Product Description
In Conduct Unbecoming, Lieutenant Colonel Robert Patterson -New York Times bestselling author and former senior military aide to President Clinton- exposes how President Barack Obama's national security policies are weakening our military and endangering America's safety. From underfunding and misusing the military to his ''Apology Tour'' across Europe and the Middle East, President Obama has made America more vulnerable with both our allies and our enemies. In Conduct Unbecoming, you'll discover how Obama is not listening to his generals' recommendations on Afghanistan, how Obama's first two acts as commander-in-chief weakened our national security and military, and how Obama's feckless diplomatic efforts with other countries are severely threatening our national security.

Shocking and controversial, Conduct Unbecoming reveals how President Obama's disregard for the military and a strong foreign policy is exposing us to unprecedented risks in the twenty-first century. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Another Piece of Vitrolic Garbage by a Right Wing Fool
Buzz Patterson has proven that if you can graduate Junior High School, you can write for Regnery Publishing. Patterson claims to be a defense policy expert, however, his analysis is as penetrating as that of a child."Conduct Unbecoming" merely cobbles together snippets from right wing sources, and uses them as evidence that Obama is unworthy of being Commander in Chief. To anyone that wants to buys this book, a word of caution: a third of this book is a cut and paste job from Obama's National Security Strategy;another third is a "Wikipedia like" chronicle of terrorist attacks that look like the homework assignment of a ninth grader.

Worst of all, Patterson is casting himself as "the conservative military voice in American Politics"...Not sure where he gets off representing our troops, but the fact that he would do so in order to sell books is abhorrent.Mr.Patterson, you can criticize whoever you want, but you look like a freaking idiot if you claim you "speak for those in uniform".Do not use their name for personal profit.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Nation In Danger...AGAIN!
This is the fourth book I've read from Robert Patterson. He writes in an easy manner and documents so well, I know I can trust the information. As someone who served in a former administration and in the military, his focus is on the disrepect to our nation and it's first line of defense...our military. In this very dangerous world, not recognizing an administration's dangerous agenda to gut the military financially and force engagement policies that handicap the soldiers on the front lines is treasonous. The president's complete disdain for our troops will once again show weakness to the enemy, and as it happened before, it will result in an attack on the homeland. The enemy is watching....Robert Patterson spells it out in details that one cannot ignore. You won't read this information in your newspaper. The administration must be understood for it's true policies about homeland security. Then WE THE PEOPLE must change those policies. This book will inform the American citizens, and I recommend it highly. Check out the author's other work as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly conduct unbecoming
If you love a strong America, you must read this book!
Very eye opening, helps you understand why and how the US is loosing face internationally.
Quite surprising that CA senate candidate Barbara Boxer supported a left wing group that was providing aid to our enemies in Iraq.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Read first chapter FREE" then decide: buy or not!
I took a challenge, and chose the option for the Kindle Edition, to "Read first chapter FREE." I did that and then bought the book--I just wanted to read more, as you should. There is plenty there to ponder (you can read the Introduction too). I am amazed at the facts presented! The facts this man, Robert "Buzz" Patterson, Lt. Col. USAF (Ret.), a White House insider, unashamedly lays out against the president, and former administrations, speak for themselves.

Many people have only come to know Obama gradually. "Buzz" shows that this did not have to be so. Unknowingly, a majority of our country has elected a President who is simply en-route to what he promised, and what his past, with his mentors, friendships, and radical associations, might just have pre-determined he would do.

I also agree with others that Chapter 1, "Mr. Alinsky Goes to Washington" is worth the price of the book itself. I must say that I walked away both dumfounded and frightened! What have we done? Where are we going? Why has it taken so long for this to appear in print?

