Product Description
Milton, once a parish of Rochester, became an official town in 1802, when Lt. Elijah Horn established the first public meeting house at his home on Plummer’s Ridge. For years a quiet farming community, Milton became a booming mill town when the area’s ice industry experienced tremendous success in the 1880s. The Milton Ice Company, one of five such businesses in town, shipped up to 100 carloads of ice to Boston every day. The town’s location as a halfway mark between Boston and the White Mountains also made it a popular stopping place for travelers. In Milton and the New Hampshire Farm Museum, Sarah Ricker takes us on a visual tour through this historic town, illustrating the town’s progress in rare images that date from the 1880s to the 1930s. View landmarks in the central areas of town, including West Milton, Central Milton, and Plummer’s Ridge, and the various mills that have fostered the community’s economic growth. As you leaf through the pages of this book, you will take an amazing trip back in time to the early days of this close-knit community. Along the way, you’ll discover the Jones Farm—before it became the New Hampshire Farm Museum—and meet such prominent citizens as Robert Edmund Jones, the man who perfected Technicolor. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Small Town, NH History
Arcadia press has a great formula taking historic photos and captions to create local history books. It was interesting seeing the early buildings and people and events of Milton in New Hampshire. The captions supplement the photos but are a bit limited in their information in this Arcadia book.It was arranged in a topical fashion rather than chronologically.

5-0 out of 5 stars Visual History of my Hometown
This book gives an excellent overview of early small town history. The author gives us insight into the lives of Miltons residents and takes us on a visual tour of our hometown. It's wonderful to see how "our"houses have changed over the past century. The chapter on The Newhampshire Farm Museum made me want to tour this amazing set of early farmbuildings again, with new eyes. Miss Ricker made me feel like I knew EmmaJones.Excellent book, Highly recommend. ... Read more

Product Description

Now available for the first time in paperback, Farm House tells the story of the first structure built on the Iowa State University campus. Mary Atherly provides a comprehensive history of the Farm House from its founding days to its role as the center of activity for the new college to its second life as a welcoming museum visited by thousands each year.

Construction on the little red brick house on the prairie began in 1860, two years after the state legislature passed a measure providing for the establishment of the State Agricultural College and Model Farm. In the 1860s, as the only finished house on campus, the building was the first home for all new faculty members, farm managers, farm superintendents, the college’s first president, and their families. In the 1870s, after the college officially opened its doors, the Farm House also served meals to as many as thirty people each day, most of whom boarded there.

As the college grew, the house became home to the deans of agriculture; it was expanded in 1886 and renovated in the 1890s. After the last dean of agriculture moved out in 1970, the Farm House was lovingly restored to its nineteenth- and early twentieth-century appearance. Now a National Historic Landmark, it opened to the public as a museum on July 4, 1976.

This second edition includes a discussion of the archaeological dig of 1991, which carefully excavated the area under the Farm House, and thoroughly documents the extensive renovation and reconstruction of the exterior of the house during the 1990s. New photographs add to the first edition’s rich array of images and a foreword by Gregory Geoffroy, ISU’s president since 2001, adds to its historical content. The history of Iowa’s only land-grant university and its impressive cultural and educational impact on the state and the nation as it evolved from model farm to college to modern multipurpose university is inseparable from the history of the Farm House.

Product Description
Report on excavations at this major palaolithic site which have shed much light on the climate, geology, and flint technology of Quaternary Britain. Thanks to the team's careful sequencing and artefact refits, we now have a clear picture of environmental conditions, and of the palaeolithic life-way in this part of Britain. As John Wymer says, 'we are now beginning to sense Palaeolithic people in a Palaeolithic landscape'. At Barnham, this means a picture of pleasant climate, fresh water complete with pond tortoises, ducks, frogs and fish, nearby woodland, and huge beasts such as elephants and rhinos. Never before has East Anglia sounded so exotic. ... Read more

Excerpt: Didcot Railway Centre, located in the town of Didcot in the English county of Oxfordshire, is based around the site of an old engine shed which became redundant due to the nationalisation of the UK railways, as well as the gradual switch from steam to diesel power. The Great Western Society was offered the use of the site and took it over in 1967. The society has a comprehensive collection of Great Western Railway (GWR) locomotives and rolling stock. There are two short lengths of running track, each with a station at both ends. The shorter of the two lengths the 'branch line' has a wayside halt-type station named Didcot Halt at one end while at the other end is the transshipment shed dating from broad gauge days, when it was used for transferring goods from broad to "narrow" (ie standard) gauge rolling stock and vice versa; it has been carefully moved and reconstructed from its original site nearby. This is where the broad gauge ( in (2,140 mm)) Firefly replica, completed in 2005, can normally be found. The other length of track has a prefabricated concrete station platform (from Eynsham) at one end next to the entrance, and a newly built platform at the other end. Long-term plans include the reconstruction of the Brunel-designed building from Heyford station on this platform. The site retains many original GWR features including the engine shed, turntable pi...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1165279 ... Read more
