Z The language which has prevailed in Hungary for nearly a thousand years and is spoken at the present day by about 12,000,000 persons, is a pithy and very pliant language, rich in vowel-sounds and fundamentally different from the majority of literary tongues. As was determined by the Jesuit Virginity of Our Lady , c. 1300. Hungarian literature, a markedly national product, was always in closest contact with the historical development of the people, and accordingly may be divided into five periods. The Pre-Reformation Period The pre-Reformation period, which in pre-Christian times, up to about A. D. 1000, produced chiefly popular epics, and after the introduction of Christianity Bibliotheca Corvina ). Culture and literature were suddenly brought to a standstill by the invasion of the Turks and the consequent devastation of bishoprics, monasteries, and schools, and later through the divisions and confusion of the Reformation. Extractions: Timeless Nation 23. LOVE, LIFE AND LIBERTY (Hungarian literature between 1848 and 1910) Sandor Petofl He was born in 1823 in a village of the Great Plain of peasant parents. A talented but restless student, he did no complete his studies. Instead he led a rather bohemian existence for a while. Finally he found his true vocation in writing and settled in Pest, working as the contributor and editor of various publications. On the 15th of March 1848 he became the leader of the bloodless uprising in Pest and his poem, "Arise Magyars!" became the battle hymn of the freedom struggle. At the outbreak of the hostilities he joined the national army and became the aide of general Bern whom he worshipped. He married Julia Szendrey, the inspiration of his love poems. At the end of the freedom war, Petofi died on the battlefield at the age of 26, in 1849. His poem, "At the End of September", His love poelry, inspired by his wife, reveals his sincere, almost puritanical morality: deep sensitivity without needless sentimentality. A true son of the people, he speaks their simple language without affectation. He describes village and peasant life in his

Extractions: Home Encyclopedia Summa Fathers ... K > Kisfaludy A B C D ... Z Born at Suemeg, Hungary, 27 Sept., 1772; died at Suemeg, 28 October, 1844. He went to school at Raab and later studied philosophy and law at Presburg. In 1792 he gave up the study of law, and having joined the army, was appointed to the Hungarian lifeguards in Vienna. During his sojourn there he was especially attracted to the Hungarian writers living in Vienna at that time. In 1793 he was transferred to Italy, and stationed at Milan. After the surrender of that city to Napoleon in 1796, Kisfaludy was sent a prisoner of war to France, and confined in Provence, but was given his freedom the same year, went to Klagenfurt, and from there was transferred to the Wallis regiment and sent to Wuertemberg. He took part in the Rhine campaign in 1799, but sent in his resignation the same year. He married his early love, Rosa Szegedy, in 1800. In 1802 Kisfaludy participated in the insurrection of the Hungarian nobles, as orderly officer to the Palatine, by whose command he later wrote an account of the uprising. He became a member of the Hungarian Academy in 1830, and was chosen an honorary member in 1835. He lost his wife in 1832 but later married again, shortly after which his second wife also died. The last years of his life were spent in his native town. Kisfaludy is particularly prominent as a lyric poet. His love-songs, which appeared under the name of "Liebeslieder Himfy's," the first part in 1801, the second in 1807, assured him an immense popularity among his associates. The songs revealed the influence of Rosa Szegedy's love, both before and after their marriage. The metrical rendering of his verses is that of the sonnet; they undeniably show the influence of his stay in Provence, and the impress of

Extractions: PREFACE During the fall of 1955, I began an investigation of the origins of romanticism in Hungarian literature from about 1770 to about 1845. A dramatic development of a truly national literature in Hungary began in this period, and romanticism contributed to its inception and growth in very important ways. As I sought to collect materials for my study, I quickly encountered serious problems, the first of which was bibliographical. Despite the fact that Pintér's eight-volume history (no. 382, below) contained an extensive bibliographical apparatus, I needed other bibliographical aids, especially to uncover materials published since his history. From Pintér's work I compiled lists of titles and checked them against the National Union Catalog, the first of many attempts to locate useful titles. After I learned which libraries were interested in Hungarian materials, by analyzing the returns from the National Union Catalog and by examining the terms of the Farmington Plan and reports of Hungarian periodical holdings in the Union list of serials
