Extractions: Background Information The purpose of the Biodiversity Planning Support Programme (BPSP) in view of the above, is to strengthen the capacity of parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) to prepare and implement National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) in response to Article 6 of the CBD. While developing and implementing GEF supported Biodiversity Enabling Activities, parties have identified a number of difficulties whose resolution goes beyond the technical and managerial support provided by the GEF Implementing Agencies. These include inadequacy of existing information, materials and guidelines; a scarcity of appropriate expertise and experience; and difficulties in dealing with the complex and multi-sectoral nature of biodiversity planning. The BPSP draws on the full range of national and global experience to develop and provide the information, tools, training, and communication needed to support National teams to develop and implement comprehensive, multi-sectoral, and timely NBSAPs, and to ensure a smooth transition between the development and implementation stages. BPSP supported activities include the development of information services, preparation of technical and advisory materials, training, and enhancing horizontal information exchange and technical co-operation among Parties to the CBD.
