Extractions: Benjamin Harrison, 1833-1901 America's 23rd president Benjamin Harrison, grandson of president William Henry Harrison, served between the 2 terms of Grover Cleveland. Harrison had the distinctions of being the only grandson of a US president to become Chief Executive, the last Civil War general to serve as president, and was the shortest of America's presidents. Infamous in his day for his "billion dollar congress" Harrison died in 1901 at the age of 67. Born on August 20th, 1833 in North Bend, Ohio Benjamin Harrison was the son of farmer turned statesman John Scott Harrison, a US Senator, and his wife, Elizabeth Neal. Harrison's grandfather was William Henry Harrison, the famed frontiersman whose own presidential campaign motto had been "Tippecanoe and Tyler, Too!" for his famed Tippecanoe exploits. Benjamin lived on his father's Ohio farm and was a quiet and studious youth, who was accepted at the Miami University at Oxford, Ohio. While a student Harrison met the daughter of Dr. John Scott, the founder of the nearby Oxford Female Institute. Caroline Lavinia Scott, a fragile, outgoing female scholar charmed Harrison, and he proposed marriage soon after meeting the petite Ohioan (Harrison was himself barely 5'6" tall). The couple wed shortly after Harrison graduated college with honors, and by the time he completed 2 years of law and passed the Ohio bar had a son and daughter. Harrison moved his family to Indianapolis

Extractions: Benjamin Harrison, (1833-1901), 23d PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES . Inaugurated 100 years after George WASHINGTON , Benjamin Harrison was known as the "Centennial President." He inherited a distinguished name. His grandfather, William Henry HARRISON , was the 9th president of the United States. In colonial Virginia five successive generations of Benjamin Harrisons (1632-1791) compiled almost identical records as gentlemen of education and wealth, burgesses, councillors, and militia colonels. Fearless independence, a strong sense of justice, and high intelligence marked Harrison as a soldier, lawyer, humanitarian, and statesman-president. Ranked today as an average chief executive, in his own era he compiled a strong record of constitutional government that enabled the country to approach world power with prudence and caution. Compared with strong, appealing leaders like JACKSON LINCOLN , and ROOSEVELT , Harrison was greater as a man than as a president.. Early Life and Education President Benjamin Harrison's father was John Scott Harrison (1809-1878), the only American to be the son of one president and the father of another. After college, John Scott Harrison managed a 2,000-acre (800-meter) family estate at North Bend, Ohio. In 1831, his first wife having died, he married Elizabeth Irwin, from Pennsylvania. The new bride eventually reared nine children.

Extractions: Benjamin Harrison, the 23d PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES (1889-93), was a vigorous administrator. During his term as chief executive he led the REPUBLICAN PARTY in its pursuit of a domestic policy of economic nationalism and guided the nation in its first tentative steps toward overseas expansion. Yet Harrison's political ineptitude was as great as his executive skill, and he contributed to the electoral repudiation that the Republicans received in 1890 and 1892. Talented and hardworking, Harrison deserved a better fate than his anticlimactic and now largely forgotten presidency. Harrison was born in North Bend, Ohio, on Aug. 20, 1833. He was the son of Elizabeth and John Scott Harrison, who served as a Whig congressman from Ohio (1853-57). His grandfather, William Henry HARRISON , had been the ninth president of the United States. Upon graduation (1852) from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, Harrison read law in Cincinnati. He married Caroline Lavinia Scott in 1853; they had two children. Early Career Moving to Indianapolis in 1854, Harrison joined the newly formed Republican party and was elected city attorney in 1857. In 1860 and again in 1864 he won

In addition to frequently attending church, Harrison became a church elder, and taught Sunday school. Harrison's religious faith instilled in him a sense of duty which underlay his political activities. "I hope you will renew your Christian faith and duties. It is a great comfort to trust God even if His providence is unfavorable. Prayer steadies one when he is walking in slippery places even if things asked for are not given." letter to Russell Harrison, 8 August 1887 Works by Benjamin Harrison
