4-0 out of 5 stars kids books
i want to keep hard copy book alive and well. dont let the printed page die.
i hope this will be the start of my daughters life long book collection.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Classic for Kids
I grew up on these books and loved them as a kid. I had the opportunity to share one of the stories to someone during the summer. The 7 year old loved it so much, i had to purchase a set so that he could enjoy what i enjoyed growing up. The adventures of Frog and Toad are funny. It is also great when you are learning to read books independently.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved it then, love it now.
I had two of these books as a kid and loved them.As an adult, I enjoy reading them to my young kids.I have laughed out loud several times at them, particularly at some of the endings. The stories (five per book) are fairly short (about 12 pages each).Frog and Toad have fun and distinct personalities, and there are small lessons to be learned from their friendship and the things they do.I was very pleased to see these books and to get them for what I consider to be a very good price.I'll be buying this set for my siblings for Christmas.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beloved By a Seven Year-Old Boy
My son purchased these books with his own money (I felt they were well below his current reading level, and bought him more appropriate ones). He reads them often and loves them.We read them at bedtime still, and he'll just pick them up when he's just got a short time to read.

I find them amusing, sweet, and fun.Great children's books.

5-0 out of 5 stars My 2 year old requests them by name!
And that really is all there is too it.

The stories are simple and fun, with some positive 'life lessons' and a little humor. There enough in this collection to keep the reader (that would be in this case) from growing numb with boredom and makes a perfect excuse to delay bedtime

We read at this house..a lot. My 2 1/2 year old son is right there. Sure, Thomas the train and Olivia get asked for as well, but at times Frog and Toad are almost an obsession! This weekend I read all three books in this box set to him and he was mesmerized.

Honestly, what more can you want for a toddlers childrens book?

The best of friends

From writing letters to going swimming, telling stories to finding lost buttons, Frog and Toad are always there for each other -- just as best friends should be.

Amazon.com Review
Frog and Toad agreed: it was a perfect day for a swim. AndFrog was kind enough not to look at Toad in his bathing suit, perToad's request. But when the swimming was over, a crowd had gatheredto see Toad in his funny-looking suit, and neither Frog nor Toad couldmake them leave.

The endearing pair hop along through five enchanting stories, lookingfor lost buttons, greeting the spring, and waiting for mail. Theirgenuine care for each other makes Frog and Toad two of the finestamphibious role models around. Young readers will chuckle with Frog asthey watch Toad's silly efforts to make up a story. And they willapplaud Toad as he finally wakes up after hibernating allwinter. The fifth story will warm the hearts of any would-be penpal--or anyone who has ever known what it's like to have a true-blue(or green) friend.

Arnold Lobel's comfortable brown and green illustrations invite anddelight every reader, setting the tone for warm, funny stories aboutfriendship. A Caldecott Honor Book and finalist for the National BookAward for Children's Literature, this installment of Lobel's classicFrog and Toad series is another essential addition to any youngster'sshelf. If you need even more of Frog and Toad, don't miss Frog and ToadTogether, Frogand Toad All Year, and Days with Frog andToad. (Ages 4 to 8) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars True Friendship Knows No Bounds
This book demonstrates that differences are no barrier to friendship. Frog and Toad are true friends with emphasis on friends. They accept each others differences and share the joy of each other's company.Five short tales that can be enjoyed time and time again. This reviewer loved the story of A Lost Button with its surprise ending. This is a book that will be taken off the shelf and read time and time again.

4-0 out of 5 stars just okay for us
The only issue i have with this book is that is was way too easy for my 1st grader who is 7 to read.He read it in a matter of minutes.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK FOR KIDS.
My daughter loves it even though its her first book in which words predominate on the page. It actually plays nicely with Coraline because of the lost button story...

3-0 out of 5 stars Unattractive artwork, caution on first two stories
The majority of the short stories of Frog and Toad are good but the first two were odd. The first one basically encourages lying. And the second story shows Toad banging his head on the wall which I thought..."great thing to show a child to do"!

