5-0 out of 5 stars THE BOOK THAT TURNED THE INDUSTRY UPSIDE DOWN
Had the modeling industry edited this book it never would have gone to press as it is. It reveals the truth about agencies, the little ones, the big ones--and the obvious and not so obvious aspects of an industry that thrives off of young men and women with big dreams. The coverage of modeling in Italy is especially true to life. This book was used as evidence in a court case that changed the way agencies are allowed to treat models, what they are permitted to charge them for inclusion in agency books, for model cards, and even how much of a cut they are allowed to take from a model's earnings. Some agencies went under because of the secrets so innocently revealed in these pages. Lots of excellent practical advice too. Easily the best book in the business even if it is not so recent as some other books on the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Aspiring Model
I am impressed with the amount of information this book gave. It really guides you step by step & made me realize that even though I'm short(5'2), I can still make it in beauty, print, petite & junior/teen modeling.

1-0 out of 5 stars Basic advice.... little real information..
This book had no real advice. Most of it was just common sense advice any person shold know. Seemed geared for 15 year old girls only.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very little substance.
Essentially this book, with its large fonts and generous helpings of superfluous pictures, contained scant information about the modeling industry. The pages are just filled with very shallow and unsubstantiated statements such as, "Your agent will navigate your career, setting in motion a business and promotional plan geared to market fully your unique looks and talent", with no further elaboration.Take for example its chapter on "Ethinic Modeling".It glazes over the subject on how its such a promising area of the industry and tops it off with two short interviews with 2 female black models - 7 pages in all, with plenty of pictures might I add.The interviews themselves were just as disappointing with superficial statements of little substance that only glamorizes the modelling industry. Above all, the author insults the reader's intelligence by shamelessly pitching the Wilhelmina modeling agency almost every other page.In fact, the entire book's message boils down to - try to sign up with an model agency (no less the Wilhelmina) and expect a 20% commission rate. Those who have rated this book 5 stars are obviously the author or Wilhemlmina employees.

2-0 out of 5 stars this is why models have management
Like many models getting started in the business, I didn't know which way to turn. The hardest part is to qualify clients and to only work with those that will keep the image of you that you would like to promote in the market place. This book really doesn't outline this aspect of the industry.Good management is what got me a blossoming career in this business. Thanks to Digital White Boy Management, http://www.digitalwhiteboy.com , I've made it in this industry. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars All the basics of what it takes to become a model
It's fitting that art and crafts book publisher Lark Books should then move to a book on photographic modeling, Complete Guide For Models: Inside Advice From Industry Pros: it's a logical transition and offers the power of an art book publisher paired with the expertise of a fashion photographer and fashion editor. Models will learn all the basics of what it takes to become a model for the artist; from posing for commercial print ads to special opportunities for men, women and child models. Complete Guide For Models could have easily been featured in our 'Business and Careers' section, but is profiled here so artists and art library holdings will catch sight of it: it's an important, recommended instructional guide for the reference collections of artschool, artists and sculptors.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Loved the interview with Supermodel, Carmen Dell'Orefice.
It was really informative hearing from a model who has modeled for 50+ years. I recently saw Carmen Dell'Orefice in a runway show in NYC, and she looks great. Great interview, great photos.

5-0 out of 5 stars I learned alot from this book
I live in a small town in California, and i want to be a model. I always dreamed of going to NYC and being a runway model. I asked a few of the agencies in nearby towns, but they didnt know much about NYC. I got this book, and it answered alot of questions i had about modeling. The modeling schools near me charged alot of money, to take classes, but i learned just as much from this book. I can't wait to go to NYC now. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource - a must have
This book is amazing and a great resource! It's easy to read and, contains a wealth of information which is presented in a way that is practical and user friendly. As I support and assist my daughter in pursuing her dream of working in the entertainment industry, the tips, techniques and suggestions contained in "How To Become a Successful Model," have been invaluable. We take the book to every audition and, after only a couple months of obtaining the book, my daughter was signed by one of the top talent agencies in San Francisco. She has been working and having more opportunities than before. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Models at All Stages
How to Become a Successful Commercial Model is a valuable resource for models at all stages of their careers. It gives aspiring models valuable advice on breaking into the business and the realities of the job.It also gives working models fresh insight on how to grow professionally and expand their careers.

I've been a commercial print model for five years. I took Mr. Marcus' advice on self promotion. I really appreciated those tips because it was something I had never considered before. But since I started marketing and promoting myself, I've seen doors open in ways I never imagined.

5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable resource for real actors and actresses
After winning Grand Overall Actor at AMTC Winter 2009, I was signed by three agencies in Tennessee, Georgia, and Florida. I began doing auditions one week after I signed with my first agency. I have to say this: After doing 18 auditions in the last 5 months, NOTHING prepared me for these auditions like this book! It was an INVALUABLE resource to me. There is no fluff in this book. Only what you absolutely NEED to give your audition your BEST SHOT. I walked into my first audition feeling like it was my 20th. Thank you for providing a real and practical resource to aspiring actors and actresses!

2-0 out of 5 stars Awkward Poses
I purchased this book based on the reviews and am disappointed. The model on the cover is the same one posing in the book. If the cover pose looks awkward there is more of the same inside the book. The poses are amateurish, improperly placed, hands, arms, feet, and dangling legs abound throughout this book. I was expecting the posing to be more polished and professional (like the fashion magazines). The book gets 2 stars for tips given in the beginning of the book. Posing and facial expressions get a FAT ZERO!