Read on! As we get close to the 2010 election, more and more is said about unseating the Democrats in Congress. Maybe I'm naïve, but "Buzz" dropped a bomb that took me completely by surprise. It seems the Democratic Party has only been a vehicle for what is called the "Shadow Party!" This is the creation of none other than rich man George Soros. "Buzz" offers us the tidbit that the website [...]defines this "party" as being "devised by journalists to describe '527' political committees promoting Democratic Party agendas ... more specifically ... the network of non-profit activist groups organized by George Soros and others to mobilize resources--money, get-out-the-vote drives, campaign advertising, and policy initiatives--to elect Democratic candidates and guide the Democratic Party towards the left. The Internet fundraising operation MoveOn.org is a key component."

Since the $26 million campaign of George Soros failed to oust Bush in 2004, he determined that he could help choose and elect the next Democratic president. "Buzz" labels Soros as the "Shadow Party's spiritual leader," as well as, its principle funder and draftsman. This, he claims, was the medium that brought Barak Obama from state senator to US senator, and finally POTUS. He cites the dates and the places where he was catapulted into the presidential race. Come to your own conclusions, but it seems to me that George Soros is calling the shots and Barack Obama is his "water boy." The tentacles of this man and this "party" appear as a network of "more than five-dozen unions, non-profit activist groups, and think tanks whose agendas are ideologically to the left..." that reaches nationwide. This is a bigger "machine" than most of us would have ever imagined as existing.

It does not stop there. Read about the Center for American Progress (CAP), established only three blocks from the White House--as the keystone organization of the "Shadow Party" during the Clinton administration. Check out the radicals that emerged from the "Shadow Party" and where they are. Why would an experienced military officer like "Buzz" deem our Commander-in-Chief "unqualified to command a squadron of even a few hundred airmen" never mind 2+ million men and women?

This is certainly an education even if one chooses to disagree with the author--this was not an effort orchestrated overnight! There is too much in place. This is all the result of much planning and investing.

I would recommend both of these as a "should read" before our upcoming election.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
When I cracked this book open I was prepared for what I read only because I knew before Obama was elected what we could expect. Obama never lied about what he wanted to do. Many misinterpreted his words. Now we see he really meant everything he said. Is a man a product of the friends he surrounds himself with? Look at Obama's relationship with Rev. Wright, Father Pfleger, Bill Ayers and Bernadine Dohrn. Look at how he was raised and who raised him. This is a man who has no one clue about what the United States is all about, nor does he have the slightest connection to the "common" man.
His disregard of the Military, his hogtieing of our intelligence community and his allowing a hard leftist race baiter such as Eric Holder to become the nation's top lawyer proves that Obama not only does not care about the United States, our security, he also has some strange need to force a collective guilt trip down our throats for slights that most likely were formed in the imaginations of his parents, and his mentors. One of those mentors should cause all of us to pause. His name was Frank Marshall Davis, a poet, and member of the Communist Party USA which was a Soviet backed party. He also was on the FBI's list of subverives for decades. Just that relationship alone would make Obama ineligable for any access to security clearances. Add his friendship with Bill Ayers and we have another real question that Obama will never answer truthfully. Barack Obama is not only cooly interpreted correctly by Col. Patterson, the President is also put into context. The author asks how did people get so fooled by Obama? That is a question that after reading this book we should all ask ourselves. Especially those who voted for him. ... Read more

Why in recent years have the social and economic upheavals in Kuwait and Qatar been accompanied by a remarkable political continuity? In a region of revolution and coups, these particular monarchies have somehow survived. In her analysis of political change in the Gulf, Jill Crystal investigates this apparent anomaly by examining the impact of oil on the formation and destruction of political coalitions and state institutions. She also adds to our understanding of state formation by highlighting the ways in which states and rulers structure the relationship between those with money and those with power. This updated edition includes a discussion of the Gulf War and its aftermath. ... Product Description
What makes a president great?
Here is the ideal source for students, scholars, and the general public as we approach the 2000 presidential election. The American Presidents is a collection of articles that analyze and evaluate the presidential careers of the men who have occupied the office since its inception in 1789.In this volume, the leading presidential historians in the United States offer insights into what makes a president great, mediocre, or--in the case of most of them--something in between.