The artwork was dull, small and not really appealing to my children.I did like several of the stories but it did not hold the attention of my kids that long.

I am starting to think all the wonderful reviews are from sellers trying to sell the book. Yes, it has some good points but it is not an award winning book??!

5-0 out of 5 stars Friends
In this installment of Frog and Toad, it focuses on friendship.Charming short stories and nice graphics compliment each other well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What is a "School and Library Binding"?
Please let me start by saying the stories and illustrations are excellent, thoughtful and canny in a way that children and adults immediately relate to.

Having said that, let me now express my frustration at the description of the physical product. For those not in the know, what is a "School and Library Binding?"Is it hardback?Paperback?Something in between?Would it kill somebody who is selling this to include a single descriptive word about what you're actually getting here?

Boy, it sure would be nice, for a series of books that are accepted as classics, to be able to buy all three of them in the same hardbound format.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice story
My 6 year old really liked the book. Its a challenge for a 6 yr old.. so perhaps 7 or 8 yrs would ve been more suitable.

5-0 out of 5 stars my kids have asked for more Frog and Toad books.
My kids asked me for more Frog and Toad books for them to read. How can I not. They are so much fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best...
My grand-dughters and I love the Frog and Toad stories.Anyone with 2-5 year olds will be captivated by the deightful stories, subtle life lessons and just plain fun with the whole Frog and Toad series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Frog and Toad for Grown-ups
My daughters loved the Frog and Toad books and I always enjoyed reading with them. I purchased the book because of the story about planting a garden. It's PERFECT for new gardeners. I looked for it years ago when a good friend started gardening but couldn't find it. When my kids were reading Frog and Toad, they were short, individual books rather than several stories in one book. A young mother recently told me to look for the story in a larger book and I was able to find it. It's every bit as good as I remembered it. Great books for kids, good for grown-ups too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Frog and Toad are still great together
This 1972 book is still a delight to read to your child and have your child read to you. Frog and Toad are together in five featured stories including A List, The Garden, Cookies, Dragons and Giants, and The Dream.

The stories are simple, but even in this world of computer games, Pixar and pop-up books, they catch a child's attention. A List features Toad doing his first To Do list. It is a nice way to talk to a child about being organized, but being flexible if things go wrong (Toad's list blew away, but he couldn't run after it because chasing his list wasn't on his list). The Garden is good about illustrating patience while watching seeds grow. Cookies is a funny story about will power. Dragons and Giants illustrates friendship and bravery. And the last story, The Dream is another story about friendship.

Whether you use the stories as springboards for teaching tools or just to enjoy, they are wonderfully and simply illustrated and the story flows gently.

5-0 out of 5 stars Frog and Toad Together-A Must Have!
Classic book to have in your child's library!
Great short stories that have wit and humor for all ages to enjoy!
I loved all Frog and Toad stories growing up and now my sons seem to love them just as much!
A Must Have and it won't be a regret!

5-0 out of 5 stars Love Frog and Toad
The Frog and Toad series teaches kids simple lessons with easy stories and cute graphics. I, myself, like to read them out loud to the children. It teaches values and consequences of how yo interact with others, but does so in an entertaining way.

5-0 out of 5 stars great memories
I had been looking for this Frog and Toad book for at least a year after getting some of the newer ones for my kids.I was so excited to find this original one from the 70's. The pictures brought back so many memories of reading with my mom.As always, Frog and Toad are funny and sarcastic, making for great classic stories. ... Read more

Product Description

Friends every dayGood friends like Frog and Toad enjoy spending their days together. They fly kites, celebrate Toad's birthday, and share the shivers when one of them tells a scary story. Here are five funny stories that celebrate friendship all day, every day.

