Product Description

Jacques Derrida argues that the feminist and intellectual Hélène Cixous is the most important writer working within the French idiom today. To prove this, he elucidates the epistemological and historical interconnectedness of four terms: genesis, genealogy, genre, and genius, and how they pertain to or are implicated in Cixous's work.

Derrida explores Cixous's genius (a masculine term in French, he is quick to point out) and the inspiration that guides and informs her writing. He marvels at her skillful working within multiple genres. He focuses on a number of her works, including her extraordinary novelManhattan and her lyrical and evocativeDream I Tell You, a book addressed to Derrida himself and one in which Cixous presents a series of her dreams. Derrida also delves into the nature of the literary archive, the production of literature, and the importance of the poetic and sexual difference to the entirety of his own work.

For forty years, Derrida had a close personal and intellectual relationship with Hélène Cixous. Clever, playful, and eloquent,Geneses, Genealogies, Genres, and Genius charts the influence these two critical giants had on each other and is the most vital work to address Cixous's contribution to French thought.

2-0 out of 5 stars MIddle Eastern & European Genealogy: In The Former Ottoman Empire's Records & Online
I was disappointed when I looked at this book.I expected more information on addresses to where genealogy records could be found in specific countries.Instead it gave basic how to genealogy and talked a lot about genetics (which I did not expect). It basically gave websites to check out ( that I was already farmiliar with) and emails from others stating they were not expert in this field but knew possibly where to find things. It seems to be a referral book of referrals.A beginner may find some of the how to get started information useful. This book will be part of my library, unfortunately I do not think I will be referring to it very much, since I already knew how to look for this information on the internet as mentioned in the book.Perhaps a newbie to the internet would find this book helpful. ... Product Description
The papacy has often resembled a secular European monarchy more than a divinely inspired institution. Roman pontiffs bestowed great wealth on their families and forged strategic alliances with other powerful families to increase their power. Pope Alexander VI (Rodrigo Borgia), for example, forced his daughter Lucrezia into a series of marriages for political reasons. When her marital alliance was no longer advantageous, as was the case in her second marriage, her husband was brutally murdered. Many papal families also intermarried in hopes of forming a hereditary papacy; at least two members of the Fieschi, Piccolomini, Della Rovere, and Medici families served as pope.

Papal families since the early history of the church are fully covered in this comprehensive work. Genealogical charts graphically show the descendants of the popes, presenting in many cases the interrelationships between the papal families and their relationships with many of the leading families of Europe. Detailed histories examine the impact of the papacy on each pope’s family and how each influenced the history of the church. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A good reference book
The book is well written with Genealogy trees interspersed for most of the Popes and their associated Clans. It covers a lot of territory so is lacking in real depth - some of the related trees are in separate parts of the book which isa bit hard to follow. Obviously the earliest Popes have the scantiest information, and perhaps a bit more of the background clan politics could have been added, feuds and the reasons for the feuds, but overall it is well researched and a great reference book to have on hand.Well recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars High Gossip, Academic Style
It's interesting to observe how dry academic language can take thejuiciest gossip, the most outrageous of unfounded rumors, and the mostgruesome tales of betrayal, debauchery, and degeneration and turn it into atedious labor requiring considerable concentration just to keep track ofthe action.

Weakened by unimaginative writing, this tome isprimarily of interest for its wealth of genealogical detail. It includes stories of the popes from the tenth century to the nineteenth, but there has to be a more readable source for that material. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent genealogy book
This is the best all around book on European Genealogy. The chapter on Italy is very complete and up to date.

Flavio Andreatta, President
The Italian Genealogy and Heraldry Society of Canada

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
This book provides excellent genealogical resources to help you find your European ancestors from Portugal to Greece.

Baxter explains some of the considerations that are unique to each country. For example, France has a '100 years law' that limits the information that you can access if an individual's record is within the last 100 years. In Italy, there is a record called the Certificate of Family Genealogy (Certificato dello Stato di Famiglia) that can be especially useful. Research in Scandinavian countries, Wales and some areas of the Netherlands and Germany can be difficult because the surnames often changed with each generation.

Some countries receive more or less coverage in this book. For Albania, where most of the church records have been destroyed, there is just a short history. For other countries, there are lists of records, major family names, archives with addresses that you can write to, and information about how records are kept in that country. Often dates are provided indicating when the country first began census and/or church records.

Overall, this book has great details!

5-0 out of 5 stars The premier guide for the novice genealogist
Now in a completely revised, updated, and expanded fourth edition, Angus Baxter's In Search Of Your European Roots continues to be the premier guide for the novice genealogist seeking trace ancestors in any and every country throughout Europe. The location of each country's national and municipal archives is recorded, in addition to the location of church records, census returns, the system of civil registrations of births, marriages, and deaths, along with pertinent recommendations on finding and using such records as foundling books, orphans' lists, certificates of domicile, guild records, internal passports, confirmation records, and vaccination lists. Here are a highly recommended wealth of telephone numbers, email addresses, fax numbers, and website addresses for most of the major European archives and genealogically relevant organizations. Of special note in this new edition is the attention paid to the changes brought about by German reunification, the break-up of the Soviet Union, and the dismemberments of Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia into smaller political states.