The contributors to The American Presidents were not asked to write straightforward biographies of the presidents; other sources are available for that.Rather, they were asked to evaluate their subjects. No strict patterns were imposed by the editor; each author approached his or her subject in the way thatbest illustrated the strengths and weaknesses of the president under consideration.

Forty-one have held the office of president and all, in one way or another, were exceptional men. Some, like Andrew Jackson and Harry Truman, are usually thought of as representing the "common folk," but nothing was common about either of them. Each proved to be an extraordinary and singular politician able to rally and represent the country through the challenges of their times.
Some presidents had achieved brilliance in other fields (Ulysses Grant in the military and Herbert Hoover as an engineer and humanitarian, for example) but had presidencies that are considered unsuccessful. What accounts for this seeming paradox, in which insight, sensitivity, and competence suddenly become "nontransferable" when the man reaches the White House? This book offers the reader multiple perspectives on this and other issues.

Examination of the ways in which challenges affect presidential greatness
Theodore Roosevelt, a successful president by any standard, was acutely aware that the prosperity and peace the country enjoyed during his two terms in office would, ironically, prevent him from reaching the upper tier of greatness enjoyed by Washington and Lincoln. Afte he left office, he yearned to return in hope of finding the challenge that would seal his greatness. Earlier, in the late nineteenth century, the electorate placed competent men such as Rutherford B. Hayes, Grover Cleveland, and Benjamin Harrison in the White House, but they are little remembered today. None faced earth-shaking challanges at home and abroad, and their presidencies slipped into obscurity.

Discussion of personal characteristics and presidential performance
For more than two centuries the presidency has proved a remarkably durable institution. Presidential personalities have varied widely from the patrician aloofness of Washington to the moody introspection of Lincoln to the noisy exuberance of Theodore Roosevelt. The articles inThe American Presidents consider the ways in which personality has affected performance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Carefully researched and informative
This volume is put together the way a good biography should be.While the analysis is not profound, the reader gets a good idea of how Underwood attained the positions he did. While it is a little startling that as late as 1907 he would still call for the repeal of the 15th Amendment, contemporary Southern politicians were taking even more extreme anti-Negro positions; e.g., James K. Vardaman, in Mississippi, was crusading for no money for schools for Negroes, and Pitchfork Ben Tillman was condoning lynching! The account of the early days that Underwood was in Congress is a bit dry, detailing as it does legislative events of little significance today. The account of the 1912 Baltimore Democratic Convention, where Underwood was a candidate for President, is full of interest. This is also true of the account of his bid for President in 1924, when he became a household name because of the 103 ballots taken at the 1924 Democratic Convention in New York which started with the booming cry:"Alabama casts 24 votes for Oscar W. Underwood."Underwood is almost unique (only Henry Clay's career is comparable) in American history in that he attained a leadership position in the United States House of Representatives (in which he served for almost 20 years) and then was elected to the Senate where he again became Democratic leader, albeit his two-term Senate career was not as successful as his House career. The account of his two campaigns for the Senate, in 1914 and in 1920, are full of interest.Anyone interested in the political history of the first quarter of the 20th century in the United States will find reading of this book of value.I know I found it easy to read and consistently attention-holding.The research is carefully done and the footnotes are appropriately detailed. The bibliography is adequate. It is always good to see a biographer who has used the Congressional Record in the way that it should be in order to relate a congressional career. This is a good book, and throws light on a fascinating period of American political history. ... Product Description
General Series Editor: James C. Bradford
Little has been published about the life of Baltimore's Commodore Joshua Barney, a man who earned a commission in the nascent Continental Navy, sailed as a privateer, and served as a commodore in both the French and American navies. Louis Norton's biography scrutinizes Barney's colorful life and critically analyzes events that forged his character. Although largely forgotten, he was one of the most clever, competent officers of the American sailing navy. Based on primary and secondary sources, this biography contains many of Barney's quotes and some charming contemporaneous verse written about him that describes the changing fortunes of his life.