Amazon.com Review
The five simple chapters in Arnold Lobel's Days with Frogand Toad say more about the rewards of friendship than any adulttome ever could.Frog and Toad, the amiable amphibian duo, fly kites, clean house, and tell ghost stories together. And, in a surprisinglysophisticated, yet perfectly easy-to-grasp, segment, they even learnabout the value of being alone. Frog is ever-so-slightly moresagacious than Toad; his gentle and supportive way with his chum showsthat personal variances don't have to get in the way of friendship. Onthe contrary: vive la différence! Arnold Lobel'sillustrations in warm frog and toad tones create the perfectatmosphere for this wise and touching early reader, an ALA NotableChildren's Book.

Lobel has created four "Frog and Toad" stories for the"I Can Read" books, an immensely popular series with largetype, abundant illustrations, and ample spacing that first launchedwith Else Holmelund Minarik's Little Bear. Fans ofthe foot-flapping friends won't want to miss Frog and Toad AreFriends (a Caldecott Honor book); Frog and ToadTogether (a Newbery Honor book); and Frog and Toad AllYear (an ALA Notable Children's Book). Children will beoverjoyed to spend an evening--or days on end--with these affectionatefriends. (Ages 4 to 8). --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Stories of Frog and Toad
I bought these books for my daughter as I had enjoyed them as a child. She loved them immediately and wanted to read all the stories in one sitting. These are great for bedtime as you can choose to read one or two stories then tuck in.The quality is great; the paperback is very sturdy.Right now my daughter is too young to read them on her own, but as she hears the stories she has started to recite some of the dialogue or make up what she sees in the illustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this book
My daughter and I love this book and wonders if you have anymore of this series.Let me know - Thank you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very cute book.
Purchased for my grandsons and they love it! It's such a sweet book that I don't mind reading it to them again and again. Plus, since the stories are interesting, they are really motivated to try and read it themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get together with Frog and Toad !
It was terrific for my son in the '70s, and great for my grand-nephew in 2009! Enjoy the friends' daily routines (Toad gets organized by crossing off lists) and their romps through bravery escapades, gardens and dreams. Toddlers will love it, and it stands the test of time!

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost happy!
The book said it was in new condition, but there was a note to soemone in ink in the front.Otherwise, very satisfied.

5-0 out of 5 stars Creative, thoughtful, timeless stories
I read these stories as a child, and now I'm reading them to my own kids.I'm delighted that they love them as much as I did, because I think these stories convey a sense of true friendship through unique storytelling and a comforting pace. The quirks of each story continue to delight us, no matter how many times we have read them!

5-0 out of 5 stars nice adventures
I don't know what it is about Frog and Toad that's so great. It's like every word they say is laid out so perfectly and the stories are always so simple to understand, and yet, so much fun for children of all ages.I honestly wonder if my interest in walking around searching for and collecting toads came from this book. It's certainly a possibility.Anyway, enjoy these books.Buy them for your children and I hope they experience the same amount of enjoyment that I once did.

5-0 out of 5 stars Frog and Toad - Warm stories to snuggle with
My seven year old son is not nearly as thrilled with reading as his mother, but at last we have found a collection that he can't get enough of.Frog and Toad are the perfect bedtime characters. The stories are simple and sweet, and my son tells me that they make him feel "warm and cozy".The reading level is appropriate for him as a second grader. And even my four-year-old will settle in to listen to the latest tales of Frog and Toad. This is a must-have collection!

5-0 out of 5 stars Why do I love Frog and Toad?
Why do I love Frog and Toad? I'm not really sure. Not much really happens in these stories. The illustrations are beautiful but rather small. The eponymous friends carry on their friendship through mild misunderstandings and misadventures, always ready to forgive each other and forget. These gentle stories are among my favorite kids' books. I have fond memories of Frog and Toad from my childhood, and I never tire of re-reading them to my 4-year-old daughter. She seems to like them, too. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as delightful
We love Lobel's books.Frog/Toad/Grasshopper etc. are fabulous. This book is not like the others.I'd like to return it.

