Extractions: Overview: In this lesson students will learn about the varying attitudes and definitions of land ownership held by Native and European Americans by studying a variety of primary documents from the nineteenth century. They will learn about how various treatiesthe Homestead Act and the Dawes Actaffected both Native and European Americans. Students will discuss these issues in the form of a debate, and will also write journal entries. Overview: In this lesson students will be exposed to the cultural and artistic importance of wampum belts to the Native American tribes that George Catlin encountered on his travels, and the importance of the belts in American history as markers of relations between tribes and the U.S. Government between 1776 and 1878. Students will gain insight into the differing ways in which these cultures expressed ideas, values, and policy through objects, written documents, and oral traditions.

Extractions: About 10,000 year ago, the Neolithic Age began. The Neolithic Age was a time of rapid change. Among the important changes of this age were the development of farming and herding. Farming in Europe, Asia, and other areas of the world developed by a long, slow process. Women did most of the gathering of plant foods and are considered the first plantedusually near a water source. Most of the early villages, like Jarmo located in Iraq, consisted of no more than 150 people. People lived in simple houses with mud walls and reed roofs. The people of Jarmo raised barley and wheat, herded animals, and hunted wild game. One of the larger Neolithic towns was Catal Huyuk in Turkey. The 3,000 residents of Catal Huyuk, developed new skills. One was the ability to work with metal. As a result, they had many luxuries that other Neolithic groups lacked. Rosen, Director of the Adult Literacy Resource Institute, the Greater Boston Regional Support Center of the Massachusetts System for Adult Basic Education Support.
