Product Description
In the past decade there has been a rapid increase in waterborne outbreaks of disease associated with viral and protozoan agents, normally in drinking waters that were found to be microbially safe using the Coliform Index. For nearly a quarter of a century indicator organisms, in particular the coliform group, have been used to ensure the microbial quality of drinking water. Currently, world wide legislation to protect consumers is based on these outdated and unreliable tests and while there is considerable concern among scientists over their use, the water industry and regulators continue to place near total reliance on the Coliform Index. This book provides: * the first full account of the nature and applications of the Coliform Index * coverage of new and proposed water quality legislation: * details of emerging pathogens in water: * an evaluation of the role of the "coliform count" in future water quality analysis. It will be an essential tool for water companies at all levels, ... Read more

Product Description
Our modern economies consume annually about 4.6 billion metric tons of crude oil, a third of which is shipped across the oceans. Along the way, about 3 million metric tons are lost into the environment, primarily through handling in ports, but also leakage at sea. So, the threat of a major ecological disaster is always present, for example the Exxon Valdez, Braer and Sea Empress accidents. In addition to oil leakage from tankers, considerable quantities of oil enter the sea from operational discharges or bunker spills. Fortunately, current international agreements, though not always strictly enforced, have greatly reduced the threat of oil pollution.

The oceans are faced with an onslaught from many other sources. The potential for radioactive pollution of the seas, through dumping of nuclear wastes or an accident to a ship carrying radioactive nuclear wastes, has never been absent from the public mind. Recently, people have become more aware of the terrible consequences of a major chemical pollution as well the polluting potential of ships' NOx emissions.

The uncontrolled discharge of ballast waters, too, has become an international problem through the transfer, to various parts of the world, of nonindigenous species which may have detrimental effects on our local ecosystems and human societies.

This dictionary contains terms covering the following fields and subfields:

The shore: morphology and physical description; clean-up at sea and on the shore; fishing activities and marine farming; chemical pollution, containers, the IMDG code and HNS substances; radioactive pollution, dumping and the London Convention;

The ship: pollution and casualty reports; radar, navigation, pilotage, TSS; communications, towing and SAR operations; the sea, wave and weather conditions; people on board ship;

Legal: legal aspect of marine pollution.

Product Description
This second publication in the "AWLAE" series on HIV/AIDS and agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa discusses the gender dimension of HIV/AIDS impact at household and community level. It does so in using the threefold typology of gender specific constraints, gender intensified disadvantages and gender imposed constraints. Special foci of attention include the implications of gender constraints for food security in rural settings, where women are the main producers of food crops as well as the main caregivers; and how cultural norms determine the different options open to women in contrast to men in mitigating the effects of the epidemic. This last point provides the link to the last publication in the series, which discusses agricultural mitigation strategies in the context of HIV/AIDS as a challenge to human development. The text is followed by an annotated bibliography. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, but need updated edition
I agree with the previous reviewer's writeup of this book.It is full of very useful information.

I bought my copy when it came out almost ten years ago, and I am dismayed to find that the authors have not been encouraged to create several more-current editions during all these years.

5-0 out of 5 stars 1991-1992 Green Index: A State-By-State Guide to the Nation'
Bob Hall and Mary Lee Kerr have done an exceptional job compiling useful information in this volume.The book includes the topics of air- and water quality, use and abuse of energy - including automobiles, toxic andhazardous waste, chemicals and other factors that affect us in our homesand workplaces, and governmental policies in place to help clean up ouract.It also includes information and statistics on state parks andforest, fishing and hunting, water-front activities, and other leisure-timetopics.

The information is laid out in an easy-to-read format withmaps, charts, and statistics in each section.Every subject has a separatescale by which the states are ranked as well as an over-all ranking. Another section listing the best and worst environmental aspects of eachstate is also included. If you are wanting one or two quick facts about theenvironmental health of a certain state, these maps and ranking charts area terrific way to find them.Quick and painless.

A list of indicators isgiven for each topic (i.e. air sickness lists 18 indicators and sources),as well.These "indicators" are the different types ofpollution/problems that exist and their sources.In addition to the maps,charts, statistics, and rankings, is a very informative narrative furtherexplaining the research findings.For those of you wanting a little moreinformation, you'll find it here.

This book is a good resource foranyone, whether you're looking for the healthiest place to live or curiousabout the environmental health of your current home.I'd recommend it toanyone concerned about the air they breath or the water they drink.Bewarned, however, the truth can sometimes be painful (and frightening). Perhaps more of us need to be aware of these statistics.

The authors havedone a great service by putting this book out.My only wish is that therewere a more current index.Well, Bob Hall and Mary Lee Kerr, when can weexpect it? ... Read more