5-0 out of 5 stars What an adorable book
I purchased this as a gift for my friend to read to her baby. She loves frogs and toads so I thought it would be well-accepted.I love the little rhymes. They are fun, but send a good message too.I think she will enjoy reading them and her son will enjoy them as he gets older.
A nice hardbound book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A silly book celebrates the singing of the amphibians
Arnold Lobel's THE FROGS AND TOADS ALL SANG receives fine color drawings by Adrianne Lobel as it tells of singing frogs and toads in rhyming stories. A silly book celebrates the singing of the amphibians, with warm color drawings throughout.

5-0 out of 5 stars These little miniature portraits of frogs and toads would be the perfect compliment to the original Frog and Toad books!
Frog and Toad were a delightful duo that many children first learned about in the "I Can Read" series of books. You may have learned about being a best friend through this books all the while laughing at their antics. These classic books are still around, but now the discovery of a "lost" book will thrill you.No, we won't see a full story, but rather some wonderful, whimsical rhyming stories.

A Toad Was Feeling. . .

A toad was feeling
Sad and grumpy
Because his skin
was rough and lumpy.
"My skin is bad,"
Said he."I'll hide it.'
He bought a coat
and jumped inside it.
"And now," he said,
"I do not worry . . .
Outside I'm nicely
Soft and furry."

I love these little miniature portraits of frogs and toads and think they would nicely compliment the original Frog and Toad books. In the front of the book Adriane Lobel discusses how these little "stories" were lost and rediscovered. She also briefly discusses her father, Arnold Lobel, and how she had to "shake [herself] of fear and to produce watercolors with the same freedom and effortlessness that approached" that her father used to create.I think she did a marvelous job and this book is worth adding to your timeless collection of Lobel books!

5-0 out of 5 stars Silly & Hilarious! Perfect for bedtime reading.
Great reading fun for small children. As a dad of a 3-yr old book critic, I'd say that both she and I recommend it!

See Also: Finklehopper Cheers-another great story, but not as catchy as the 1st-still, one I am happy we own.

4-0 out of 5 stars Has a good lesson in the story kids will love
Finklehopper Frog, originally published in hardcover, is being released by Tricycle Press in paperback.

Author Irene Livingston has published over a hundred children's stories and poems and lives in Vancouver, British Columbia. Brian Lies has illustrated over a dozen children's books and lives in Massachusetts.

Wow! Everyone in Finklehopper Frog's neighborhood seems to be involved in a fitness craze and have taken up jogging. Finklehopper Frog thinks exercise is a good idea and purchases a jazzy jogging suit with pink and purple dots. He gets dressed and hits the trails--hopping.

His confidence continues to diminish as other joggers snicker and laugh at him. He's feeling pretty awful until a bunny convinces him that his unique style is `a good thing' and he doesn't have to feel bad about it.

The message of Finklehopper Frog is a good one and is delivered in a manner that small children will easily understand. They will giggle at the pictures and get caught up in the verse. The illustrations are delightful and add to the story.

Armchair Interviews says: Children will enjoy Finklehopper Frog and want to read it again and again. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Resource on All U. S. Frogs
This book is an excellent and up-to-date (as of 2010) resource on frogs of the United States and Canada.(The title says North America, but frogs found exclusively in Mexico and other parts of Central America, regions sometimes considered part of North America, are not included.)The photography is outstanding. The text devotes equal space to all species of U. S. and Canadian frogs, including introduced species, obscure species, and Mexican species whose ranges extending slightly into the United States.Note, however, that the book is best considered not as a primary source for identification; a field guide like Peterson's is better for that purpose.Rather this book is for those who want more extensive information and imagery than can be found in the typical field guide.

The only serious problem that I have with the book is its physical structure. It is oddly-shaped, 8 1/2 inches tall by 9 inches wide, which makes it hard to fit on some book shelves.Even worse, the covers are made of extremely thin, floppy cardboard. They don't look as if they will stand up well to use, and they don't seem to provide any protection to the CD, which is in a pocket inside the back cover. It might be a good idea to get a separate, hard case for the CD rather than storing it in the book.

