It fell under communist rule following World War II. A revolt in 1956 and an announced withdrawal from the Warsaw Pact was met with massive military intervention by Moscow. In the more open GORBACHEV years, Hungary led the movement to dissolve the Warsaw Pact and steadily shifted toward multiparty democracy and a market-oriented economy. Following the collapse of the USSR in 1991, Hungary developed close political and economic ties to Western Europe. It joined NATO in 1999 and is a frontrunner in a future expansion of the EU. It's a stupid hour in the middle of the night, but I just couldn't sleep because of my exponentially increasing anger over the no doubt almost non-existent UK media coverage of the massacre of civilians in the Democratic Republic of Congo. (See post below which I can't link to because the archives are up the spout.) Which led me, naturally, to one of my favourite irritants, the blind, stupid, ignorant and crass imbalance in reporting of the African continent in the domestic UK media. So. Name one country in Africa that you've heard quite a lot about. Other than South Africa. I'm willing to bet quite a fat wad of money that it'd be Zimbabwe. Oh yes, that's where that evil, evil little maniacal megalomaniac with his ridiculous Hitler mustache hangs out isn't it? He's a corrupt bastard who's starving his people, killing off opposition supporters and, oh, taking away those productive commercial farms and giving them to his mates. We hear about him a lot. But let's look at just a few examples.

This course, the first of a series of courses to be offered each fall, will focus on the Middle East conflict between the Israeli and Palestinian peoples. It will explore the history of the conflict (whose history?), the players (both populations and political structures), the issues, and the solutions. The sessions will begin with a review of material provided followed by a discussion of that material. Dave Davidson has an MS degree from Fordham U., a BA degree from Marymount College, and MBA and BBA degrees from CUNY. Extractions: The germination of our interest in the area of education comes from the abysmal statistics in educational outcomes for Latino students across the nation. In 1994, 34.7% of Latino students dropped out of high school, in comparison to 15.5% of blacks and just 12% of whites. How can such a troubling trend of epidemic proportions among Latino students be explained? Scholars like Jonathan Kozol attribute this trend to the disparity of resources and quality of education available in minority-majority school districts in low-income areas, in comparison to suburban, middle class communities. In Savage Inequalities , Kozol conducts a nation-wide comparison of the disparity in school spending per pupil and quality of education available in neighboring communities at extremely distant socioeconomic strata, such as Camden and Cherry Hill, New Jersey. Kozol comments that "to a real degree, what is considered 'adequate' or 'necessary' or 'sufficient' for the poor... is determined by the rich or relatively rich... in accord with their opinion of what children of the poor are fit to become, and what their social role should be"(216). Using information like the graph below, Kozol links students' educational attainment with the socioeconomic class of their families; however, Kozol points out that schools in minority-majority communities are at the bottom of the education and socioeconomic scale because the communities are aggregations of families under poverty.

Extractions: Prague, 15-16 April 2002 The starting premise of this analysis is that the Western policy of civil society empowerment has at the same time differed and coincided with the general policy of conflict management (or better, mismanagement) in the region. Western political interventions and civil society aid programmes confronted and/or supported each other but there has not been any consistent strategy of orchestrated approach. Understandably, the results at the end of the day appear to be minor and inadequate. 1. Civil Society Between Myths and Reality "Compatibility of pacifism and militarism was achieved that moment when the idea of nation-state was promoted and won at the election. Through the establishment of the nexus nation-state, which indivisible elements are the concepts of "one's own military" and "national security", there was introduced a distinction between "our" and "their" military, between the good (Slovenes) and bad (the others) boys, between justified and unjustified militarisation, and at last instance - all these led toward revolutionary (Leninist) logic of differentiation between "just" and "unjust" wars ..."

We may wonder what, if anything, they have learned from their work. In my years of teaching writing to intermediate and advanced learners of English as a second or foreign language, I have found that the use of a correction code to guide students in correcting their own errors makes writing more of a learning activity. Using the correction code does not make marking papers more efficient, but it does provide students with an opportunity to learn from their mistakes and to gain confidence in their ability to write. The same approach works for instruments, but there are differences. You can't Prepare low "la," for example, by using it in different songs until you have actually taught the fingering for that note, but there are other activities that accomplish the same thing. You can have the class sing low "la," and then find the note on their recorders. The teacher can play a tune with the new note, and ask them to figure out what you are doing. (My students love that!)

Thessaloniki, May 24-27, 2000 Introduction By the end of the eighties and the beginning of the nineties deep economic and political crises broke out in most Central East European countries. The process stemmed from a general crisis of the planned economy , which manifested itself in equilibrium, growth, structural, institutional, and modernisation crisis. These crises led to the change of social and economic systems, but with different speeds and depth in each country. The transition countries of South Eastern Europe are facing now the historic chance of integrating themselves into the more developed part of Europe. This program is very similar to the situation in Central Eastern Europe ten years ago. Many years have to pass before a reliable assessment can be provided on the position achieved by the region in the world economy as well the success of different policies pursued by each country . However, after ten years it is time for us to make a balance.

Extractions: GLOBAL VISON - LOCAL ACTION European convention of the World Council of Reformed Churches at Nagyvárad Global vision - Local action was the motto of the European convention of the World Council of Reformed Churches. The meeting was held between 18-23 August, 2002. László Tõkés, bishop of the Királyhágó-mellék (Transsylvania, Rumania) Church District invited the delegates of the European Reformed Churches to the town on the banks of the river Körös. A resolution was made that the number of the governing council would be reduced to 12. The member Churches, numbering around 40, elected the Swiss Gottfried Locker as president, Marek Izdebski, Eszter Karsai from Budapest as vice presidents and Ian Alexander as secretary. Dr Sándor Fazakas, professor of the Debrecen Theological University was elected to be the member of the theological committee. An interview with him follows. What were the main areas of discussion and some of the decisions of the meeting? The participants tried to express the message of the Church towards the world, society and other denominations in three main areas: 1. confronting the past. 2. situation of minorities, 3. economic justice and globalisation. Confronting the past This issue has its actuality in almost every country of Europe. Often stepping forward and renewal are bogged down by sins, failures and unresolved issues from the past in relation to Church-life as well as the society on the whole. Often the victims and the responsible are still occupying their formal positions. This set-up makes living together, reconciliation and moving forward very difficult. What can be the solution in such a situation? Forgiveness loses its value and reconciliation can never happen without acknowledgement of ones sins. The opinion of the delegates was that the Church itself should become the medium of reconciliation. One could accept responsibility and ask for forgiveness without fear. This way the Church could be the model for the society.

Enthusiastic faculty from the Five Colleges displayed their projects and spoke about how their use of technology enhances students learning experiences. In the short talks and at poster sessions, groups gathered to hear "compassionate pioneers" describe and answer questions about uses of technology, pedagogy, and the developmental process. Projects at all levels of technical complexity were represented. Participants representing many disciplines demonstrated Web pages designed to accompany specific courses or research topics, multimedia presentations created with various software packages, tutorial programs, interactive tools, software for research and analysis of data, and much more. From the excitement generated, some of these experimental applications are likely to spawn new designs and uses of technology.