5-0 out of 5 stars Full of great poses and tips for photographers and models.
I bought this with the hope that it would help me when working with new models.Since I'm relatively new photographing people there are times when I get stuck on poses, especially with new models.Luckily this book came in the day I was shooting two new models so we glanced over it and talked about basic concepts. With the pictures and the simple explanations our shoot went off without a hitch. They were able to visualize what we were trying to do.I would highly recommend any photographer have this in their library.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great tool for working with inexperienced models
This saves me a lot of time having to explain poses for newer models. Plus, I saw some new poses that I will add to my repertoire. For the price, the print quality is less than spectacular, thus the minus one star. However, still a great buy and I highly recommend it.

Note: Designed primarily for models, it does not explain much about the theory or reasons behind the poses. For photographers looking for more information and basic posing principles, I highly recommend Nigel Holmes'The Pink Pocket Poser: The Glamour Photographers Posing Guide (WARNING! For some, the drawings and humor maybe explicit) and The Portrait Photographers Posing Guide: How to pose people for portraits.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great easily portable posing guide
This is a great book to bring along on a shoot for ideas. My use of the book, which obviously affects my rating, is as a begining photographer looking for a portable modeling guide for women that have never modeled and need pictures to illustrate for them what to do.

The book is intended for the model and not the photographer but is easily used by both. The first 20 pages cover modeling basics, posing, what to bring and do before a shoot. This book isn't as thorough as Billy Pegram's "Posing techniques for photographing model portfolios."While that amazing book is a manual on posing, this is more of a picture book to generate ideas for posing. This is where the book does a great job. There are many ideas you'll get and ability to illustrate poses. The book is small enough to pack along.Keep in mind the intent of the two books and you won't be dissappointed.

Most of the pictures have the model in a leotard or fully covered, though some are in underwear. This helps if you have someone that you wouldn't want to expose revealing pictures to.At around $15.00 it's great for what I use it for.

The only negatives are the pictures are b/w, low dpi, sometimes lacking in texture and contrast and small but easily viewable. There are several pictures on a given page though.

In summary, it was a good purchase for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Perspective on Both Sides of the Camera!
A quick, but concise read on outlining the considerations and expectations for both the photographer and model! This guide essentially prepares the photographer and model for the actual shoot and will virtually eliminate "wasted time" determining the direction and focus of the shoot. In addition, the incredible number of captured poses will give the photographer a wealth of choices in preparation for the shoot.All-in-all, a great reference and a "must have" for photographers and models alike! ... Product Description
Black models are living proof that beauty is more than skin deep.

Skin Deep brings readers face to face with some of the most beautiful women in the world: Black models. For the past 50 years they have redefined beauty, fashion, and style in dramatic ways. Each era would exalt its star models: Dorothea Towles, Helen Williams, Naomi Sims, Beverly Johnson, Iman, Naomi Campbell, and Tyra Banks, among them. Less well known are the many other talented, elegant women who enjoyed careers as well. At every level of achievement, however, they all confronted challenges testing their courage, endurance, and integrity. How they succeeded - and sometimes failed - is thecompelling essence of
Skin Deep.

Only an insider could tell the story of Black models with the authenticity it deserves. Barbara Summers, a Ford model for 17 years, spent a decade interviewing dozens of models and fashion professionals on three continents to record their experiences. With insight and flair, she gives voice to familiar faces. With an artist's eye, she pored over hundreds of images by the world's most acclaimed photographers to select the more than 250 pictures that make this volume a landmark publication.Black models transformed the fashion industry.

Popular culture around the world would neverbe the same again. Beyond advertisements for clothes and cosmetics, they projected visions of a far more precious but far less tangible product: freedom. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazon Review
Thanks for a wonderfully preserved reasonably priced book.
Your shipment was received well within normal expectations.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ambitious, but ultimately disappointing
The author has spent admirable energy collecting images, interviews, and historical data. But she has been ill-served by her editor and publisher. The text and images are made incoherent by not having been shaped, as if the author's note cards had spilled on to the page in no particular order (a simple chronological narrative might have been best). Sadly, the result is a book about beauty that is not beautiful. The publisher seems not to have hired a book designer; the images neither flow esthetically nor relate integrally to the text. Even the index shows lack of care for the material, with the font unadjusted to distinguish between pages with images and those containing only text. Black beauty deserves better than this. And yet, since this is the only book of its kind, it is still worth buying... It is a joy to see these fantastic women all in one place. Kudos to Barbara Summers for introducing them to each other and to us.

5-0 out of 5 stars Compelling, comprehensive and enlightening
This is a first and the most compelling, comprehensive and enligtening book on the subject.I applaud the author and publisher for their vision, tenacity and courage. A must for every library.Kudos!!

1-0 out of 5 stars It is called a writing class and the author missed it.
I was very excited to read this book and I was highly disappointed. The content was great but the editor and author needs to be slapped. The layout was ridiculously confusing, the chapters had no flow, pictures didn't correspond with the stories, some of the interviews bordered on the foolish, etc.... The was a two paragraph mention about black male models.what about children models? What about the effects of we are portrayed in advertisements through history? Where is the history? A chronological timeline? I've read articles in white mags about black models that gave more information that this book.Don't buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars MORE THAN BEAUTIFUL! EXCEPTIONALLY GORGEOUS!
I loved this book from front to back. It gave me an inside perspective on how black models are treated in the fashion industry. After being brain washed and white washed by dozens of "Vogue,""Glamour," and "Cosmo" magazines, I had lost sight ofhow beautiful and elegant black models/women are. This is unfortunate buttrue and can only account for the racist attitudes and standards thatWestern society (especially America) has against ethnic (African, Asian,Latin, and Native American Indian) beauty. Ethnic beauty is copied andexploited. You can see it in every page of the most popular fashionmagazines. I also readEileen Ford's comment about this book. She waswrong wasn't she. Thank you for writing this book Ms. Summers. It isunquestionably a work of art. ... Read more

They provide industry-specific examples, industry-specific tips and cautions, and industry-specific strategies based on real-world resumes.
