5-0 out of 5 stars Seminal papers that form the underpinnings of biology today!
When I began reading the Power of Bacterial Genetics, I understood the central dogma of biology, but I had NO idea how it was elucidated.The genius that was required to understand that DNA codes for protein, or thatone codon is a triplet, or that genes can occur as operons, or thatregulation of expression can occur by numerous mechanisms, etc. can NEVERfully be captured by reading a text that presents a synopsis of thedevelopment of these ideas.It is with great insight, the editors of thisbook have chosen seminal papers for us to better observe the evolution ofour grasp of biology.Mutations, suppressors, epistatis, recombination,complementation, crosses, phages, reporters, gene fusions.These phenomenaare extensively characterized and used to elucidate the the mostfundamental ideas upon which all of biology is based.I must admit,as a new student to bacterial genetics, I had some difficulty understandingthe experiments and concepts.I would strongly advise anyone who wants toread these papers to do some background reading first.I have had theluxury of some hand-holding by Professor Silhavy to make it through thebeginning. Finally, I strongly recommend this book to anyone who isentering ANY field in biology.It will take months to finish, but Ipromise that it will be worth every minute!! ... Read more

Product Description
With the advent of genetic engineering and mapping of the human genome, public awareness concerning the contributions that genetic disorders make to illness or death has increased significantly. The fields of human and medical genetics have continued to expand and offer new ways of understanding, preventing, and managing patients with genetic disorders. At the core of the genetic approach are the ideas of anticipation and prevention, which are essential for modern medical practice.

Clinical Genetics: A Short Course explains the importance of being able to anticipate disease based on individual characteristics or a family history, and then providing the necessary measures to forestall further complications. Each informative chapter commences with a case presentation and an explanation of medical terms. As the book progresses and new concepts are introduced, each case is updated. Clinical Genetics clarifies that, although individual genetic disease may be rare, it is an inescapable part of medicine.

Text contains:
* Both basic principles and differential diagnosis and management
* Case-oriented problems, including answers and solutions
* Over 300 illustrations to clarify clinical cases
* Actual patient material
* Glossary of genetic and medical terminology

Clinical Genetics: A Short Course emphasizes clinical, rather than traditional human genetics, and is a vital resource for medical, clinical, and human geneticists, as well as other health care professionals. ... Read more

The book is the syllabus for a course in molecular gentics given by the author at the University of California at Los Angeles, USA, for several years. It adopts a case-study approach, based on analysis of classic and recent papers and discussion of the lives of the principal investigators concerned. The book contains introductory essays which review the key concept in each course unit, over 180 questions and answers which test factual knowledge derived from each unit, and over 140 problems, including scenarios from history, mythology, films and television, which test students' abilities to apply molecular genetic concepts. Solutions and strategies for working out these problems are provided in the companion book, "Solutions Manual and Workbook". ... Read more

Product Description
The fruit fly drosophila melanogaster serves as the classic model for the demonstration of the basic phenomena of genetics. With its easily recognizable genetic markers it is also ideally suited as a test organism for screening newly developed substances for toxicity and mutagenicity. The practical course manual on drosophila includes all experiments on formal genetics which can be carried out without expensive equipment. The experiments are described in enough details that teachers and students with little previous experience in drosophila techniques can complete them successfully. A results and answers section helps students to control their experiments and guides them through scientific reasoning. Routine laboratory procedures can be established following this manual and it serves as a prerequisite to perform more sophisticated experiments including techniques of molecular genetics. ...
