Product Description
This book addresses the issue of how environmental orthodoxies become established, and what the alternative and appropriate approaches for policy-making are. It shows that many of the established orthodoxies are ill-conceived or represent the interests of certain powerful groups. The editors draw together material from 11 key case studies across the continent which use first hand research in different ecological zones.Melissa Leach & Robin Mearns are Fellows at the Institute of Development Studies (IDS), University of SussexPublished in association with the International African Institute North America: Indiana U Press ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A primer in critical environmental analysis
I was a bit surprised to see that this excellent book has not been reviewed before. We have used it as textbook in Masters' courses for several years at University of Bergen. It contains a number of high class articles which in a well documented manner challenge the 'received wisdom' of overdramatised environmental degradation which for long has distorted policy, aid and research in tropical countries. The authors do not take a blind opposite stand, and we see how our students through reading this book have changed their views and become reflected and finally grasped what sound, critical academic thinking entails. ... Product Description

Ranging from prehistory to the present and encompassing the whole of South Asia, this new volume offers the first chronological history of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka from the perspective of the crucial reciprocal relationship between humankind and the environment.

South Asia: An Environmental History shows how the civilizations of this geographically diverse region were formed (physically, ethically, and culturally) by their interactions with the environment—a relationship with particularly strong social and spiritual dimensions because of the interdependence of the predominantly agrarian population and the land. Specific topics range from ancient irrigation techniques and peasant adaptation to the environment, to the impact of imperialism on nature, the effect of post-colonial technology on contemporary life, and the enduring influence of religion on the way South Asian societies address ecological issues.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book
Christopher V. Hill's book is an excellent example of how high level ideas can be portrayed in a completely readable and enjoyable format without sacrificing the content at all.His talent as a writer is clear, as is his high level of expertise on the subject. He does not hide behind overly postmodern or scientific jargon and he presents a very nuanced and cogent account of the environmental history of South Asia. His case studies are phenomenal, and he makes very complex material understandable and clear. I find this book useful for those interested in environmental history (he provides plenty of context and explanation for those who are not experts in this part of the world) and those interested in South Asian history (this presents a perspective not often provided in historical analyses). Thus, this would make an interesting text for an environmental history course or a South Asia course. It is also perfectly accessible for the casual reader. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
The issue of sustainable development is perhaps of more significance to marginalized regions and their communities throughout the world than their more central counterparts. While the world-wide political, sociological and economic processes resltling in globalization and deregulation have increased the marginalization of peripheral areas, the other major global trend, a general degradation of the ecosystem, also affects marginal populations more as their work is more likely to involve the use of natural resources. The fact that these communities suffer more from environmental, economic and social problems also tends to prevent them adopting a sustainable use of these local resources. Using a series of international case studies from both developed and developing countries, this volume explores issues of sustainable development in marginalized regions of the world. In particular, it discusses population development and sustainability, and environment and sustainability from the point of view of regional development, the issue of globalization and sustainability and the role of education in encouraging a sustainable path of development. The contributors focus on the "human" aspects of development, as well as evaluating the usefulness of the concept of "sustainability" in geographical and economic research and provide an insightful overview of the issues that touch sustainability in marginal and critical regions. ... Product Description
This book focuses on two basic concepts: security and desertification in the Mediterranean Region and their linkages. The book is divided into six special topical areas dealing with Linking Environmental Condition to Security; Assessing Regional Conditions; Assessing Land Use Change Relative to Human-induced and Natural Cause; Opportunities for Regional Cooperation and Information Sharing; Soil and Vegetation Monitoring; and Development of Regional Desertification Indicators and Forecasting Techniques. This book provides a multi-lateral forum for cooperation, information exchange, and dialogue among the environmental, development, foreign and security policy communities within the Mediterranean Region and thus may provide a precedent for further cooperation and partnership, including other more advanced conferences and publications, on assessing the condition of the entire region and the subsequent impacts and linkages to environmental security. ... Product Description
The Meaning of Dwelling Features. Conceptual and Methodological Issues relates the research areas of housing preferences and the meaning of a dwelling with each other and with aspects of the means-end approach as applied in marketing research. It results in a conceptual and methodological framework for studying the meaning of preferences for dwelling features. These features are viewed as functional for achieving the goals and values that people pursue. The meaning of dwelling features lies in these functional relationships. The model presented in this study therefore relates preferences for the features of a dwelling to the meaning they have for people. These relationships are called meaning structures. Meaning structures are measured by a semi-structured interviewing technique, which is an adapted version of the laddering technique for measuring means-end chains, and network methods are used for the representation and analysis of these meaning structures.