Despite the structural problems of the book, it is still worth the money for anyone interested in frogs.I just wish the the publisher had done a better job with the physical elements.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning and easily worth twice the price
I picked up this book mostly for the cd of calls because I figured the book would be a small and typical quick guide type of book that I've already seen. Boy was I surprised when I got this book. First of all the book is not small at all and is more like a textbook and the info for each species is succinct with a distribution map for each. Secondly the photographs are the best I've ever seen without exception. Each species not only has basically an 8X10 inch photograph but I was shocked to see that when you turn the page some species have another two 8X10 photos.
Each photograph is so well composed and portrays that species so well that you will want to frame it and put it on your wall.Don't forget to read the text though because it points out how the species' color is subject to change, for example the Cuban Treefrogs picture shows it as being green when in the field I usually see them as gray.
My only criticism is I think discerning between two close species like the Northern/Southern Cricket frogs will be very hard using this book alone as it doesn't mention that a good way to tell is by the banding pattern on the back of the hind legs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable
Just by itself this book would be worth the cost. The images are absolutely stunning. The CD is a bonus! It's fantastic to be able to listen to the CD and match it with images in the book and finally know what has been making all that noise outside our apartment all these years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book on frogs
This book is really the best single field guide to frogs and toads that I know of.The photo illustrations are superb both scientifically and aesthetically, and the CD rom of the songs is uniquely valuable. This is a "must have" book for any naturalist interested in amphibians of North America, and it really sets a new standard.

5-0 out of 5 stars everything and more
For a teenie little book and CD this has a bunch of info and is just what I wanted and needed to identify the frogs and toads I was hearing at night.Nice photos and descriptions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nerdy fun for anyone
The sound is great, photos are fine, and the text is clearly written.I'm not a biologist, just curious about the sounds in the woods around my garden in the evening. This is helpful (and only mildly embarrassing to be caught listening to....) It would have been helpful if the text noted whether the calls were heard during the day or night. That is mentioned for some animals but not others.Otherwise, no complaints.

3-0 out of 5 stars Field AID
This is great to learn the sounds of frogs and toads before going in the field to look for them or catch them. It was very helpful to recognize all that I might be hearing when i went into the field.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love these froggies!
Two thumbs up!The guidebook pictures are clear, the descriptions are detailed and include information on where each species can be found (what region of the US and what type of habitat). Each track on the CD includes an introduction with both the common and Latin name of the species. Now I know exactly who I've been hearing outside. After the individual sounds tracks, the author also shares some "combo" tracks with more than one species and describes the conditions and exactly what is going on with the frogs/toads in question.I thought this was really helpful because when encountered in the wild you typically don't find a single animal on its own.It was also entertaining, as when he shared the "frog with a stutter", turf wars and mixed species frog calls. My whole family enjoyed this CD and it was a great addition to our homeschool biology studies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shame on the translator!
I am devastated to see that the translation is incorrect! "Sapo" is a Rana (Frog), and Sepo is actually the Sapo (Toad)! This is actually important because scientifically Sepo has the characteristics of a Sapo (a toad) he is slower and more lazy than "Sapo" who is actually a rana (frog). Frogs are quicker than toads. They should have been named "Rana" (Frog) and "Sapo" (Toad), and Sepo should be the one named Sapo.
I just did a unit on frogs and toads and noticed that in the English version there are a lot of factual similarities to characteristics of frogs and toads but then when I read it in Spanish I was so upset to see they had been misnamed. I actually went through and scratched out and switched the names myself so the kids won't be confused. I wish I could communicate this translation mishap to Arnold Lobel who seems to take care in including important details in writing about his characters. This is a great book to use when teaching about Amphibians and teaching across the curriculum, however if you want to be scientifically correct you will have to do what I did and change the names yourself. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great For Readers Theatre!
If you work with children in literature or drama, this is a GREAT book on which to build a readers theatre performance. There are a good half dozen characters with fairly equal emphasis and short lines. The parts can be played by either boys or girls, and the campy humor can be enjoyed by both kids and adults. I've used it for performance for several years and it's always a big hit.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spy, Spy, Who's Got the Spy?

