change and the diversity of adaptation options available. This book is of interest to scientists studying global and climate change, especially dealing with issues of adaptation. Social scientists, economists, geographers and policy makers concerned with West Africa should also read this book. ... Read more

Product Description
This highly anticipated report presents the results of the second assessment of the state Europe's environment made by the European Environment Agency. The book contains a vast quantity of data consolidated in graphs, maps and tables, with full colour throughout. The first report Europe's Environment, the Dobris Assessment, published in 1995, was a landmark report which highlighted twelve prominent European environmental problems, including climate change, biodiversity and waste.

For this second report, which was used by the Environment Ministers of Europe at their fourth ministerial conference in Aarhus, Denmark in June 1998, the mandate was to report progress on the main issues identified in the first assessment. The report highlights that the policy measures that have been taken have not yet produced a significant improvement in the state of the environment overall. Many environmental policies have led to 'end-of-pipe' measures which have resulted in some improvement in some areas, but not enough to cope with increasing infrastructure development, production and consumption.

The most obvious progress in reducing pressure on the environment has been made in those areas where an efficient international framework of action has been established. The absence of any such pan-European framework has delayed progress, even for the assessment of these problems. The response to this report will hopefully lead to a broad political debate about the programmes and targets needed to deal with the main issues that are addressed.

Product Description
This volume presents the recent developments in the field of arsenic in soil and groundwater. Arranged into nine sections, the text emphasizes the global occurrences of arsenic in the environment, particularly on its source, pathways, behavior, and effects it has on soils, plants, water, animals, and humans. It also covers the diverse issues of arsenic in the mining environment, arsenic emanating from hydrothermal springs, and the geochemical modeling of arsenic adsorption to oxide surfaces. Finally, the text includes different cost effective removal mechanisms of arsenic from drinking water using natural red earth, solar oxidation, and arsenic oxidation by ferrrate.

Written in simple English, and few technical terms, the book is designed to create interest within the countries with occurrences of arsenic in drinking water with
