Extractions: OSU Forestry Home Page Honduras Land and Climate Honduras covers 43,278 square miles compared to Oklahoma at 68,679 square miles. Honduras borders El Salvador, Guatemala, and Belize in the east and then Nicaragua in the west. With the Caribbean Sea in the north and the Pacific Ocean to the south. In the eastern part of the country is covered by sub-tropic forest that can not be access by vehicle because of the lack of roads. All the road are on the West side of the country which contains the only recreational lake, finca las glorias, most of the population, national forest, and tourist sights. While Honduras is mountainous, it is the only Central American country that does not have volcanoes, but is 80% mountains and 20% valleys. Lack of volcanoes is a factor in its low food production. Soil in volcanic regions is usually rich and good for agriculture. Due to the poor soil, many people have practiced migrating agriculture, moving every few years to clear new land and plant crops. This and timber operations have caused Honduras to lose 30% of its forest over the last 25 years. Today, in the year 2000, there is a vase majority of the people who still use wood as a source of heat, energy, and fuel. This is alarming the government to develop Nation Parks and Reserves, and work with their people on other ways to preserve the forest. One way is charcoal, and building smaller wood burning stove. The climate varies according to elevation; subtropical in the low lands and temperate at higher levels. Tegucigalpa, the capital enjoys a relatively mild climate year round. The rainy season extends from May to November, although rain sometimes mat not begins to fall until late October. March through May are the hottest months.

Extractions: Hondurans typify personalismo. The individual is more important than ideology or society, consequently, personal needs or desires take precedence over responsibilities. The exception to this rule is responsibility to family. Family is everything. The father is the head of the home, and this reflects the rest of Honduran society, which is male dominated. Honduras is also typified by a sense of fatalism, which rather than make the people hopeless, allows them to enjoy the good in life, while largely ignoring what is bad. In Latin fashion, Hondurans observe the hora latina, which is a description of the attitude that Hondurans hold toward schedule and punctuality. It is a rule of life to be late for appointments, visits, parties, etc. Hondurans are very polite. When meeting someone for the first time, it is custom to use their formal title. When meeting a smaller group of people, one must greet each person individually, and say good bye to each one as well. Friends will often hug. Men shake hands with other men. Men greet women with a kiss on the cheek. Women greet one another in the same manner. Diet Beans, corn, yucca, and rice are staple foods. Corn is usually eaten in the form of tortillas. Tropical fruits are common, along with potatoes and yams. Coffee is widely consumed, even by young children (decaffeinated coffee is very rare). Breakfast is usually eaten early. Lunch is the main meal, served around noon. Dinner is a light meal, eaten between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. As a rule, the rich eat later than the poor. Both hands should be kept above the table. It is considered rude to leave one hand in the lap. Tortillas may be used as utensils.

The main Indian groups are Miskito, Payas, and Xicaques. 2 percent of the population is black, and 1 percent white (mainly Spanish). The blacks are mainly Garifuna. Extractions: of Honduras A. Education Education in Honduras is free and compulsory for children between the ages of 7 and 12. The government has pledged to raise the literacy rate, which stands at 72.7 percent. In 1994, 1.01 million pupils were enrolled in 8,114 primary schools. However, only 32 percent of secondary school-aged children were enrolled in school. The National Autonomous University of Honduras (1847), in Tegucigalpa, is the major institution of higher learning. In 1994 enrollment in higher education numbered 54,100 students. B. Culture The interaction of both Native American and Spanish strains in Honduran cultural history is clearly visible in the architecture. Many colonial buildings show strong Native American influences combined with baroque, Renaissance, and Moorish styles imported by the Spanish. With the exception of a few isolated Native American settlements where ancient languages and customs have been preserved, Honduras is primarily a Spanish culture today. The marimba is the most popular instrument and forms the core of many bands. Native folklore, folk music, and dances are limited, and artistic activity is concentrated around the School of Fine Arts in Comayagua, the old capital. In northwestern Honduras lies Copán, a ceremonial center of the Old Empire of the Maya and one of the most important archaeological sites in the Western Hemisphere.
