The dissertation examines managers’, practitioners’and students’ discourses in enacting ESL curriculum work using perspectives of criticalethnography, where the researcher foregrounds autobiography and community practicesand declares his own values, biases and interests within the research process. As incritical discourse studies (Fairclough 1995), critical ethnography also foregrounds socialinfluences and injustices pertaining, for example, to the role of culture and gender in shapingknowledge and experience. The author employed multiple data collection tools including fivepractitioner and seven student interviews, team meeting recordings, student journal writing, focusgroup meetings with students, documentary analysis, and images.The account of the workplace heconstructs explores ESL curriculum work as the product of discourses within communitiesof practice, which simultaneously create limitations and possibilities. Research in ESLs? perceptions of technology in language learning is still relatively new. In this book, the author examines the perceptions of beginning level ESL international students in a mid-size, pubic university in the Mid-Atlantic region about their experience in computer-assisted language learning. Individual case studies and cross-case study techniques were employed. Data collection involved a survey, interviews, observation, and researcher?s reflective journal. The study raises a number of questions of interest to ESL educators and curriculum developers. What are the Learners? perceptions of their learning experiences in a technology-assisted language learning curriculum? What do they perceive to be the limitations of technology use?