A natural seaman and leader with extraordinary courage, Barney took part in thirty-five Revolutionary War naval engagements and was imprisoned three times, but escaped twice using resourceful disguises. In his later years Barney became a national hero defending the Chesapeake during the War of 1812. Author Norton elaborates on Barney's remarkable history with the American flag: he was among the first to use it for naval recruitment, sailed under the banner on the first American vessel to receive a cannon salute from a foreign nation, and carried the stars and stripes into the French National Assembly as the new republic received American diplomatic recognition. Finally the commodore served on the committee that ordered the Fort McHenry flag which became the "Star Spangled Banner." With this fascinating biography, Norton has polished Joshua Barney's image to the brighter luster that many historians believe it deserves. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Who burned Washington
According to the author, the Chasseurs Britannique regiment was present and participated in the burning of Washington in 1814. According to the author the regiment then moved on to attack Baltimore. Unfortunately the book is not foot noted as to the source information.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Proud Marylander Joshua Barney
I was born in Maryland and spent a good part of my life in and around Baltimore. Unitl I read this biography I was not aware of Joshua Barney. He makes me proud to be a Marylander. The book is very well written, fast moving and gives a overview of maritime warfare plus the history of the time in which the commodore lived. I would especially recommend the book to anyone from the tidewaterarea who is interested what happened, particularly at sea, during of the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812 and times in between.

5-0 out of 5 stars A lost navl hero comes alive
This is a thoughtful, intelligent, yet unsentimental biographyof one of the most fascinating American naval officers of the Revolutionary War as well as the War of 1812. The author's depiction of Barney is one of maritime adventure and he couples it with the the contemporary history of of the time. Barney's incredible bravery and resourcefulness are balanced by problems of ego and vulnerability. I found the book engrossing and excellent reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Joshua Barney: Hero of the Revoltion and 1812
This is a well written and organized book about one of the most fascinating naval officers to serve America during the crucial years of the formation of our nation. His biography involves crossing the paths of many of the great figures of the Revolution, including Washington, Franklin, Morris, Adams, Napoleon, Madison, Monroe, and John Paul Jones among others. Norton has brought the long neglected history of the Continental Navy to life in this work. The adventures of Barney as a yong seaman, lieutenant, privateer and ultimately captain and commodore from captive of the British to clever businessman make for fascinating reading. It is a story that is so exciting, it is difficult to put down.I highly recommend it those who are interested in naval history, Revolutionary War history and those who simply like a good adventure story. It is remarkable that is a work of non-fiction. It reads as well as the best of the Hornblower novels. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars For collectivists only...
Failing to apply the lessons gathered over 2500 years of Western political philosophy and the 150 years of this nation's history prior to the Roosevelt regime, this book takes an incredibly biased view of the many deceitful actions taken by Roosevelt and his statist cronies during their underhanded and, unfortunately, successful efforts to initiate the transition of this nation from the minimal central government envisioned by our Founding Fathers to the current era of total government. This book is one for those who believe that the 50% of their income that is currently taken from them via direct and hidden taxes is simply "their fair share" of the financial burden caused by a bloated, inefficient, and incredibly intrusive but, to them, infinitely desirable central government. ... Product Description

This book is a critical examination of the military and the police and their role in shaping the South African state during the 20th century, and especially during the past thirty years.

Looking at the "security establishment" - the South African Defence Force (SADF), South African Police (SAP), the Department of Defence (DOD), the intelligence services (NIS), the State Security Council (SSC) and the arms industry (ARMSCOR), the nature of the South African state is examined including the importance of the military and the question of the state's position - police state, military dictatorship or a state with an important but essentially limited role for the military. The case is made for an even-handed moral approach in the state's military activity.

This book provides histories of the military and police in the 19th and 20th centuries including first-hand accounts from retired officers and state employees.

It contains much original thinking and analysis and shows how the South African state is now in crisis, trying to maintain minority rule or at least white influence, despite the inevitable end of the white minority state.