Jane Yolen is an award-winning children's book author as well as a writer of adult science fiction and fantasy. She's earned the Caldecott-given for the most distinguished picture book, the Nebula-given to the most distinguished writing in the field of science fiction and fantasy, the Golden Kite-given by the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, and the World Fantasy Award. She's written seven Commander Toad Adventures, including COMMANDER TOAD AND THE LONG VOYAGE HOME, COMMANDER TOAD AND THE PLANET OF THE GRAPES, COMMANDER TOAD AND THE SPACE PIRATES, and COMMANDER TOAD AND THE BIG BLACK HOLE.With dozens of books written in many genres, Jane Yolen is a great author to introduce to young readers.

COMMANDER TOAD AND THE INTERGALACTIC SPY is great fun to read to a young reader with a well-developed imagination. The wordplay sounds great to the ear, and the various puzzles, mysteries and problems the author summons in just a few short words pulls those young listeners in.Even reading the book as an adult is good entertainment, though better if shared with a child. The illustrations by Bruce Degen complement the story, showing the various antics and fun emotions of Commander Toad, Mr. Hop, Lieutenant Lily, Jake Skyjumper, and Doc Peepers.

The Commander Toad series, all seven books, is recommended for imaginative young readers who have already been exposed to STAR WARS, STAR TREK, and various other science fiction based television shows and movies.Jane Yolen is one of the most entertaining authors for young minds out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb space adventure for kids
My two sons, ages 4 and 8, absolutely LOVE the Commander Toad series. Our library has six of them, all of which we have read. They beg me to read one a night. _Intergalactic Spy_ is fun to read and fun to listen to.

The crew must travel to the planet of Eden, which is full of flowers, in order to pick up Commander Toad's cousin, the "Master of Disguise." But in order to safely bring him onboard their spaceship, they must first figure out *which* monster he is.

Several silly puns and a humorous plot. Borrows some terminology from Star Wars and Star Trek. Highly recommended! We have been disappointed by only one of these books, the rest are fantastic! Your 8+ year old may be able to read them without help. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Make Up The Story As You Go Along
This wordless book is just precious and perfect for little boys. My sons and I made up the words to it over and over and enjoyed it for years. They are grown now, but it was certainly one of their favorites. I'm a grandma who will read it to my grandkids and great-grandkids.

All of the books in this series are absolutely wonderful. The illustrations are amazing.Highly recommended for today's generation of nature deficit children.

5-0 out of 5 stars beautiful series - I want to collect them all
This is the first book we got in the Take-Along-Guide series and we love it and plan to collect them all. The illustrations are lovely (although I find photos easier for a true guide book) but the brief diet and habitat notes were perfect for my 4yr son. The size guide and ruler on the back of the book were great to help my son get a feel for the differences in the species. Great for young scientists and explorers (I would say 4-8yr). Older children and adults will probably want more info than this book provides.

I also recommend the One Small Square books by Donald M. Silver. [..]

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent learning tool!
I purchased 5 books of this series for my five year old daughter for Christmas, as she wanted a "field guide" like her older sisters when exploring our 45 acres of woods. After reviewing these books before giving them, we decided to use them as part of our science program for our home school. These books have bright and colorful pictures, short accurate explanations of the animal, their habitat, eating habits, and even some of the popular anecdotes that go along with the animal. It has the appropriate warning for studying certain animals and tips on studying nature in general. What we enjoy most is that many of these animals can be found in our back yard to furthur study. Each book deals with three types of animal, such as Frogs, Toads, and Turtles. They are separated into sections dealing with each type.At the end of the section is a wonderful hands-on project the child can basically do on their own within the recommended age group (9-12) or with some assistance for a younger age group like my daughter. My 5 year old begs us to read these books to her and loves the projects.I highly recommend this book and others in the series for those who want their children to learn about nature and how to respect it. ...
