Product Description
Chronic graft versus host disease (GVHD) is the most common complication of allogenic bone marrow transplantation. Because of the protracted clinical course of chronic GVHD, transplant centers and hematology/oncology offices are inadequately equipped to manage these immuno-incompetent patients with a multi-system disorder. Practitioners need to be able to recognize and effectively manage chronic GVHD as a late effect of more than half of allogenic transplantations. The text is oriented for the clinician, with chapters covering staging, organ site and system-specific manifestations, treatment options, and supportive care. Drs. Georgia B. Vogelsang and Steven Z. Pavletic have been pioneers in the recognition of the multi-organ complexity of this disease and have gathered the input of a variety of subspecialist physicians for this book. This book fills the gap in practical literature on chronic GVHD, providing a comprehensive, up-to-date, and clinically relevant resource for anyone who deals with cancer patients post-transplant. ... This book provides a historical perspective of graft-vs-host disease as well as the discussion of the mechanisms involved in graft-vs-host disease. Understanding the mechanisms of graft-vs-host disease will allow for the development of better preventative and therapeutic measures. This field continues to be an area of active research as we understand better and better how T-cells become activated and the important factors associated with activated T-cells such as specific cytokines released or specific cytokines which may effect T-cell functions. These particular aspects are covered in this book as well as a discussion on the potential therapies and prophylactic regimens associated with graft-vs-host disease. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Adequate intro for us non-specialists
As an ID doc who seems BMT, I was looking for a "BMT for Dummies" book to make sure my fundamentals were sound, and to have as a resource for the ID fellows. This fit the bill reasonably well, with definitions for a lot of basic concepts and procedures. It gives the basics of most aspects, from indications, the mechanics of matching and transplanting, complications, and infections.
I've given several chapters to the fellows, who liked them and felt that it filled in important gaps in basic knowledge.I haven't gotten feedback whether the onc fellows like it.
This small book does not pretend to have the true depth needed for a real practicioner.
The target audiences I picture might be the following:
- Consultants who need to understand the process better
- Heme/onc fellows beginning their rotations
- Nurses, NPs, PAs who are just beginning to work with HSCT patients and need a place to start.
The 4/5 rating comes from a general sense of adequacy, but I can't find many specific complaints. It needs updating in cord blood transplants. The ID chapters seem a bit short, but I'm biased.
I felt this was a good supplement to Dowden et al. "Transplant Infections" to round out the BMT ID experience.

Product Description
Subject of the book is the detailed description of the clinical and diagnostic pathology of one of the strangest diseases of man, the so-called Graft-versus-Host-Disease (GvHD). This disease is caused by the reaction of certain donor cells (T-lymphocytes) with tissue of the recipient, i.e. after allogeneic bone marrow transplantation, a life-saving measure in patients with leukemia, aplastic anemia etc. In this context a GvHD may develop with severe disease symptoms in skin, gastrointestinal tract, liver, and other organs. If the complication is recognized in time an effective treatment of the potentially lethal GvHD is possible. However, this requires a rapid and reliable recognition of GvHD lesions. The book is based on the histopathological study of more than 1000 biopsies and 50 autopsies performed by the author as the reference pathologist of the center for bone marrow transplantation of the University of Ulm. ...
