Extractions: April 4, 2002 9:21 a.m. History: Polk County was formed in 1847 from parts of Rutherford and Henderson counties and named in honor of Col. William Polk of American Revolutionary War fame. The county seat, Columbus, was established in 1855. The town of Saluda was incorporated by the General Assembly in 1881, followed by the incorporation of Tryon and Mill Spring in 1885. Polk County, in southwestern North Carolina, encompasses 237.6 square miles and is bordered on the south by the state of South Carolina, to the east and north by Rutherford County, and to the west by Henderson County. The county is known for its mild climate due to the "Thermal Belt,'' in which warm air settles and moderates the year-round temperatures. The town of Tryon is known as a premiere retirement area, drawing transplanted residents who are chiefly writers, artists, educators, professional people and industry executives. The area also is headquarters for many equestrian pursuits, with hundreds of miles of marked riding trails.

Extractions: The Ghanaian Coastline is working closely with Marine Mining Corp. , a Canadian exploration company, who have been developing a 10,000 sq km offshore mining concession in Ghana, Africa , since 1996. Marine believes this concession is the depository of large amounts of placer gold weathered from the mineral rich structures of Ghana, one of the world's most significant gold producers. Work to date has indicated that powerful marine currents and a favorable submarine topography have combined in concentrating not only gold, but other valuable minerals and also aggregates in the shallow waters of this continental shelf. J. C. Duff is providing funding, expertise and hands-on assistance with the aim of establishing Ghana's first coastal marine sand and gravel operation. An emphasis on environmental stewardship, community based development and the use of new technology should help bring this exciting project to success. Due to the enormous scope of this project, J. The Living Standards Measurement Study was established by the World Bank in 1980 to explore ways of improving the type and quality of household data collected by government statistical offices in developing countries. The objectives of the LSMS were to develop new methods for monitoring progress in raising levels of living, to identify the consequences for households of current and proposed government policies, and to improve communications between survey statisticians, analysts, and policymakers. As of 1997, surveys with several, if not all, of the hallmarks of the Living Standards Measurement Study had been conducted in about two dozen countries. Although the first few LSMS surveys followed a very similar format, as time passed and countries with different circumstances were added, substantial variety arose in the surveys across the different countries. This section presents a brief history of the LSMS. In doing so, some explanations for the different outcomes in the different countries are given. The first two LSMS surveys were fielded in Côte d'Ivoire in 1985 and in Peru in 1985-86. In both cases financing was obtained from the World Bank's Research Committee and the main actor in implementing these surveys was the Living Standards Unit (now DECRG). The purpose of these surveys was to gather data that would allow the detailed study of household behavior and several aspects of living standards and to see whether such a complex survey design could in fact be successfully carried out in a developing country. On the whole, the Côte d'Ivoire and Peru surveys were successfully implemented. The data were gathered according to plan and were used immediately (and still are being used) for a wide variety of research projects and, less quickly and to a lesser extent, in support of the policy dialogue between the countries and the World Bank.

Most of the documents were collected in 1991-92. Reasons for Consideration (Importance of material, history of collection, physical condition, etc.) At present, the documents are not being preserved. They remain in the office of an individual (at NCCE) who recognizes their importance, and who seeks archiving assistance. Some of the papers are disintegrating while Some have disappeared. Archiving these documents at this time is important for the preservation of history which speaks to state and society transitions at this juncture in history. This is not only important for Ghana, but also for other African countries and other communities in transition as well. The NCCE has given its approval for the documents to be preserved.