5-0 out of 5 stars The essential guide to your ancestors big boat trip
Unless your ancestors walked the land bridge 10000years ago, you will want this book to learn how you got here. In addition to learning details about emigrating from your particular homeland, you can find out about some European history in general terms that you may have missed in college. Although written before the breakup of the USSR, the section dealing with the former soviet republics gives a hint as to the chances of success you may expect if that was your home. Details such as the data in Canada from the Russian consul, and the small number of embarkation points in European ports should prove to be invaluable as you start your search.

No genealogist should be without this book. ... Read more

THANKyou .

4-0 out of 5 stars King Zog
As a collector of Albanian coins, and specifically King Zog era Albanian coins, I found the book absolutely fascinating.A wee bit academic in it's approach, and lacking illustrations, it is still a MUST read book for anyone interested in the Zog period of Albanian history. If you are familliar with Egyptian history of the King Farouk period, you will see many similarities in their reign. Both kings were adept at playing the diplomatic game for a while, only to end up being jerked around by friend and foe alike.

The last chapter of the Zog book is especially interesting, as it covers the years Zog spent in exile, jumping from country to country.Somewhat of a sad ending, but the book really made the coins in my collection come alive. Coins, which, are probably some of the most beautiful issues from any nation on the planet during the 20th century.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well, it was night when I finished.

Product Description
Aristocratic Redoubt: The Austro-Hungarian Foreign Office on the Eve of the First World War is a study of the nobility who served in the foreign office prior to World War I. Following the lead of historians who are reexamining preindustrial elites in England and Germany, Godsey deals with such facets of aristocratic life as education, wealth, religion, and ethnicity. He contends that although the pre war aristocracy has been stereotyped as frivolous and decadent, the Austro-Hungarian nobility, and thus the monarchy, in fact had great staying power. This work is a social history of the bureaucracy of the Ballhausplatz primarily in the decade leading up to 1914, though it provides a thorough overview of the service during the entire Dualist period. ... Product Description
Using feminist, psychoanalytic, and deconstructionist approaches to Torquato Tasso's 1581 "Gerusalemme Liberata" ("Jerusalem Delivered"), this work argues that Tasso explored alternate modes of writing and reading by reflecting on the genealogical tales of his non-Christian women characters Clorinda, Erminia, and Armida. Through these characters, Tasso explores a series of questions about their relation to the father. By examining the interpretive and ethical questions that arise from the problematic genealogies of Tasso's orphan daughters, the reader should arrive at a better understanding of the relation between the poem's dominant ideology and the stories that it seeks to suspend and displace. ... Product Description
Descended from a long line of doughty warriors and statesmen, William Prince of Orange was born in the Hague during November1650, son of a Dutch father and a Scottish Stuart Princess, eldest daughter of Charles I. Banned at first from succeeding to his hereditary offices by the Act of Seclusion, William's boyhood was rather lonely. His early life was bounded by the Anglo-Dutch naval wars during Cromwell's Protectorate and after the Restoration of Charles II. Acquiring his first military experience during the invasion of Holland by King Louis XIV in 1672, he revealed qualities of heroism and patriotism, refusing to submit to the might of France. He was, above all, a European, having an intimate knowledge of her various peoples. Bryan Bevan, in his new biography of the Prince, discusses William's qualities as a statesman, revealing his many virtues but not silent as to his marked faults. What were his real motives when invading his father-in-law James' kingdom? William III, reigning jointly with Mary II, had an unusual marriage but the deep attachment he felt for her surprised many. However, for the most part, in his private and public life, men friends mattered more to him than female society. William's bravery in battle has never been questioned. but he was never a great soldier. His greatness shone rather in his patience and skill in forging a grand alliance of nations against Louis XIV's ambition to dominate Europe. He was before his time in belief in the balance of power. 207p, 8 b/w pls (Rubicon Press 1997) ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Very amateurish
This "companion" is meant to be a quick-reference compilation of royal and noble lineages from other secondary sources, but it's the sort of thing a junior high school student with a new interest in royal genealogy might put together by copying from an encyclopedia. Family groups included range from major royal houses like the Plantagenets to minor Continental aristocrats like the Genoese seigneurs of Giblet. Arrangement is strictly alphabetical, but that might mean by family surname or by territorial designation (the Staffords of Cherlton are distributed under both), so it's not easy to browse. And, personally, I wouldn't have looked for the seigneurs de Joinville under Genevill. The depth of information provided is also erratic and you can go for twenty or more successively indented lines without running into a date. The index, while lengthy, is amateurish, with headings like "Paris - Merovingian kings" and all saints (the only individuals indexed) filed under "St." Finally, the sources Wells mines for his data are heavy on 18th and 19th century popular histories, medieval writers like Ordericus Vitalis, and such highly suspect recent compilations as Stuart's Royalty for Commoners. He seems to think Cockayne's _Complete Peerage_ is too difficult for easy use and he appears never to have heard of _Europaische Stammtafeln_. ... Read more
